Great tip been doing it like that for 20 plus years, I do place the spool of line in water while I load the spool, and keep tension with my fingers you get a little wet but you end up with a well loaded reel. Enjoy your videos
Because of the size difference in the spools, reel vs new line spool, you will get line twist if you keep spool label up. Just watch the loop coils as you're loading the reel. When you see the coils getting smaller just flip the spool. I do it with my feet. Just keep alternating the spool, label up and label down. Have done it this way for years and don't have a problem with line twist. I hope this helps someone. Great tip on the warm water. I never knew. Tight lines brothers.
Dude the line memory on my spinning reels has been driving me insane for YEARS, and until RUclips and social media came to pass I never had anyone around me to teach me how to load the reels correctly! Will be redoing all my reels today with your method plus leaving my spool in the warm water while reeling it on like a previous person suggested. Thanks a million for curing my years of anger and frustration!!!
Great. Just be aware that if you are reeling it up make sure if the line is twisting flip your spool over. I have learned since I made this video that the label up is not always true.
THANK YOU!!!! After taking many years off from fishing, mostly because everything I had was stolen so many years ago it disgusted me, I got back into with spinning reels last year. Towards the end of the year I was having some horrible line issues to which I would strip some line off and start over. I was raised on bait casters and wished I hadn’t picked up a spinning reel, but I did enjoy it a little more until the headaches started to remind me.
The part where you said “no matter what type of line it is, as long as you have the label pointed to the sky, it will come off the proper way” is entirely false. Depending on the manufacturer line is spooled in different directions. Although most are spooled the same, some are not, I’ve seen it. The key is that you want the line to come off counter clockwise.
@@stevestumbaugh8982 this clockwise tip is great but, clockwise on the reel looking from where? I just now see that it's looking from handle through reel to spool. Gotta go wind up a new reel.

Exactly Redline. Not all manufacturers are alike. Case in point I just spooled on some 6 lb trilene, the line is supposed to come off the Spool in the counterclockwise rotation, the label is facing towards my bed. The correct way of saying it is the line is supposed to come off counter-clockwise, nothing to do with the label. Mike Iaconelli and others will tell ya the same 😅
@@hardrockminer-50 Looking from the rod tip at the spool end of the reel. If the bail turns clockwise the line spool should lay on whichever end that has the line coming off counterclockwise.
I appreciate the detailed explanation. I have fished 30+ years with baitcast, Zebco's and fly reels. I recently bought a spinning reel and spooled it just as one would a baitcaster. Got to the lake and within 10 minutes I was cussing it due to twisted line. Now I'm going outside to get it from the building and re-spool it. Thanks.
Man I never knew about any of these tips. I haven't used spinning reels that much and the main reasons are because of the problems you've shown how to avoid here. Gonna have to give these a try. Thanks for sharing this information bro.
The problems dont exist. Just have the spool revolving on something. Seriously. These American spooling videos have become a bit of a meme in the tackle store I work in.
Got my first spinning reel, bought some line and had no idea as to what or how to put the line on. Thank you for your very informative video, I will be putting the line in a minute or two. Thank you!
Good video, I agree from experience if the line does not come off the spool with the same rotation as the reel it will tend to birdcage and you have a mess, especially if there is any slack on the cast. If you spool in the wrong direction then you can usually put a heavy weight on the line and cast as far as you can, then it tends to reel back on correctly.
I have, on multiple occasions, seen supply spools (what you buy at the store when you get fishing line) loaded backwards. Most of them seemed to be large spools, like what is used by tackle shops. So, always check the direction the line is coming off the spool. Usually, you'll want the label facing up. But, not always. I think a lot of spools used by tackle shops are loaded differently, but I don't know why.
I wouldnt go by labels, just make sure it comes of ccw. I like to throw my spool in a container of hot water and spool it that way. Dont need anyone to hold it or worry about line twist.
I get a piece of wood with a nail in it, put the spool on the nail laying on the floor. Thread the line through all the eyes. When I'm reeling I lay a book on the line and reel it in naturally and never had a problem.
That's not a bad idea. I usually just have my gf or cousin or someone stick a pencil through and put tension on the line spool in-between there fingers. then reel it in normal. Then depending if they need to or not have them add or release tension on how tight theyre squeezing the line spool
i have seen so many vids on how they think a proper spooling should be done and no way to tell what is the correct method, but a thought came to mind that i can spool line on my reel any way and then when im done simply get a large bearing snap swivel and attach my line to it and use the snap to attach it to a fence and then start walking back and unspooling it all the way ,then slowly put a bit of tension on the whole length of line and let go a few time then start spooling it all back on, i believe this helps stretch the memory out and the bearing swivel removes any twist on the entire line so that the whole length of it is straight without twist before you start reeling it in, and after that you can always dunk the spool in hot water and leave it till it cools down or leave it in there for a few days which helps to remove memory and like you said shape it to that diameter,, let me know what you think about using the snap swivel like that
@@MidwestBassHunter correct get one expensive high quality ball bearing snap swivel and even spray some wd40 or oil it up to help even more , this is also why i say to put tension and release a few times to help it remove any twists ,doing this intermittently while reeling the line
Dont depend on the spool label to be on the same side of the spool for all lines. Pay attention so the line comes off of the spool the same direction that it will be loaded onto your reel. The Hot Water trick will help set your line to the smaller spool of your reel.
Yes, once in a while they mess up on this! Also, if I see a twist set in, I will flip the spool for a few turns to reverse it. The line spool is a bigger diameter than your reel so a little twist can set in. The hot water trick is a good one that I will try - will reduce birds nests from line coming off the reel by itself.
Awesome idea about line memory brother.. I always get that line flap where the line comes off in huge circles and always causes twist ect... Love your VIDEOS
if you have a boat, you can put it on any way it comes off the spool. All you have to do is let the line off the reel out behind the boat with nothen tied to it as you idle. Let pretty much all the line out and drag it behind the boat for a couple minutes and then reel it back on. The line will be completely straight no twist what so ever. Its good to do this every so often and you will never have trouble with twist.
Hello! your tutorial helped me solve the problem, very easy and practice , thank you so much , greetings from Chile . Pd. the color reel is very elegant .
Hey man, thanks for helping get me started up with my rods this season. I love the way you explain things. So simple and straight up. You made me laugh a lot with the funny was you say things! Anyway, have a great fishing season and good luck out there!
All I could think of when watching this video was when we bought the new reel for one of the kids and had the shop put it on. Then having to walk ALL the line out so we could reel it up correctly. Fun times.
I’ve even soaked the spool of line before putting it on the reel, just to make it go on the reel a bit easier. Great video though dude, I’ll have to try spoiling my next spinning straight from the spool.
Good video but lable up doesn't always work I've had the line come off the backside of the spool always check and make sure which way the line comes off
Actually I used an old reel and spoiled it up with a towel. Then I hooked up the end to the actual reel which is the final destination to this line, set up brake on the old reel, this way when I roll it up, it will be the perfect tightness along the whole line.
The line should be coming off the spool in the same direction your reel spins! I’ve had line that cane off counter clock wise, so I had to lay the spool down upside down bc my reel spins clock wise
Label up doesn’t always work. Some companies coil counter clockwise and some coil clockwise. And there are occasions that you could get a spool from the same brand weight and all and the sticker is on the wrong side.
Good luck, if you have the spool label up make sure the line is coming off the spool counter clockwise, if its not just flip it over. Thanks for watching!
Curious if it wouldn't be better to do the stretch task prior to the warm water normalization. Wouldn't the stretch task negatively affect the 'curl' diameter you just created? I appreciate what I just learned from your video and will be using your recommendations, this afternoon in fact. Thanks for taking the time to record and post.
Good timing on this video. I bought a brand new spool for this year and it has the worst memory I've ever had. To make matters worse, I'm going down to a 1000 size reel this year so the spool size is even smaller. I just respooled it and I'm trying the warm water trick. We'll see how it goes...
Hmmm... I wonder if you did something differently. I use this method all the time and have really good results. The warms water definitely helps a lot though.
Even tension is best done with another reel . Set it up so that your line goes from the spool , takes three turns around the slave reel then onto the reel you want to load . Line every thing up and set the drag on the slave reel so when the line is loading onto the reel you want to fill it's a perfect even tension . Set the tension correctly and it stretches the line while you're at it ..no water , no stretching required later , job done in one hit .
the line always come off counter that what the reel does . I have a President reel and it turns clockwise if you extent it to the spool it should come off the line spool Counter Clockwise. eliminating line, memory . if done right you won`t need to put your spool in a glass of water
So I just wasted my time watching this because I thought I was spoiling my line wrong I've been doing it this way for years but that being said thanks for sharing
Didn’t some places use line filler first so that you’d put about 140yrds of Strenn vs 200 yards. I almost always fish from shore so 200 yards is a lot of line. I’m talking back in the 70-80s which is the last time I had my local tackle shop put line on for me. The filler was put on first then the line.
I'm not sure about that as I was born in the 80's but backing line is definitely used with braid and sometimes flourocarbon line to save money. With monofilament it's pretty cheap so no need to use backing in my opinion.
I have a spinning reel and baitcaster, I like that tip, going to use it. I have a question, if I use braided line on spinning reel, do I need to put spool in water like you did the mono?
Actually I would find a football field or something and walk it all off in a straight line, tie a swivel to the end and a leader to the swivel, have someone hold the lead and reel them in while running the line through your fingers, that should get most of the twist out.
What size president reel is that. That looks like the size I want for a new ultralight (light duty) and have heard great things about that model. Also cool hot water trick I'll have to try that next time I use non braided line.
Would personaly rather fish Shakespeare $.99 filler spool line that Wal-Mart and K-Mart sold years ago, than Stren. Fished Stren for a few years, lost too many fish from broken knots so I switched to Trilene XL. Went to Tulsa Rod and Boat show many years ago and there were booths for both Stren and Trilene. Asked Trilene Rep if I could have 12" of 14# test. Walked it over to Stren booth and the guy was doing a demo, he had tied on 20# Stren with a Palomar knot to his testing machine. It broke (at the knot) at 21.2# (1.2# over, not bad). I tied an improved clinch in the Teilene 14# and asked him to string it on the machine. It broke (in the line) at 17.6# (3.6# over). Told him that should prove two things, Trilene line holds up better, and so does an inproved clinch. Many other angles have a different opinion, and I respect that. I can only speak to my personal experiences over 50+ years of angling.
No matter what i do to my spinning reel line wise it always tangles up on me when using top waters, zara spooks, poppers, etc. I resort to my bait caster now for topwater and do not have that issue. Probably not related to this topic but any advice on how to top water with spinning equiptment and not get knots and tangles? Sometimes i use a steel leader when fishing them. Thanks.
I have experienced issues when reeling slack line on a spinning reel, when you use walking baits or poppers you tend to reel slack line. I usually use a baitcaster for these baits. What you can do is every 5 or 10 casts make a bomb cast and just burn it in without working the bait, that will get your line tight on the spool again. Good luck!
With a fresh spool of line I have always put some decent amount of weight and launched it far as I could get it across the lake then reel it in do that as many times as u want till you feel it's all good for a regular cast to start using baits
Good video with one or two exceptions. So, a possibly stupid question from a 50+ year Bass/Crappie angler who uses spinning and baitcasting gear on an almost equal basis. If you used the warm water to "Reset" the line memory from the larger diameter of the filler spool to the smaller diameter of the reel spool, why the last tip of stretching the line? And is that stretching of the line merely the last 12", or a longer or shorter distance? What purpose does stretching that segment of the line serve, unless you feel that it helps when tying on a lure or terminal tackle. Either way, it should be stated, because if it assists in tying on, shouldn't you mentiion that this is recommended before all reties as well? and wouldn't you cut that section off to remove the kink made by the line holder on the spool? I always do, anyway. One other point, the label pointing up has not always proven to work for this veteran fisherman, for some reason I have found that the label down works as well because it is not the label that matters, but the rotation that the line is flowing off of the filler spool and onto the reel spool. No matter which way the label faces, the line MUST uncoil counter-clockwise (right to left in front of the reel) if the line goes on the reel counter-clockwise (right to left viewed from behind the reel), and clockwise off the filler spool if clockwise on to the reel spool. Case in point, my Mitchell 300 winds line on with a clockwise rotation (viewed from behind), and my Okuma AV40 winds line on with a counter- clockwise rotation. If the "spool label UP" were set in stone, then many angler's reels would be spooled backward, or would be if they proceeded to spool on the loops and twists onto the reel while simultaneously cussing the proceedure. I seem to recall a couple of Tsunami spinning reels I had in the past which loaded clockwise also, maybe not, been a lot of years ago. But I still have my 300 here now, and if I loaded it as you stated, I'd prolly be cussing you as well as the reel. But fortunately I go by the rule I learned many years ago, "Off the filler spool in the same direction as on to the reel spool", and even that doesn't relieve 100% of line twist, but it's a heck of a lot better. Spinning reels "create" twist naturally. This is inherent because the line (under load from retreiving lures and landing fish) cannot turn 100% freely, even when a swivel is used, and most anglers tie directly to the the tackle or at best to a snap or split ring (I use a Duo-Loc snap most of the time myself). Even the minimal "load" or "drag" created by a lure will cause a small amount of line twist because the line is not spooled in parallel, but rather at 90° which causes an opposing rotation by the bail, and thusly some amount of "twist" is the result. There is currently no way around that fact. But if you can figure that one out, you're sure to be a rich person.
The warm water and the “stretching of the line are both helpful in reducing line memory. The stretching is just for that. As far as the label up or down, you are correct. I had always done it label up and it always was the correct direction, I have found some that are not spooled that way though since.
I am newer Fisher and I thought about going to the bait shop but I was embarrassed they might laugh at me if I asked to to show me how to put a line on spinning reel.
Hi. I just got a new Shimano FX1000 ultralight. I got 10lb and 12lb fishing line for my Ugly Stick GX2. Does it really make a difference if I use thicker fishing line on an ultralight? I'm still going to buy some 6lb line for it but I was wondering.. If you were stranded on an island and all you had were ultralight fishing poles and 12lb line, I feel like it would still work. I'm going to buy the 6lb line tomorrow.
It will definitely make a difference. That setup will not cast and function as well with that heavier line. That being said if I was stranded on an island I would use whatever I could get ahold of.
If you line gets twist after fishing awhile cut bait off and as you idle boat let line out behind you. In half mile it will take all twist out of line. Works every time.
The way I do it it don`t matter how the line comes off the filler spool I soak the filler spool first a few times in warm water before it is put on the reel spool all so use a warm wet cloth as back up to get the line on tight , that way it gets the reel spool memory as it is going on
hmm my post has a gear and a plastic washer on top of it but no metal washer and ball bearing like yours,is this normal for some designs? says i got 8 ball bearings,i see yours is 10
@@MidwestBassHunter yeah but its still technically a gear with teeth and the ratchet with the spring(on the inner part of the spool) clicks on it,,like you said the drag system

That might be a great idea!
Good timing on this video. I bought a brand new spool for this year and it has the worst memory I've ever had. To make matters worse, I'm going down to a 1000 size reel this year so the spool size is even smaller. I just respooled it and I'm trying the warm water trick. We'll see how it goes...
Good luck
I'll have to try that warm water trick, I tried spooling on like how you did last time I put line but it didn't work so well.
Hmmm... I wonder if you did something differently. I use this method all the time and have really good results. The warms water definitely helps a lot though.
That water trick is game changer
Yes it is
Hair dryer. Usually solves my issue. I use nothing but mono.
Very nicely explained by you thank you dude. Myself from INDIA. Informative video Good.
Glad I could help! 👍
Interesting 🤔
Very good idea
My dad taught me that trick never had a problem with line twist
Nice!
The water trick works great!
Yeah, it helps a lot!
Very helpful! Just picked up a ugly stick and need to spool it. Is braided line okay on a bale real???
Yes it is. You will want to use a small piece of tape over your know on your spool though, otherwise braided line can slip.
the line always come off counter that what the reel does . I have a President reel and it turns clockwise if you extent it to the spool it should come off the line spool Counter Clockwise. eliminating line, memory . if done right you won`t need to put your spool in a glass of water
Sometimes the best solution is the simple one. I did one last week with the pencil and it was a nightmare!!!!
I am going to reload all my rods today.
I switched to braid to completely avoid this issue.
Yeah no twist with braid
Awesome 1st video I've seen where someone did it RIGHT YAY
Thanks for watching
Lucky me I got to finally learn right way to correctly line my spinning reel !! It actually works !! No BS
So I just wasted my time watching this because I thought I was spoiling my line wrong I've been doing it this way for years but that being said thanks for sharing
Anytime
No need on the braid
@@MidwestBassHunter Thanks
I highly recommend KVD line conditioner also works like a charm.
I've never tried it but heard good things about it, I'll check it out.
Lot of charm out here today.
Yup. The warm water truck was worth the watch. Thanks bud!
It works good!
Super! Just what can i do if i put my line wrong direction? Spin it to another reel?
Actually I would find a football field or something and walk it all off in a straight line, tie a swivel to the end and a leader to the swivel, have someone hold the lead and reel them in while running the line through your fingers, that should get most of the twist out.
@@MidwestBassHunter Thank you! 😊
Last tip is a good one
What size president reel is that. That looks like the size I want for a new ultralight (light duty) and have heard great things about that model. Also cool hot water trick I'll have to try that next time I use non braided line.
Size 25. Great reel. Thanks for watching!
Really works thanks ur the best.
👍👍👍
I used a figure 8 knot at end of line to let slip knot stop. Hope it holds on braided line.
I have never used that knot so I don’t know 🤷🏻♂️
@@MidwestBassHunter so far so good.
Thanks for this video, now i know why my line get tangled, specially on my spinning reel.
Glad I can help
@@MidwestBassHunter I just got now my baitcaster online, thanks again for the tutorial, it is very clear explanation. Now i will try it this week. :D
Awesome
Great lesson. Understandable common sense.
Thanks
Stren and Trilene are the two best monofiliment still
I have to agree with you, lot's of folks say Sten and Berkley lines are junk, BS, they are good lines and priced reasonably.
Thank you!! very easy instructions, AND IT WORKED!!
Great
Label up like my dad taught me 🤙
No matter what i do to my spinning reel line wise it always tangles up on me when using top waters, zara spooks, poppers, etc.
Very good tips.Nice video with good explanation.Keep the good work
👍
Very useful and helpful thanks for sharing
Stren and Pflueger same setup I have except i have the president xt
I use this for trout fishing and finesse bass fishing, great setup.
Just watched your video again. Quick question, how long would you suggest the spool be left in the water?.
I do about five minutes
@@MidwestBassHunter Cheers.
Who plays the music at the beginning ?
Thanks for the info. Cinti Kid
👍
Great tips! The warm water helps alot for sure!
Thanks Double Down!
I am newer Fisher and I thought about going to the bait shop but I was embarrassed they might laugh at me if I asked to to show me how to put a line on spinning reel.
First of all who cares if they laugh at you, but yeah lots of places will put line on for you.
Good tip
Nice
Watching from New Delhi India
Parveen Lyall thanks! That’s a long ways away. What do you fish for over there?
The way I do it it don`t matter how the line comes off the filler spool
I soak the filler spool first a few times in warm water before it is put on the reel spool all so use a warm wet cloth as back up to get the line on tight , that way it gets the reel spool memory as it is going on
👍
Soaking in water makes your gasket weak and affect the drag later on. Try to open your spool and you'll see what i mean.
Yeah, you can take that out.
Simple like I needed. Thank you
Glad I could help
'..and have my wife .. to hold on to the spool..', well, good luck with that!
My wife always helps, with a little begging it’s no problem…
So smart man! I hate when I get line twist on spinning reels 😂
This works great my man!
dont just do label up that's crazy line has to go off the same way as your spool turns
As long as the line comes off the spool counter clockwise you are good to go.
Awesome stuff! I’ll remember to do the water trick!
It's crazy that it works but it does!
Makes total sense! Appreciate it!
Should you put the spool in warm water if you are using braided line?
No need, braid doesn’t have memory
Is that a pflueger reel? How much line can it hold. I think I have 12 lb and 14lb mono. Mostly going after bass and pike
It is a Pfluger reel, if you are putting that big of line on it, use a 3000 or 4000 size reel. You’ll get 100-150 yards of line or more on it.
I put my new line in a bucket of warm water then start to reel the line on my reel have never had any problems with line twist.
Awesome
Viewer: watches a video on how to spool a spinning reel
This youtuber: if you cant see the knot i tie search it on youtube
Good point I should’ve shown the knot. It’s hard to properly video record a knot.
What rod is that? It looks like a color sage has that I love!!!
Fenwick Eagle
@@MidwestBassHunter love that green
hmm my post has a gear and a plastic washer on top of it but no metal washer and ball bearing like yours,is this normal for some designs? says i got 8 ball bearings,i see yours is 10
Yeah that’s normal and that’s not a gear it part of the clicker that you hear when a fish pulls drag.
@@MidwestBassHunter yeah but its still technically a gear with teeth and the ratchet with the spring(on the inner part of the spool) clicks on it,,like you said the drag system
Thanks man helped out a lot
Thanks u made it clear and simple
👍
Yep that's how I started spoiling my line since I was a kid using a towel
Thanks for the video. Wouldn't you know it.......first time I tried this, the spool of line (PLine CX) came off clockwise, not counterclockwise. Since I'm using the same Pfleuger reel as in the video, I assume all I have to do is place the spool with label DOWN, not up. Correct?
Correct
Midwest Bass Hunter No, label facing up with line coming off the filler spool in counter clockwise direction.
@@GLOCKCOPG23 Label facing up is not always correct ... but coming off counter clockwise is always correct. Not all manufacturers have the line coming off counter clockwise when the label is facing up.
@@adammckenzie605 No fail method. Spool the line any way. Take rod and reel out on your boat. Let the line out while running at good speed. No weight or lure, just bare line. Now reel it in. It will lie flat on spool. This works if line kinks up after you fish with a spinner that twists up the line
