Encountering a MIGRANT RAFT between the Canary Islands and Africa [SOLO SAILING]

  • This is not the start that Ryan expected to have when he left Lanzarote to cross the Atlantic solo onboard Polar Seal. And while we've always been aware of the migrant crisis between Africa and Europe, we never imagined that we would be confronted to it in such a brutal way.
It has been two months since the events, and Ryan is still very impacted by that night of January 2022, when he was called by the Coast Guards to go confirm the sighting of a migrant raft 100 nautical miles south of Gran Canaria.
We understand that the migrant crisis is a divisive topic, and we can not cover all of its aspects. We understand that you may have opinions, but please be respectful of each other in the comment section.

This was a hard video for us to create, partly because Ryan still cannot talk about the events without crying, but also because it is a complex, divisive and multifaceted topic whose entirety we could not cover. If this story left you with a desire to contribute, we are selling T-shirt whose profits will be given to the United Nations Refugee Agency (www.unhcr.org/) which helps refugees in the Canary Islands and everywhere around the World. Speaking from experience, you did well in an extremely difficult and dangerous situation. You responded to a maritime distress call, you put your own plans on hold and proceeded directly to the area of distress. You provided proof of life to the rescue authorities so they do not waste rescue assets on a false alarm especially if they are dealing with multiple situations. You remained calm and collected and did not try to get those people onto your own boat which would have been dangerous and difficult and would have probably led to loss of life possibly even your own. Many times capsizes have occurred on these migrant vessels when people onboard get to excited that they are being rescued and move the delicate balance of weight in these small boats. You absolutely did the correct thing, stay distant, provide proof of life and distress and allow the competent rescue authorities deal with it. In a very difficult situation you demonstrated calm, considered decision making and saved lives because of that. Well done Captain.

Mate you did an incredible job in a really challenging situation and an amazing job telling the story that followed! Proud of you for having the courage to let us see the real emotion of the situation. In these crazy times we live in its easy for important issues to get lost in the noise. Seeing a friend so close to it all and so deeply moved by it really hammered it home for me as I'm sure it will others too. My T-Shirt is purchased and i shall wear it with pride!

Hey Ryan, if you had not been out there for fun and prepared as you were ( with Sophie ready and reachable) those people could have died, so don’t feel bad about having fun, you actually saved 59 lives, few people in the world can say that. You are a very impressive person, both in the way you prepare the boat and yourself ( not just for this trip) and in how humane you are ( and yes, Sophie, this is valid for you too). Keep on having fun and … save a few people along when you have the chance :-). Hostage negotiators don’t count how many people they loose, they count how many they save, otherwise guilt would prevent them from saving the next ones. The bad person is not the one that is out there while other struggle, the bad people are the ones that create the situation that put those people out there

Your on point except about bad people. I would say if someone witnessed a car accident and didn’t call services they are bad. If you aren’t actively helping the world, you silently support the destroyers and oppressors, which is still bad. Everything is so interconnected you can’t remain neutral.
Ryan; you are an amazing human! May this humbling experience renew your lust for life!

@@It-b-Blair I agree, neutral doesn’t exist in our interconnected world anymore. Doing nothing is taking a side. Ryan was saying he felt bad being out there for fun while other are out there struggling for life, I just wanted to underline how him being out there saved lives, he should be proud, not feel, guilty. All we need is more Ryans 😘

I won't say don't beat yourself up because you don't need to hear that. I won't tell you you're a hearo because you don't want to hear that either. I work in the world of emergency trauma so I know a thing or two about how you might have been and are feeling now. What I can tell you is that you did about as well as any human could do in that situation. We train for stress and traumatic events and it still fucks with us. You were thrust into that rescue from zero to 100 in minutes and it did not resolve itself for hours after it started so you had to cope with it and you did.
Not once did you panic. Not once did you lose sight of your objective. You stayed you did what needed to be done and that sir is pretty bad ass. With time you'll process the experience and it will normalize for you to retell. For a while though, weeks, months maybe longer it will come back and hurt again. It's normal, it's what trauma does. Pat yourself on the back. Have a celebration ration and talk to your partner regardless of the cost. Some day I'll buy you a beer!

Obviously this did impact you and will continue to for some time to come. Please don't be ashamed of anxiety, fear or your great luck in life. You've taken something horrendous and shared it with many others so maybe more can be done about refugees. Keep being an amazing young man.

Ryan, as someone who also does my own battles with anxiety, I know that just being out there by yourself took courage. The fact that you headed straight for a difficult, unknown, and potentially life threatening situation, and stayed the course to help those people shows how pure and caring your heart is. Sharing your experience, your struggles and your criticisms of yourself takes tremendous strength and resilience. I'm so impressed and proud to follow you and Sophie in your journeys. I know you don't feel great about what migrants are going through to try to find a better life, but you should at least feel good about how you responded to a group in crisis. In my seventy two years going round the sun I have found that I am often in a place at a time when I think it is for some "fun" thing only to discover I have arrived at those coordinates for a purpose totally unexpected. I admire what the two of you have accomplished in such a short time and strongly disagree that you are there "just for fun." You are there with purpose even when that purpose has yet to be revealed.
Life at Sea means "standing by." Standing by ones watch; standing by day-work; standing by at the lines; standing by to WITNESS; standing by to observe. Life at Sea is a Calling of the highest order. What is WONDERFUL is that you ENJOY being there and Standing By.
This story is a Testament to both of you and your calling. You are a perfect team together and from afar. That is NOT just for fun. You proved during this Watch that you will Stand By when called, you will turn out of your bunk when needed. When I was young and sailed as an Ordinary, the Bos'n told me that if I Stand My Watch, Turn to when called, and carried a bucket with me when I got seasick, I would do just fine.
Both of you are Blessings. For those at Sea or learning from your videos, you are Blessings.
The emotions you feel are the Release. You thought the crises to be encountered at Sea were storms. People clinging to life on a scrap of wood will do just as well.
You are a Mensch. God Bless you and Sophie.

While we are not so religious we are spiritual. I am a believer in karma and the universe having a plan.. thus the idea that sometimes we are in the right place at the right time. I think this was the case that day... if I would have not gone the easy coast of the islands I would have not been in place, if I would have left 6 hours earlier or later. It's strange how those things happen

@@RyanSophieSailing I come from a long line of Men Who Go Down To The Sea In Ships. My father took me offshore when I was eight. The complete AWE of the endless horizon, water and sky, shook me to my core. It was my mystical awakening. The link between the Sea and the Spirit is without time stretching far back into our collective unconscious. The Talmud speaks of the vocation of sailor as appropriate for a Torah Scholar and we are told that the sailors on Jonah's ship, when they returned to shore brought sacrifices to the Temple.
Sometimes when we engage in such an Appointment to Stand By, we feel guilty about the AWE experienced during and after the event. The fact is that we GROW as a result, we feel pride that when called we responded, and we feel guilt for such self-knowledge. My father, a Master Mariner would tell you DON'T. You were tested and met the challenge. You will be tested again. Feel secure that you will step up on Deck to Stand By.
These are moments that will stay with you for the rest of your life. They are transformative. How Wonderful. There are no accidents.

Wow! what a powerful film guys. As a fellow sailor I couldn't begin to appreciate how you must have felt. I'm usually an 'emotionally dry' type of person but that brought a tear. As far as your contribution, it would have been immense for those guys on the raft just having visibility of your mast, and knowing someone was there would have given them so much hope in a time of need. You've certainly made me sit up and give a sh*t so hopefully you will have had that effect on many others. Well done guys.

You did what you're required by sea law to do, and at request you stayed on the scene. Good man, good sailor. (The tanker?....) What you experienced are the choices already made for us and the people on those boats - you just arrived at a place where the consequences of our how world works (or doesn't) is within sight.
With some effort, this could become the African Century - when it all turns around. End corruption, authoritarian strong men; arrest greed - it's clear the people are ready to work for a better life, to risk their lives for it. Anything we can do to help - as you've done.

You should go and visit some more places in Africa. I know that there isn't much infrastructure foe cruisers except in South Africa so it may be a fly in thing.
However, if you do get to cruise, try the east coast up to Kenya. It won't be easy but you will enjoy it.
My own experience is Nigeria, Cameroon, Niger, Benin, Togo, and Kenya.
Don't even think about cruising west Africa though. It could be very bad.
      Stay well and Stay safe.

I think that the best you could do is to report the sighting the raft and move on. Staying endangers you and the boat. You should move on. The people in the boat have traveled that far and know of their danger. Everyones life is not everyones responsibility, that’s never been true. Rescue is on the way. Its up to them to provide the assistance needed, its what they do for that reason.
No doubt these people were being transported by mules, involved in human smuggling. There is a systematic smuggling buisnesses that prey on desperate people promising them freedom for all their money then just dump them on countries that will sympathize with the situation. Cooperating with this system of human smuggling by accepting illegal migrants just increases the smuggling of humans. The only way to stop this horrible system that is overwhelming countries and communities is to send them home when they are rescued. Only showing those who participate in this illegal, unsafe operation is to deny the imigration.

Sadly, Ryan- you could NOT have saved the main raft without help. SV 'Polar Seal' is nor large enough to safely carry 39 -40 people in a bad sea state. Clearly, there were other rafts out there as well. You needed to leave to protect Polar Seal from a collision in the darkness. You were a beacon of hope, your arrival signaled rescue- a gift to them. Thank you for your service and knowing when to leave for your safety.
