Not really a problem with proper species selection, especially with the Geosesarma as an Apex Predator. It's more of an issue with overstocked systems that deplete the microfauna population and require feeding, especially with species like Mandarins in a Marine Aquarium that're obligate copepod predators. As long as the system's housed in an Enclosure of sufficient size and volume...
just dont stuff a million species at once in a vivarium, always have less predators yet still make sure predators thrive, and put microfauna and herbivores in an ecosystem first to get situated and memorize hiding spots that way they dont die easily
the crabs won't be an issue. I have mine for 6+ months now and they are rarely to be seen because if enough substrate provided, they'll dig underground and you pretty much never see them. And they also are cannibalistic. Just don't get mourning geckos and you're good to go!

Make such a thing a project with your kids. It teaches them to cooperate, it connects you with each other and a common topic, it can be fun for all involved. It must not be animals on that level of complexity. Make an easy one, a small version with a handful of small animals. Or an ant farm. I heard they are amazing.
Just a terrarium made in a repurposed, gallon-sized, glass pickle jar can enchant a child (I got mine from a restaurant). I made one with each of my kids. My oldest and I also did the monarch butterflies from caterpillars when he was little, thanks to a kit he received as a gift. Things like that take much less time, effort, and money than a big project, and can still be rewarding and educational. Take care and stay well. ❤️
Just a little heads up when feeding crabs: touch the food to their legs, they taste with their legs and will take food easier that way. Your way is by no means wrong, just thought I'd let you know. Amazing creation, the Rainstorm blew me away, really well done.

My buddy has a fish tank that turned into a snake tank, that turned into an entire terrarium over time and it's been in his living room for years. Every time I go over there we end up staring at and talking about it for at least an hour or two. Having an entire ecosystem that can take care of itself is such an accomplishment and such a good way to teach your kids about life and death.
@@collincortright8640Getting a fish tank is the easy bit..but i have no idea about what plants and creatures to put in that are compatible. But as you say its the best feature you could have, gets people thinking and talking.
Not really - he was feeding a lot there. Otherwise this really small tank would never have been able to sustain dozens of crabs and gecko. We even saw him feeding the gecko fruit pap and the crabs worms&crickets. Dont get me wrong, its a beautiful project. But more of a carefully sustained decorative farm situation than a self-balanced ecosystem. For that to be true he would have to stop all feeding and fertilizing, which he obviously did as well seeing how thos plants exploded. This is a showgarden in a bottle. Containing pets. Beautiful to look at - but not an ecosystem.

Wow I love this. Imagine making a half dozen of these tanks in different shapes if needed, to showcase replica ecosystems found around the world. The flora/fauna matching what’s found naturally. Amazing!
You know... it really is interesting how humans treat certain species. You mentioned not being comfortable with leaving the gekos in the tank... but then crabs are just allowed to rip each other apart. It is just an interesting observation how the instant something has a skeleton instead of a exoskeleton we start valuing its life more than other animals. Like when I saw the baby gekos I felt a pit in my stomach about them being killed and eaten, but then stopped and asked myself why I didn't feel the same way for the other animal babies. Neat tank over all!
@@user-gn4ts8jb7n i mean it is a neat tank. But really think about why we value some lives more than others. The thing that got me thinking about it is Hayao Miyazaki's Nausicaa film and manga. He specifically designed the wildlife to be giant insects with no humanizing features and then made the story about how all life has value...
Well, I assume (hope) with most people it’s not about invertebrate vs vertebrate, but rather level of sentience. Crabs are neurologically much more primitive than most reptiles... and people eat them pretty often too. Viewing certain animals as a food source requires people to either forfeit some of their perceived value OR adopt a cognitively dissonant view of it. The short answer is that crabs are not proven to perceive pain and suffering to the same degree that a gecko is known to, crabs are often viewed as a food source while captive geckos are often pets, and crabs have way fewer characteristics and expressions that humans can empathize with.
@@MsScarletwings i mean yeah... but why is animal afood source and animal b friend? Like food source/pain doesn't fully explain it because think of how much people eat animals that we KNOW can feel pain. Like if we put a dog into the same conditions cows in a slaughter house it would be called animal cruelty.
@@kid14346 oh Theres no real solid “why” behind how certain animals became food and others became pets besides the luck of geographic distribution and time. Typically, animals that become major cultural food sources are either - plentiful in the wild and easy to harvest on a large scale sustainably - easy to domesticate and breed in captivity Crustaceans like crabs are a good example of the former. Shrimp are basically the cockroaches of the ocean, and they are a very nutritious AND low-Mercury source of marine protein. Crabs breed like crazy and coastal civilizations learned quickly that they make for good eating when cooked properly. Chickens are a great example of the latter. They were not only useful to human populations for their meat, but also for their egg production. The original wild chickens (red jungle fowl) were unique from other known birds in that their reproduction speed changed depending on the availability of food in the environment. Farmers learned that if you kept them very well fed, they kept laying eggs and breeding rapidly.
To say this is merely fascinating, will be an insult to you. I watched this with much interest, then watched it with my two grandsons 8 and nearly 6. Now they want to try a similar project with me. Thank you for such a beautiful demonstration of life and you documented everything very well!!!!
How about a video where you show and tell us about the cleaning, feeding and all the work you have to do to keep that ecosystem balanced. What kind of problems you had like mold or things like that... to me its the most besutiful terrarium/paludarium/aquarium ive seen on youtube. Love that jungle!
If you watch the playlist in the series of these videos, he mentions routine maintenance. It’s quite minimal once the tank is established; (about 30% water change every month, and routine glass cleaning with a microfibre). I would like to know about minimizing algae growth however
That was absolutely enthralling to watch, like a nature documentary only so much more interesting because it’s being facilitated so masterfully in your house. I could watch hours of this content.
Its fascinating the level of easy success you had with the vampire crabs, to the point of worrying about a takeover. Did you have to regularly feed them, or were they able to scavenge most of their own food?
Fantastic Doc, it’s been a privilege to watch this, the fact you’re building your projects for longevity which is so much better than other channels “one and done” style of projects, also I like the cinematic style of this video without exaggerating. Can’t wait for the salt water ecosystem. P.S. “and moss started to appear” , just like my armpits
I don't know how your video got to me, but I'm glad that it did, because maaaaaan, that's awesome. Really beautiful. And it's a relief to know that you also have a compassion towards them, and expanding environment for geckoes

Part of what I find interesting about owning an ecosystem is it's like you're their god. If you really wanted to, you could cut off their water supply for 3 days and incur a drought upon them, or you could add hazardous new environmental factors to see how they cope with it. But since the majority of us aren't bug sadists, we just let them live peaceful and happy lives (as happy as nature gets, anyway). Basically, their fate lies entirely in your control.
Not gonna lie this is one of the most well made videos ive seen in quite some time. Really kept me interested. Shots are very nice too. When you are filming the tank, it looks like its a rainforest from an alien world. Very cool.
People fail to remember we are also nature, and our instinct to help is also natural. If you want to help, help. That would still be “nAtUrE hApPeNiNg”. We are not Gods, we are just more powerful and thus perhaps have a moral imperative to make the world a better place. Get over yourselves, people.
You should do an episode on the system its self - filtration, water condition, pumps, lights, glass maintenance, all of the up keep would be very interesting.
Now this is the type of content RUclips needs. These type of videos are so rare as nobody else would put as much effort into ideas like You did ! Well Done, this is one of the best videos I have ever watched and actually enjoyed every single second of it. Keep it going !
Such a beautiful ecosystem that was created. It must be very peaceful especially at night hearing the geckos chirp and that rain inside the tank along with the soft lighting.
This is like actually the coolest thing I’ve ever seen. I’ve always been so fascinated with the jungle biome. But I’ve never wanted the dangers. Something like this would be like perfect for me if I knew anything about the proper plant life and animal life.
I always knew ecosystem balancing was no small feat. Losing one species or introducing an invasive one can destroy it entirely. This one is no exception. The dominant species has grown too much both times. I wonder what else it needs to reach a perfect balance? I gotta say, I love these videos. Making a living self contained ecosystem looks like a lot of fun. Some day in the future I'd like to make one!
Well that was just incredible. You have such talent in recreating complex, thriving habitats for beautiful little critters. Just subscribed and can’t wait to watch more of your builds!

The moment he said he needs to balance out the population of crabs so he introduced geckos. Had me thinking that even in a highly controlled environment ( rain, introduction of new animals) nature's law is consistent all over the place that is to build an ecosystem you need a balanced population of species with foodchain
This is also a great demonstration of the fragility of an ecosystem, conditions must be just right and all the species must be able to balance each other's population
You've done a ton of work, yet, you've made it interesting and accessible to everybody. Great job man, it's plain to see you're proud of your work, and I'm glad you are.

It would be so interesting i think to make 2 of the same setups with the exact same species and see if they develop differently! Or perhaps 1 different species and observe that impact. A big part of all of this is also pure chance so id love to see how that plays out.
Dude, this is my new favorite channel. I don’t have little ecosystems or wasps or fish nor do I want to get some in the future but you’re really good at informing people like me who don’t really have a passion for it into something they love to learn about
It really inspired me! I built an open ecosystem and it's really tiny, I am keeping in some springtails, mites, snails and critters for now and planted some moss and plants. It's been days and weeks since I made it and I will keep it in my classroom, once it comes together completely established.
Really cool! So much going on! Side note....the baby geckos aren't technically "clones" because they don't have identical DNA to the parent. In this type of parthenogenisis the chromosomes are still crossed over and there is recombination. So.... new DNA!!! FREAKING AWESOME!

You know... it really is interesting how humans treat certain species.
Wow. You just signed off an existential crisis with "neat tank!"
Typically, animals that become major cultural food sources are either
- plentiful in the wild and easy to harvest on a large scale sustainably
- easy to domesticate and breed in captivity
Crustaceans like crabs are a good example of the former.
