Hortus Schoenbrunnensis and the history of carnivorous plants at Schönbrunn

  • Schönbrunn as a Gesamtkunstwerk of castle, the gardens and equaly the botanical collections is one of the most popular tourist attractions in Austria and has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1996. An important part and the secret heart of Schönbrunn are the botanical collections. It was developed over centuries and was adapted und used over this long periode by politics, society and technology. The collection of carnivorous plants is part of this collection tradition that has lasted over 450 years. The history of collecting carnivorous plants in Schönbrunn is closely intertwined with the development of Schönbrunn's botanical collection.
    This presentation will give a brief introduction in the historical development of the Botanical Collections in Vienna, overview of the main plantgroups and families represented in the collections and detailed information on the diversity of Carnivorous Plants and their history in the greenhouses Schönbrunn.
    Bio: Manfred Edlinger is a master gardener in the Schönbrunn botanical collection and takes care of the tropical plants collection, including tropical Begonias, Aroids and Carnivorous plants. He has been working with carnivorous plants for 20 years. Another area of ​​interest is garden history in general and the development of Schönbrunn in particular.
    Daniel Rohrauer is a graduate of the Higher Federal School of Horticulture Schönbrunn, has been working in and with the historical botanical collection of the Austrian Federal Gardens since 2004 and is head gardener of the institute of Botanical Collections since 2014. He deals with the historical and botanical development of plant collections as part of historical gardens, gardening techniques and the meaning of Plants for people and nature.
