I've always enjoyed the Transonninental range, The colours and variety attracted me as a child and still do. It was a great range and to us kids of the 60's lights on loco's was a great time.

I never tire of the look of the TC coaches and wagons. The 'diesel sound' loco certainly doesn't sound like any diesel loco I have ever heard so I am not surprised that it wasn't on the market for very long. Interesting though. Just came across your video on the Tri-ang Railway models. I still have mine from when I was 9 years old back in the late 50's. Its been in a large box in my storage locker ever since the late 70's. At that time, I had quit an extensive layout, but it got somewhat abused by my nephew and his friends in the 70's. Seeing your videos has brought back fond memories.

Coal fired houses are always warmer, especially if the chimneys go up the middle, central heating before "central heating"

Great video,. The yellow stock car has the early TR badge. They are a bit wider. I have the later Caboose with shorter steps. It's made in Australia and has yellow writing.
Interesting ere never my favourite, but still fascinating I hope you get better Oscar . I love the background music..

Re R.55 Single ended loco wit two motors, I would be tempted to take the x04 type motor out, and save it for a spare one for use in another loco.
Lovely to see these american outline triang trains they used to be the unloved triang range and I can remember into the 90s that shops couldn't even give them away second hand the coaches would sell for no more than 1-2 pounds! Nice to see finally that they are being appreciated

Hi Oscar, fascinating to see the two motor in action. The idea was proposed by Bob Symes Schutzmann I think to make the loco less on/off as the non driving motor has to power up first before it releases enough electricity to slowly power up the driving motor. The “diesel” noise is a bi product as is the reduced pulling power. A lovely model the single ended diesel designed by the late Jim Hoyland who used to be a member of the Wimbledon Model Railway club.

Wow Oscar, what a noisy contraption that twin motor TC Diesel is! Fab to see these early models especially the bogie tank wagon, it is a lovely colour isn't it?
I remember the later TC models being sold off at bargain prices in the early 80s
at Zodiac Toys in Doncaster Arndale Centre.

Greetings again! Having a pair of these peculiar models I tend to wonder how this concept ever received production approval! At about the same time Tri-ang was playing with the concept of making a passenger coach whose doors would automatically open when stopped at a station. A prototype using arms and levers was created, but the whole thing was so complicated the idea was abandoned. Sanity prevailed!

That is only the second 2 motored R.55 I have ever seen. The first one crossed my work bench as a repair request. It seemed to me to be a waste of a motor but of course I would like to own one now. Lovely other items too. The bogies on the orange box car and caboose, along with the wide steps, are rare in my experience too. I have an old battered acetate body for the TC Pacific and I am now wondering if it has the molded cow catcher. Something else for me to dig out. Stay warm, Regards, David.
Good morning David, it's definitely an interesting variation of the R.55 but not a very practical one in use, imagine quite expensive at the time as well. It will be great to know which version of the TC pacific body you have? the cowcatcher is very fragile I don't think they lasted very long at playtime! I'm always terrified of running it into something.

I have examples of R.199 "Yard" (1 metre, actually) straight tracks, in both 1958 - 1961 fibre sleeper base & 1962 - 1965 plastic sleeper base. The plastic base track uses 5 x standard straight sleeper bases held together by metal crimps. These same metal crimps were also used to hold together the sleeper bases on the Super 4 extra long straight.
Triang Railways kept Series 3 track in production, alongside Super 4 track, until 1965.

Thanks Oscar, I've often wondered what the extra motor sounded like in that version, you have to think why they didn't just have two actual power bogies, easier in the double ended diesel I supose, but quite a quirky idea, you'd regret buying your kids one of those for Christmas! I have a couple of sections of the fibre base yard lengths, I don't think many survived, I had one as a kid and it fell apart over time, I will use them at some point.
Two power bogies on the R55 would take a major modification to the chassis possibly explaining why I have never seen one.
However you are correct about the R.159 Double Ended diesels. With these it is super easy for two power bogies to be installed on the R159 Blue and yellow double ended diesels.
Oscars earlier tear down of the R159 will show the exact same mounting holes for the bogie at the unpowered end.
The lighting wires provide extended pickup from both ends when this is done. Giving much better pickup and so quality of running over pointwork.
With suitable heavy weight in the fuel tank and two power bogies the R159 is transformed into the most powerful Triang loco by far.
I have been shown this modification being done at an Australian exhibition as far back as 1963 as a child.
Was a very common conversion in Australia in previous years by enthusiasts to get an easy approximation of a Victorian Railways B class pulling trains of the length a B class would in use.
Hope Oscar explores this option, but these days two power bogies in good matched condition are hard to find.

Oscar, your videos are an education. Despite being exactly the right age for it, I've never seen, or even heard of the fibre track. Same goes for the double motor diesel; what a bizarre concept. I strongly suspect that parents buying that for little Johnny's Christmas, will soon have exactly the same feelings of regret as if they'd bought him a drum kit; what a racket! I always craved the double ended diesel because it looked so exotic, but my dad was in charge so we stayed resolutely British.

You might be interested to know that I bought another red and silver R.55, which was delivered today, and when I removed the body to clean and service the motor I was very, very surprised to find that it is one of those 2 motor jobs that you featured in this video .... and it performs exactly as yours does.
By the way, I came across your videos by accident about a year ago and you inspired me to re-start my Tri-ang collection which sadly (foolishly?) I sold in my teens in around 1971. I was given an RS. 35 "Indian Freighter" set for my 9th birthday and buying another "Hiawatha" (I now also have a "Geronimo", "Tecumseh" and "Metacomet" thanks to some excellent Retrodecals) and re-acquiring the same rolling stock as in that first set kicked-off my new collection, which is based around the Transcontinental series (plus a Stephenson's Rocket because it was far too cute to ignore ...... and an Electra and a Britannia because I had always wanted them as a child!).

What you could do is get some Humbrol clear product and apply some over the decals and lettering to protect them or I think you can possibly get replacements
The Yard Lengths were probably made by Wrenn for Triang ( Wren were manufacturers of OO Gauge Fibre based track)

Thanks for doing these films. I have the Triang Railway marked loco with a centre engine (B unit) and a dummy cabbed just in grey which I got when I was about 6 so that would have been in 1965. From what you are saying probably out of production? My cow catcher broke I am hoping to find one at Doncaster on the 30th at the toy fair. I never had any coaches but have acquired a few now. The stock car was also reused for the POW wagon in Battle Space I think. That two motor loco was clever but I suspect a bit hefty on current use!
Also modified to make the Giraffe car and later Battle Space Sniper car, as I now hear Oscar explaining as I write this,

Thanks Oscar, I'd been wondering what the "Diesel Noise" announcement in the catalogue meant, and I think you did explain it a while back so it's good to see it for real. How wonderfully "Heath Robinson" the people at Triang could be! I have a couple of those yard lengths too (in much worse condition, but still in use) and didn't realise they were the Triang version. Some vaguely similar ones I have, have additional studs to fit a third centre rail, but at the same height as the running rails.

Those long lengths of track you have with studs for a 3rd rail sound fascinating. Somebody else in the comments has mentioned that Wrenn produced quite a bit of track work with fibre bases at around the same period Tri-ang marketed these yard lengths.

had loads of fun playing with that red and silver set with the old grey track , was given to my friend by the son of a british rail driver that drove the electric locos from longsight i learned recently he passed away scary as he was the next generation above us was nice to hear he had been working as a paramedic though a great achievement from the area we were from

Oscar. another relaxing start to Sunday morning. As a 7 year old in 1967, transcontinental always presented a dilemma of sorts. Although the models were enjoyable to watch on the layout, the strange shapes and colours were totally unknown,
plus of course the idea that railways could even exist beyound the UK.
Reading the servicing manual booklets supplied with the sets soon revealed a world beyond London N8 both in UK and abroad.
In later life, visits to some of the overseas dealers was possible as well as noting the former site of the Triang works in Durban and Auckland was fascinating.

The twin motor's in VGC as of Boxing day it turned up missing! Much to "little Jonnies" dismay! "Quite an entertaining noise" as no parent ever said after a minute! Possible a few choice words added to "Racket!" though, happy days🤣🤣 The cream station "complex" looks the part👍👍

That second motor is interesting, I wonder what generates the diesel noise even with the body shell off and no gear wheel to mesh to - maybe resonance from the chassis ? 60 years later these models are still intriguing ! Thanks again.
I've given that noise maker some thought. Firstly, the entire assembly is on a separate plate, center mounted on two posts. Therefore, IF the plate can be made to resonate, it will generate noise. But an electric motor is usually very well balanced. The trick, I believe, is in the odd coils of wire around the plate next to the motor. Coils create magnetic fields, and the plate extends that field under the motor. Instead of a balanced system, as the magnetic lobes of the coils in the motor pass the magnetic field in the plate, it is alternately attracted and repelled. This sets the plate into resonance, (the important bit) making noise proportional to the velocity!

Great video of a selection from the TC range. The extra motor is a bit different to say the least, surely it has to be a rare item. I was wondering about the condition of the series 3 track as I have not come across the fibre based yard lengths before.
It is interesting to reflect on Triang’s sales strategy in the 50s and early 60s. To see the TC range as a seller here was forward thinking and the amount of background research required to get it right was, without doubt, a huge undertaking.

Good morning Gordon definitely an interesting take on creating diesel sound in the model locomotive. I don't think the TC range ultimately had the following it should have here in the UK and seems to have been largely phased out of the catalogue by the mid-60s.

Wish they would do a none flexible yard leanth track
Being flexible, the yard length with the shorter rail may have been used as a curve hence why one rail would be a bit shorter than the other. I guess the "yard lenghts" were designed to be flexible track, trimmed to size for larger layouts. I wonder how many of them are left in their full length like most of the ones you have.... I doubt there would be that much left in original condition now.
That loco with the diesel sound is an interesting design. It looks to have a small coil of nichrome wire, like old kettles used, to act as a resistance to the drive motor. I'd say that is so the noise will fire up before the drive, but it sounds like the noise generator motor may have bad bearings, which could be why sometimes the drive actually kicks in first. An interesting attempt at sound enabled locos long before DCC was around, but I should imagine it added a considerable amount to the cost at the time.

Real diesel sound they say, well it was noisy for sure and certainly interesting to see. I think in that case I would probably remove the second motor and put it to better use or keep as a spare, it just seems such a waste if a good X04.
You possibly solved a bit of a mystery for me as well as I have three lengths of that yard length track but it has no marking on it so I didn't know what its origins where, though I thought possibly Wrenn. Mine is in much poorer shape as the fibre base is badly warped, interesting to see it may be Tri-ang.
Good morning possibly not the best solution for replicating a diesel sound! but makes for an interesting item in a collection. Great to hear you have examples of fibre-based track, others in the comments have mentioned that Wrenn also made this at about the same time as these yard lengths were marketed by Tri-ang, again possibly not a great solution due stability of the fibre base over time.

The fibre based track may well have been for export, possibly by Wrenn as it close to a metre in length (1 metre = 39.37 inches). It is not really flexible!

My advice (from experience when this track was first available) is...
Don't try to bend the fiber based track, as it is never the same after bending? Keep it pristine for long straight runs..
I had bought one of the R 55s with "Diesel sound" years ago, but sold it to a collector.. I must admit that I didn't miss it.. I thought it was under powered, (and I did not really like the sound either)...
Your other R 55 is doing a great job to pull the four coaches 'and' the "Dummy"? I usually run two locos and include a "B" unit... It needs two locos to haul the full train with open axle boxes on the coaches.. The later plastic versions of these bogies still had open axle boxes on the ones that I have? Pin point axles might have been nice, but I don't think these particular coaches ever got that upgrade?
Great to see the old T.C. range.. They were my favourites..
P.S. Don't forget the little rings (cut from drinking straws) slipped over the coupler bars to hold the old Mk. 2 couplers from coming apart accidentally while running .. They give you a 'permanently coupled' train with no modifications made to anything)..

Good morning Robin, I think you're right I'll be keeping those lengths of track straight. How do you say not much of a diesel sound I'm pretty underpowered but an interesting item. I wish I'd thought a little rings from drinking straws a few days ago! Just been playing with an early-ish acetate 4-6-4 Baltic tank and a rake 1st series of silver TC coaches , they are a heavy load! despite the couplings been nicely aligned they do tend to separate periodically. Not the coaches from each other but the locomotive from the coaches. I still have them on the layout and will make the modification in the next day or two when I have time. It will make a great follow up in the next video. Thank you again for watching and the terrific information.

The T.C diesel wit the sound motor was available in a catalogue set as well as separately. We had one running at a show a few years ago and a man who worked for them recognised it. Have you lubricated the metal freight car trucks, I use a ptfe based oil that does not attack the plastic wheels, as a result my 4-6-4T changed from struggling with 4 cars to romping round with 7 while the 2 motor diesel managed 2 dummy locos + 5 passenger cars.

Hi Oscar ,, well you teach me something new every day.
I never new they did that to the tc locos like you showed.
I was just about to make a comment of how it sounded like the worm gear was worn on both ends of the drive shaffts or the both worm gear and crown wheel drive but then you showed the x04 motor at the end of it fitted as the diesel noise well , umm , well they were more than like likely a gimmick in there day or may of figured that they could make a x04 motor for a dollar or 2 and add 15 dollars to the engine to make it try to sound like a diesel engine.
You said it would not pull the all of the passenger cars , well it may be because the x04 motor is taking a fair whack of power out of the driving wheels in the loco.
Them pin type push in connectors for the engine light are a big pain in the butt and iv found myself that the only way to keep the light going strong (& stay going) is to use some sandpaper around the pins and the wire and the globe wire (as delicate as they are) and use a watch makers file to scratch up the inside of the hole where the pin goes in to keep it in place this way its got full current going through the globe the pin as well.
Anyhoo its near 2.30.am and im off ta bed.

how do you get the heavy tarnish off the track when restoring it please oscar?
Most of the track is dismantled track beds carfully removed and cleaned warm soapy water if very dirty and I've found furniture polish spray (pledge) the aerosol type is better than the non-aerosol type! with a toothbrush is very good at reviving the track beds if they are not too dirty. Some Rail sections clean up quite nicely with light with a cotton cloth are the rails other that are more stubborn can be cleaned with those Scotch-Brite type pads which are available from the supermarket for washing up, use rotary tool with fine wire brush to clean up the fish plates/Rail joiners if in very bad condition, or just a fibreglass pen if they just lightly tarnished. I also use of Peco track rubber and the slightly rubbery Hornby track rubber. Put these are just for a light clean once the truck is installed every now and then.
