Hey bud great video, very enjoyable to watch. Just picked up a 1926 from the Dealers in Cardiff. The axe will be used in the woods of rural France from Friday onward. Got lots of inspiration from your video and will look forward to watching more of what you have on your channel

This little hatchet has been as close to me as you can get with a one tool option for general bushcraft. I also struggled with these types of axes as a bushcrafter but found them to be great no nonsense tools when compared to traditional axes.

Always used STIHL growing up (Gransfors Bruk axes however), then had a STIHL saw for a while as an adult. A couple years ago I decided to try Husqvarna, and it's not been quite as good in my opinion, but it's right there. I think the real problem with modern chainsaws is they're regulated like mad and choked off so they cannot perform the best they could - carb compliant crap and all that.

@@fog360 cheers mate.. Quick question, I'm just getting my starter kit together other than being in the Army years ago, this is my very first rodeo lol. With this hatchet will I need to bother buying a saw? I only need to get bits of firewood.. I don't wanna spend more money than necessary, I've already spent around £600 lol. Cheers mate.

When I was teenager many years ago Stihl axes were relabeled Fiskars. I am still on the hunt for one to add to my collection but they are less common than the old school bus fire axes or even the older full size ones. Sure, you can get a new full size fire axe but I do like character in my axes!

@@fog360 although in reality, the Fiskars axes are another modern take that are absolutely amazing. I have been using them for ages as well and have yet to have one fail me. If you get the chance give one of the hatchets like the X7 or newer black hafted 7350s (I think that is the designation) a try.
Edit: I was wrong, the new black ones are the 7550. Had to pull it out of my work bag.

Hay brother you may need to cancel that weekend, I am worried for ya the snow and temperatures are dropping all the time. I can tell you mate the weather and snow by me is darn freezing , unless you all have hot tents. It’s going to be a tough camp and you probably won’t learn anything. Just watching you six mate , first rule of survival ,,, don’t put yourself in a survival situation. !!!

I won't have a chance to test it until Christmas but I'll be sure to let you know how I find it. I have about 2 acres of ground at my house in France with generally small trees like Hazel, Small Oaks, Sweet Chestnut trees and Willows around it. The last owners planted the willows. They fall over in storms because they are weak. The climate is too dry for them. All I'm doing is harvesting small trees for firewood and so what I needed was a good limbing axe for relatively small branches. I have a Stihl MS261 that has been fantastic for felling but it's overkill for limbing these small trees and in any case.... it's against the law to use noisy machinery between 12 noon and 2 pm :-) and I often forget. No problem using an axe so I can keep working through the 2 hour French lunch time.

Hey Foggy. Great to see you again, Brother. I love the Siberian style head on the 1926 hatchet. I see on the link you provided they make a larger model with a 70 mm/28" handle, which would be ideal for my needs. The only change I would like to see is that the cutting edge of the bit would be straight instead of rounded. Thank you for sharing, Charlie

chas3457 hello Old friend, yes the do different size in both, I was going to get the bigger one to show. But went for the hatchet instead. I will try to get hold of one as I think it could be a very useful tool indeed. I am hoping to get some more Stihl gear to show on the channel. I’ve had a few calls today saying well done it’s about time i started to show the woodsman gear on the channel. Great to here from you mate hope all is good with you.

I like the traditional axe, the other is not something I choose. Its blade taper looks wrong. That said you gave my project as I own a couple of Stihls. I need to sharpen my axes and adjust on a hatchet taper.
