Hello Charlie. After 45 years of struggling and trying different trumpet methods this was the simple trick that made trumpet playing easy and fun. Now I don't need to worry "how will my lips work today?"
Total revelation both in sound Fidelity and range...my teacher demanded I hold the trumpet straight out ....I have an mild overbite, your test found a perfect trumpet position angled 25 percent down to its original position....I have much a more natural pop, thank you Charlie.
Thanks for taking the time to teach us how to learn to play trumpet, I haven't play for 20 years and now at 68 yo decided to grab my trumpet. I am not professional neither read music, but learning to read and olay.
WHY DIDNT I WATCH THIS VIDEO YEARS AGO I was just doing my normal practice stuff and noticed I was pressed on too hard on my bottom lip /teeth. Decided to google ‘trumpet overbite’ to see if anyone was talking about angle and there you are. Of course you’ve got the perfect video Anyway, just followed your advice and I can’t believe how much of a difference it’s made. I’m not sure if I was too low or high before, but just being aware of where I should be aiming for means I can be more consistent This video + the embouchure video are absolutely essential for all trumpeters, I think THANK YOUUU
Charlie, you are the best online trumpet tips teacher and I don’t say that lightly. Unlike some arrogant players, one in particular, you have no selfish arrogance, you speak low but clear and your horn tone is just beautiful. Keep doing what you are doing because the young trumpeters and other beginners, intermediate and likely some pros could use these vids. Thanks. G
Thanks so much for this tip! I was playing at the wrong angle for years...just imitating some of the greats: Freddie, Nicholas Payton... etc. I did your test and man I can now make some jumps in register that I couldn’t do before. I felt like I had to change my setup to get high notes and couldn’t understand how guys could play several octaves with the same setup up.. thanks again
Fantastic. Played all my life and this is the first time I’ve had a “scientific” way to know how To position the horn. I’m gonna start every day like this for a while. And BTW, you four step embouchure is GOLDEN!!! Thanks.
I have been keeping my phone's notifications turned off because I hate the distraction. I like your vids so much I not only subscribed but I also turned notifications on fo YT. Thanks for sharing so much trumpet wisdom.
Charlie, thank you for so generously sharing your knowledge and expertise. Having been a brass player for over 40 years myself, I am so encouraged to be able to go to youtube and find you explaining things I never heard quite that way before.
Thank you. This is the only video that exposes this problem properly. I always knew something was fundamentally wrong. Playing the trumpet was always at least slightly "uncomfortable" and uncertain. Lower register always out of tune and raspy. Mid register always and exclusively brilliant. Upper register driven by the lower lip and once I get to high D my lips didn't know what to do as if they couldn't move anywhere. And I never felt tension in my corners and that's because I never used them. Now I feel the corners in use. I've lost my range but the low notes are so much deeper and warmer. Mid register is consistent as well. I think it'll just take time to regain the range but I didn't have much of one to begin with due to not having the proper use of my embouchure. Hopefully will get good gains in the future out of this. Will reply to confirm the progress. Thanks again!
Hey Charlie, great tutorial!... After 35 years playing professionally i had to begin from zero due to a dental adjustment on my left front tooth... i will apply this tip to find the "sweet spot" Thanks
This helped me so much- my tone was good but I always felt weird and it could be much more fuller and my articulation range endurance etc were all effected this helped me so much that my natrual angle is downwards- I have a teacher that's an orchestral principal trumpet and he dosent really help me with my problem and dosent notice it
Fantastic revellation to ME!? (With Odd teeth..) In a Split-second just following YOUR advice here? I achieved Very High Notes, I've NEVER come across up to now with utterly ease?? You're a HERO to ME!! THANK YOU SO MUCH!!
I played for years with jaw put forward and trumpet in straight position. I always had a very open and rich tone, but limited range cause I couldn´t do no register jumps with tonguing a-ä-e-i. Weeks ago I found out what you are talking about - the natural jaw setting and it is true, all of the sudden the articulation goes by itself, but in my case the tone turned to total crap. I hope it is just because of changing old habits and developing the new path. Sometimes I think I´ll nver be able to play again... Thanks for the vid, though.
René Mareau hey man I'm having the same problem and fear you used to have. My tone used to be open and rich but now because of accidently changing my embochure trying to play high with practicing incorrectly, my tone turned to crap and aldo I can play higher, I'm scared of never getting my tone back. Do you still have this problem? And Charlie, if you could help me out on figuring out what I can do to get my tone back I'll be eternally grateful man
You are my hero this video has changed my life thank you very much and I'm still expecting your response as per my request to be one of your students. I'm the guy that called you and I told you I'm from Nigeria,I also send a Dm to you on Instagram,I will be expecting your feedback.
Charlie, your lessons apply to other wind instruments. You've certainly helped my Flute playing re air stream. Breath control & tongue shape works on Clt & Saxes. You are helping all of us to be better players. Thanks.
Hi Charlie. I plat cornet and had to take a medical break recently. When I started again it was awful, but I have found your tutorials of great help in establishing things like upper register etc.. Thanks. Alan. U.K.
very helpful- ive been made fun of because of my embouchure. but knowing this really humbled me into not thinking bad about other people's embouchures. I naturally have a bit of an overbite, but when I play, my embouchure is a far underbite, and it's just natural to my teeth and my jaw. so thanks
Charlie, it is wonderful how this really works! This changes everything else to much better. I am from Brazil and I would like to translate this video to portuguese, if you permit, of course.
This is great! As with every other physical skill, the body alignment has to be in its natural position. It's taken me way too many decades to learn that.
Don't know why I've felt I need to see straight into the trumpet's bell when standing in front of a mirror (a beginner here). Will definitely try this next time 🙌
Yes! learning with a stand of music in front of me, I have had to adjust to be able to see the sheet music and I have grown familiar with playing slightly off center of my lips to the left. I am used to it and it doesn't bother me...but at least I can play two trumpets at once...not different notes though ;)
I've been wondering about this for awhile. I naturally play at a slightly lower angle than what you do according to this video, and I've been trying to play more parallel to the ground, but I've never been able to have the same range or sound quality. I assumed it was because I had formed bad habits when I first learned how to play. I tilted my head back ridiculously far to keep the same angle in relationship to my face but still have the 10 degrees above parallel required for marching.
Hey Charlie, any tips for finding the perfect mouthpiece for my lips? Im still using the standard one which came with the trumpet but I feel like a more fitting one could really help me.
Really nice to get à couple tips for the embouchure, I wish I could've had that some time ago though, I have to play the hindemith sonata tomorrow for an exam :-S your vids have been very useful:-)
I’ve been playing trumpet since 8th grade and am currently a senior. The other day me and my BD sat down and practiced and he pointed out my overbite and when I tried to play “straight forward” , I couldn’t play a thing
I have a problem losing the w feel in my top lip very easily. Sometimes anything above e or f# start sounding thin Sometimes there is no sound, just air . What am I doing wrong?
Charlie, very interesting. Will try it when I get home. What about side to side. When I play, it feels like I get the most pleasing tone with the horn angled to the left somewhat.
Hi @Charlie, I'm looking your videos but i didn't understand one thing. Playing with my natural jaw position, the trumpet is tilted. In the video "How To form a trumpet Embouchure" you say to align the teeth in step 1. However, this means playing with the mouthpiece aligned with the teeth and therefore with the trumpet straight. What am I doing wrong?
I have not played for very long, but I'm pretty sure I'm doing something wrong. I used to play almost straight down, but for the past 6 months I've been trying to raise my trumpet without affecting my posture. Now I play rather upwards for low notes, but I have to go back to playing straight down in order to hit a high C. Do I just need a better embouchure, or is my technique fundamentally wrong? I should add that my tone in any range is much worse when I play pointing down.
and when you want to change a note, do you have to necessarily change tongue position (like other brass players do) or do you have to change your lips position (make it wider or narrow)?
I know this video was from 7 years ago, but what about the pivot system. Books have been literally written about this. Does this have any place in your thesis here?
Hi Charlie! I have overbite as well and I was told that my front teeth should align, meaning that I have to push out my lower jaw, in order to form a correct and healthy embouchure - so do you mean now that I actually don't have to do it? Thanks!
hello friends,i'm changing my embouchure since a week.My old embouchure position on the left but now i'm trying to get middle but i have a mole on middle at top lip. There isnt a problem for now but this may cause problems in the future?
What about the mouthpiece position on the lips? I mean, when I do lip buzzing, it doesn't happen in the middle of my lips, but a little bit left from it. But when I play the trumpet, it's most comfortable, if I place the mouthpiece in the middle.
Its ok if your mouthpiece is a little off center to one side or the other. However, it must be the same position that you play in...it is the same thing. If it isn't working when you play in the same position as your trumpet playing then it is one of two things, most likely. If you are getting air only and no buzz, they are too open...focus the lips a little more. If the sound is distorted and hard to blow the air through then you are too tight and must create a larger space between the lips...relax the aperture. Good luck!
So, would you still recommend this approach for someone who has an overbite? Or is the more recent "How To Form a Trumpet Embouchure" system (where you have to align your teeth) a better way to go? Thank you.
Hey Charlie, that tips and trick are really usefull, but i have some difficulties now, because i put braces on my teeth,do you know tips and trick how to recover the skill after putting the braces on ?,because it's really hard now to play trumpet again, and i'm getting tired easily..Thanks a lot
Hey Charlie what you are explaining in this video is really interesting and many people underestimate this topic. I've always played with jaw in natural position (I've an overbite just like yours, maybe a little bit bigger) and I felt comfortable with that but I had problems with range. I found out the reason was that the lower lip wasn't vibrating since it was completely underneath the upper one. So I decided to experiment a different embouchure with the teeth aligned (jaw forward) and in a couple days the I could play almost an octave higher although I felt a little bit of jaw pain. Should I just try to get back to the natural jaw position and let the lower lip go out? Thanks in advance.
Hello Charlie.
After 45 years of struggling and trying different trumpet methods this was the simple trick that made trumpet playing easy and fun. Now I don't need to worry "how will my lips work today?"
Yeah, this tip seems so obvious, but clearly not many of us knew it. I'm grateful for RUclips, and very very grateful teachers like Charlie.

I'm older trumpet player, just been practicing for several months. Thank you for your help.
Thank you. I learned more from just now than in years of lessons.
I have been keeping my phone's notifications turned off because I hate the distraction. I like your vids so much I not only subscribed but I also turned notifications on fo YT. Thanks for sharing so much trumpet wisdom.

Thank you very much for this video! I'm sure this detail will change my life as a trumpet player!

Thank you so much Charlie. It actually really helped :) I can't wait to get my second valve fixed so I can play even more :)
Charlie muito obrigado pelas dicas de exercícios de trompete.
This helped me so much, thank you! :)
I wonder if this also goes over to larger brass, such as trombone.

hey charlie, what mouthpiece is that? a Monette? It looks very interesting.
家で練習出来て羨ましい!
for marching if you need to play at an angle just move ur head with it
People used to make fun of my way of playing cuz I look weird but I was the 3rd best as a 7th grader and the best now as eight grader
i was 1st chair in 7th grade lol great work tho! Keep on playin!
