@@musicaltheatrefan2k226 Higher does not always mean better. Jodi didn't need to belt much but her voice still managed to resonate with the orchestra to give the audience the chill and emotions. Sierra's version is suitable for stage performance, where singing is supposed to be showy to draw attention. So stop saying which one is better! They are good in their own context: a movie and a stage performance.
I think what truly touching about this song is Howard Ashman and Jodi Benson put in their heart and soul in making it happen. You could feel the glimpse of hope the Mermaid has despite knowing it’s near impossible. Very much like us the mortal longing for a life which we wanted so much but simply too hard to reach
Totally agreed. The new version is good but it didn't give me goosebumps. The original really has a classic timeless feel to it. Listening to this feels like listening to an angel
They released Halle's full version of the reprise. I think she did a good job but It didn't give me goosebumps the way this animated version did. The original reprise have a classic, timeless feel to it that the remake lacked. Whenever I listened to this, it just takes my breath away and It makes me feel something special. Everything was perfect, The animation, the soundtrack and Jodi's voice is truly a match made in heaven.
In her version the outro is sung in a different note and hurts my ears a bit to be honest. I agree with you about this version and how impactful it is to the listener. When I close my eyes and listen to the intro of this song I see a mother holding a baby in her arms, precious and loving; she is 'whisper singing' as to not wake the baby up. When I listen to Halle Bailey's version and close my eyes I see Halle Bailey singing into a microphone, holding her hand up to the IEM in her ear, tapping her foot to keep time... Now when it comes to the outro part of the song in this version there is a build up of confidence as she is no longer trying to keep her voice down and hidden. She knows what she wants and she is going to get it. She wanted to be part of humanity before, but now (to her) she has even more of a reason. This transition is heard when she sings "But I know something's starting right now" with her confidence in her vocals become more and more evident until the climax of the reprise. Halle Bailey's version does not have the same nor similar buildup. Jodi Benson honestly may not have Halle Bailey's diva quality when it comes to singing but what she does have which is just incredible in my opinion is the ability to express the emotions and feelings of the character she plays in the songs she sings.
Love how this song is in sequence of how one must dream when she asks: 🎵"What" (0:23) in the first lyrics when she wonders about what she have to do to be with him.. 🎵"Where" (0:39) if once her "whats" are answered, where will they walk and run? And in the end.. 🎵"Watch" (1:49) she wants him to watch as she will someday be part of his world. Just this reprise shows her as not just a dreamer but someone willing to put that dream into reality. It's something we should all strive to do as well. It's amazing and for sure worth it!🙏🎊✨️
Nothing to see here. Just a 17 year old listening to this on repeat, reenacting Ariel’s movements from memory, in the middle of the night, and crying from pure nostalgia
I’m embarassed that it took me this long to notice the rhyming scheme going on here. “What would I *give* to *live* where you are, what would I *pay* to *stay* here beside you what would I *do* to see *you* smiling at me”
This is definitely what I would want to play at the end of The Little Mermaid, if the movie had played along to the original story with Ariel turning into sea-foam. In the original demo of Alan Menken, the last lines of the song: "I'd give my life, I'd sell my soul, cause I feel that I'll never be whole, but I can see that I'll never be part of your world." sounds more like what I would imagine the song that would go with the movie with the original plotline. Ariel gives up her life, sells her soul(not literally, but figuratively), and acknowledges that she will never be part of the prince's world. She chooses to die rather than kill him. Oh Disney, the happy ending isn't satisfying enough...
I agree. I do love the Disney version but it doesn't feel as touching and beautiful as the original Hans Christian Andersen version, Disney kinda ruined the message
STOP! YOU ARE KILLING ME WITH THESE FACTS! Oh gosh. In a way, this fact almost makes Disney giving the happy ending better in itself, not in comparison. Given the queer history behind this song and the story of The Little Mermaid itself. Could this be one of the deepest underlying statements by Disney?! Telling us that love can be found for everyone, gay, straight, bi, pan (etc)?! Could you actually send me a link to this information?
It is indeed a well known fact that this tale was written by Hans Christian Anderson as a love letter to his friend. He was unable to be with him the way a mermaid cannot be with a human and indeed the ending in his novel was his way of showing that no matter the divide, he would always still love him. For me - that is a powerful message in of itself and whilst I agree that giving a happy ending does exemplify that anyone - gay, bi or straight can find happiness I think that the original message is all the more powerful - it speaks to the purest kind of love in putting yourself first before anyone else - even when that person hurts or neglects you - it's the kind of love which many people struggle to come to terms with in the real world every day and many people would look to be see represented and inspired by in media. I do agree it's a tough sell for Disney but it is indeed the message of the original story and I think if they are to do anything to honour the LGBT community then it would be to honour the intent of the author's original best intentions. Just my thoughts! :)
Ok, I know even the original story is supposed to be a tragically romantic story... BUT IMAGINE if instead Ariel was cursed as a child to remain in the sea away from her mother. Longing to be human once more and feel her mother's arms around her, one day she finally sees her mother walking along a beach. As the mother stares sadly out into the sea, Ariel sings this song with the determination to finally find a way to break her curse and be with her family once more. Changes the tone, doesn't it?
Or flip it and instead the song is sung from the mother's perspective, as she watches her daughter play on the beach as a small child. Then Ariel stops, looks out at her, smiles, and waves, then Triton calls her inside and she runs off. As she runs off, the mother sings the second part.
Patrick: She has the most beautiful voice I ever heard, Mr Krabs. Mr. Krabs: Yeah, she sure does, Patrick. I could see the mermaid does like the prince. SpongeBob: Yeah, me too.

PART OF YOUR WORLD!
A great example of a powerful alto final note
Even better, Sierra freakin’ Boggess is higher. And it ends on an Eb5 in the key of Eb Major
I love she said part of your world instead of part of that world
Still my favourite ❤
