Quite a bit to unpack here. When jointing the face of the board it's best to let just the jointer bed make contact with the board and not the fence. This helps ensure you aren't referencing a part that hasn't been flattened yet. Once the face is flat, then that will reference against the fence to square the edge to it. Until the face is flat, the fence isn't required. As for the rest, #teamroundover all the way. Don't short arm shame me. Not cool.
