  • Thousands of people have been evacuated in parts of New South Wales, Australia, with authorities planning to evacuate even more from flood-affected suburbs in parts of Sydney, which is set to see its worst flooding in 60 years.
Unrelenting rains have swelled rivers over the past three days in the country's most populous state, causing widespread damage and triggering calls for mass evacuations.
On Saturday, a house was seen floating down the Manning River as flash flooding hit the area. Local media reported the home had been rented by a couple who were due to be married that day.
"There are around 15,000 people who have been evacuated from the mid-north coast from their homes," New South Wales Premier Gladys Berejiklian said on Monday. "Nineteen evacuation orders have been issued and potentially more to come."
Emergency services at one point Monday were called out to rescue around 20 dogs. The owners had earlier left with several dogs but had to call the state's emergency service to help with moving the remainder of the canines.
Large parts of the country's east coast is expected to get hit by more heavy rains Monday due to a combination of a tropical low over northern Western Australia and a coastal trough off New South Wales. March 21st, 2021.
