All good answers, specially the running at night for me. I watch the whole 7 hours of Kerry’s video on the first Cocodona. Y’all made a great team. Shed a tear when goodbyes were said before the finish line.
Happy Trails to you at Cocodona! I've been glued to your training series each week, anxious to hear your updates & advice. I paced a friend at Cocodona last year and caught the 200 mile bug. I'm currently training for Moab in the fall. I really appreciate the time you have invested in this vlog. Hope to see you on the trails someday.
Hey man, thanks for putting this series together. I've enjoyed checking in with you each week to see how our training lines up. I can't wait to kick off my first 200 in a week. Feels crazy to say that. Lol
Good luck Wes! “It’s going to be so painful too”, I can’t imagine the pain. Yesterday I did my longest run at 23mi with a little over 4k of vert mostly on technical trail (a lot on the AT) - it took me 8 hours. Today I am stiff and sore and mentally kind of zoned out. I cannot imagine what running more than ten times that does to you and what the recovery process feels like. Thanks for bringing us on this journey and I hope you reach all of your goals!
Oh yeah Wes!! 🎉🎉 Good luck for Cocodona! 💪🏻🍻 I Will follow you from Italy while I'll working and everytime possible! 🎉🎉 Wow It seems Like Yesterday that you did the race! Time flies! 😅 Good luck Again Wes!! Stay strong!! A big hug from Italy! 🇮🇹🤟🌟
Good luck at Cocodona you’re gonna crush it! Is there a way you can do a video on how you load your backpack with the 5 L? I’m sure it’s a 3 L bladder and probably a bunch of flask spread throughout your pack. If I’m guessing correctly just seems like a lot of weight but you have to do it if you wanna stay hydrated in the desert.
I’m going to try to make a video later of some of the packing and planning this week. I’ll try to capture the pack. To get 5 L in my pack I expect to carry: 1.5 L in a large flask with hose 1.5 L in second large flask that will replace the first. 2 x 750ml flasks stored in pack side pockets 600 ml chest flask (probably refilled by the 750s)
Great stuff Wes...love your authenticity...have an amazing Cocodona experience...very much looking forward to seeing/hearing all about your adventure...keep on keeping on...
Great series Wes! Thanks for sharing your preparation, experiences and insights. Best of luck in AZ. I'm making my first attempt at becoming a real ultramarathoner by going beyond 50K in the Elden Crest 38. Hope to see you fly by me somewhere between Fort Tuthill and the finish :-) (oh wait, you'll most likely be done before the Elden Crest even starts!).
Thanks for answering my question! I have a good starting spot to dig into some coaching research now. Can’t wait to follow your adventures at Cocodona…. That burger probably tasted extra sweet after 146 miles, but I’ll take the credit and accept your compliments, however. 😂
Hi Wes. Really enjoying this training series - it's gone so quickly! Question: how much focus do you put on your nutrition while training? Do you have a specific way of eating that you thrive on? And does it change at all at different points in the training plan? Thanks, and all the best for Cocodona!
Not a lot of focus I’m afraid, I don’t have a good nutrition story. I try to eat a lot to give me the energy I need and to recover, but I feel pretty ignorant about the details of carbs and protein. I have a lot of room for improvement!
@wplate wanting to do it is a good start though. It's hard when there are so many other things to prioritise! I struggle with that myself sometimes, and I don't run ultras! (Yet 😄) Maybe you could think about something small and simple to implement, get consistent with it, and go from there? Like one meal, or one specific food you want to eat more of.
On the question about having a youtube audience. I think he was referring to the idea of, you stop at an AS and your wife shows you all the likes, comments, etc. How does that help? Personally, any praise on trail from anyone helps. I hope, when i have them eventually, that my hallucinations cheer me on
Interesting clarification about stopping at an AS and learning about social media feedback... That hasn't happened often but I have done Instagram Lives during an event, and that immediate feedback from friends cheering me on in real time is definitely motivating. If there have been times when Leah has shared a reply or comment on a post, it would certainly have helped motivate.
You have mentioned on a few occasions that Schnebly Hill to Munds is difficult. What about it makes it so hard? Is it just the fact you’re late in a very long race or is there something specific that makes it a difficult section? Thanks.
I suspect it’s all in my head. I haven’t seen it in the light so I don’t even know what it looks like. At that point in the course I’ve been exhausted and alone, a real low point.
Looking forward to following you from afar as you race next week! You’re always a crowd favorite in the live chat 😊 have some great type 2 fun!
Thank you!

Special bonds are formed on the trail. ❤️
Wishing you the best of luck Wes. Thanks for all the time you put into your videos. Your a great inspiration and I really enjoy watching. Thanks ❤

God bless you on your run, I know what it’s like before I run my ultras. Being nervous is a good sign.

You got this! So, so impressive! I'm still waiting on your back story video :) Enjoy your Cocodona sufferfest!
I know I know I know! I’m sorry I haven’t done that yet! I have not forgotten, just haven’t found and devoted the time. I hope soon after Cocodona.
@@wplate not trying to nag, just interested :)

@wplate thanks for the response, Wes. Eating enough is definitely the most important thing, eh 😄
@@ErinDHM I want to do better and feel better from it, I haven’t succeeded in making it a priority. 😢

Can you do video about your gear and how you approach logistical stuff with the 200 mile distance. Very curious
Will try to capture some of that. I recorded some stuff during packing. There's also this: ruclips.net/video/zX2N4uk3GrQ/видео.html
Always inspiring to see your progress. We sent you an email, take a look.
Thank you!
👏Your 40 minutes easy time and distance is my 40 difficult.
For me the road promotes faster speed. My trail speed is quite a lot slower.
