- Out of all the Disney Star Wars movies and TV shows to come out over the past ten years, virtually all of them have featured a female protagonist, and it's not showing any signs of slowing down.
Who'd have thought that hiring a "story group" predominantly composed of middle aged women, many of whom have never watched Star Wars let alone care about it would end so badly

Christopher Nolan wasn't a Batman fan but his movies didn't turn out to be shit. So it's not about not being a fan. They are just untalented and unprofessional. They only care about themselves so instead of researching the story to see what made it so beloved, they watch those films with a massive chip on their shoulder.

Ursula is the opposite of Ariel. Ariel, who has useful optimism and that carries on to how she loves. While Ursula, may have started out as a version of Ariel, but has been say; less fortunate in her life which results in her being evil. I can have some empathy towards Ursula if life didn’t treat her well, but it doesn’t excuse her actions towards Ariel. And for someone who sees themselves as Ursula has some “splanning” to do, because relating I can understand.

I watched Lord of the Rings as a kid, and i never said to myslef "These orcs are like those Indians in local Satyam", hell i barely identified someone with different race(Unless it was black guy, in which case it was obvious). When i watched Star Wars as a kid, i loved Chewbacca and Han, even tho Chewy looks like local Rabi's dog, and speaks like a bear on submarine, i never thought them like someone with a sexuality.

As a woman, what drew me to Star Wars and Comic Book media when I was in my teens was definitely the attractive men being heroic, and I can feel the pandering that’s happening in the media now. It’s sad because they already had me as a fan, but trying to appeal to me directly has driven me away.
The way how they accomplish pandering is absurd too. Instead of creating compelling stories like Luke's journey from a victim to a hero --- with Rey we just get someone who is perfect from the outset. Where is the character development? There are villains with less screen time in many movies who have more character development than these.. modern SW characters.
Im black and they do the same in regards to my background, etc. Just tell a story I dont need race swapped heroes, etc.

It's not that people dislike female protagonists. It's that these companies (namely Disney) hire unlikeable (usually misandrist) female writers (and actresses, oftentimes) who write unlikeable female characters, because all they've ever thought about is themself.

The key point is orientation towards the crowds/outsiders. Are they customers you have to sway and convince to buy/watch your product? The point Rippa made about it all being posturing in front of their peers is what drives every aspect of media today.
News media, entertainment, educational, everything.
We live in an era where the audience is viewed as an adversary.
A career in media is much more secure if you keep in the good graces of your peers. You can survive having no audience, you can’t survive being shut out of the network.
The funny thing about the whole “market to girls and the boys will follow” thing is that the exact opposite happened when I was a kid in the 90s. I loved things like Ninja Turtles, Power Rangers, Star Wars, video games, etc. There were girl-centric things I liked as well, but the action-y stuff that was primarily for boys was a lot of fun.
Contrary to what the perpetual-victim class says, I was never bullied by the boys for liking the same things they did. I was never “gate-kept” by the boys. They were THRILLED that I wanted to enjoy those things with them. It was the girls who treated me like a weirdo for liking the stuff the boys did. And if girls decide to bully you, it’s psychological warfare on a scale that would make most dictators blush.
So, yeah - not a fan of this trend of turning “boy” franchises into crappy feminized versions of the same. Whatever it is that made those franchises appeal to boys is what I found appealing about it. Stop making it girly. Or gender neutral. Just leave it the way it was.

It's weird though, when I was a kid I didn't have such a perception that some things were for boys and others for girls. Sure, I loved TMNT and Batman and whatnot, but I never thought about things in terms of gender. My mom was babysitting some girls in the neighborhood and we had all sorts of toys, I played dressing Barbies too, the girls had fun with my Batman action figures, we played with legos and the SNES... it's was just... stuff to have fun with. I really think the emphasis on gender and identity has hit insanity nowadays. Brainwashing the kids with gender stereotypes to then deconstruct them as an attempt to unshackle this generation from standards they've had no concept of in the first place is super strange to me.
My daughter loved Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles and her toys did little pizza eating or tea partying. They sure kicked butt a lot though. She is and always was girly girly but tuff as nails.

Starting from your own parents grasping to the image of nice and convenient kid that can be demonstrated as a token of personal achievments, and all the way to neighbours', classmates' and whatever-grownups-around who fear that their own child may go off the hill the same way and god forbid became inconvenient!

It’s not that the idea of having female characters is bad for Star Wars, it’s the fact they have zero faults and show up older established characters in order to prop them up as the “bestest eveeeeeer”. That’s what makes Rey and the countless other females characters completely boring and uninteresting.
The biggest mistake they made was getting rid of the EU and they had a perfect female character ready in waiting.. Mara Jade.
Yeah to be clear, they aren't saying that disney is writing stories with females therefore they'll be shit, it's that when you obsess over putting as many girls and queer and whatever else into your stories, over first of all trying to write a good stories that can have males or females at the center, chances are you'll be writing shit, simply as a matter of track record and in terms of the incentives you have as a writer. If you write stories in order to prop up a gender or a sexuality or something of that nature, you're much more likely to ruin the character that has those traits by making them basically a power fantasy, than if you don't.
Mara Jade could have been the next massive character (or money maker) for Disney. But K Kennedy couldn't self insert into her so we got nothing.
I'm actually shocked they haven't even teased Mara Jade in any of the Disney content. I guess they *really* wanna have it so Luke never had a romantic relationship in his life.
On the plus side, at least it means they can't ruin her. Mara Jade started off as an angry space pirate with a hate boner for Luke that gradually softened up to him until falling in love, and I very much doubt Disney writers could pull that off without making her insufferable.

I think we are seeing a ton of friction between society and capitalism play out here. How many times have you heard someone say "if they want to make a story with X as the main character, that's fine BUT don't throw a preexisting title on it. Make your own story."? However, the executives freak out because people won't come to see that; they'll come to see The Little Mermaid or Peter Pan or whatever established IP.
When Chris mentioned women increasingly being the main breadwinners of their families it made me wonder how much of it is because of single mothers.

I never wanted these brands to be feminized. When I was a little girl, my big brother introduced me to so many different boyish media like Power Rangers, various Superhero cartoons, most video games (because truly, no matter what corporations want you to believe way more men than women play video games.) And I grew up loving these things. I never once wanted them to change to something girly, because that absolutely ruins the charm of what made them so great in the first place.
That show sucked then and it should be illegal now.

I’m sure I’m not just speaking for myself but I genuinely don’t want to come across as having “no women” stance. There’s nothing wrong with having female characters in shows/films I just wish the writers behind them didn’t shy away from giving them a hero’s journey treatment. They don’t all have to be flawless, lacking humility, or be the strongest and smartest in the room and preachy. It’s okay for them to be human. Because other humans connect with someone they can root for, someone they can see grow and self reflect. The only people that relates to narcissists are other narcissists and it’s really a disservice to the very demographic they’re trying to uplift.
I think a big problem is that traditional femininity is demonized in the west, and that women can’t be strong if they aren’t masculine. It stems from the west’s warped, ignorant views on what strength entails and how it exists in multiple different forms. The people writing this woke trash have probably grown up under this belief and it’s warped their perception of gender and societal norms, etc. I think a good solution would be more shows that take from Sailor Moon and teach girls that their femininity is a source of strength.

It's idiotic. As a 9 year old white boy, I went to the theater to see The Empire Strikes Back. I didn't see Luke Skywalker onscreen and think, "Oh, that's me. I can see myself up there!" I thought, "Lando is so cool! I want to grow up to be him!" Then, in Jedi, he becomes a General and blows up the second Death Star! He's handsome, he's charming, he's a hero. I didn't give a sh*t what color his skin was because he was a great *character* in the story.
The Narnia Chronicles, Tron, Flight of the Navigator, Holes, Treasure Planet were all made by Disney in an attempt to get into the boy market and all failed. Disney even subcontracted out to an outside party to create a series, to compete with Batman the animated series, which was kicking their butts in the 90’s and was taking a HUGE bite out of their Disney Afternoon viewership. Once it aired Gargoyles became a huge hit, but Disney just couldn’t help themselves and with the 3rd season of Gargoyles, Disney started medaling with the show and within a single season of television ruined the whole thing and now hardly anyone remembers it. And now we’re experiencing the same thing with Marvel, Star Wars, and Pixar. Sad how history keeps repeating itself like this.

I also don't remember those movies being targeted at the 'boy market'.
Treasure Planet mainly failed because the marketing behind it was bad and surprisingly limited. It was almost like they wanted that movie to fail.
But the true surprising thing is that Disney wanted to get boys into their movies, despite that I remember myself and many others really liking their movies. I was a huge fan of the Jungle Book, Aladdin, The Little Mermaid, Peter Pan, The Lion King, and so many others. Their target demographic was kids and families, which they already had.
Uh Narnia and Holes are just books they adapted. . . . And Narnia always seemed more popular with girls when I was growing up.
Treasure Planet was not made by Disney for any reason .. it was a Director not wanting to come back and make a movie, but did so on the condition he could make Treasure Planet.
He did, but Disney did him dirty and screwed over the marketing.

The most amazing part is that they were never fans of Star War to begin with. They could not have possibly watched the original movies. There was NOTHING to fix, nothing to balance out. It was released in freaking NINETEEN SEVENTY-SEVEN with lines like "into the garbage chute, flyboy!"
I remember a while back arguing with a woman who was gushing about Star Wars finally having a strong female character in Rey. She claimed to be a Star Wars fan… had nothing to say when confronted with the mountains of evidence as to how idiotic her point was, as Star Wars had tons of female characters with agency in the first 6 movies, not to mention the EU. These so-called fans are just the fad-chasers who mocked us as geeks a decade ago, before it became trendy. Women keep infiltrating and feminizing men’s spaces like this over and over.

Rippa's point at the end that he got way more backlash for creating a comic company that caters to an existing audience is the most important one here. They know that this is an existential threat to their movement, so they turn very hostile.
It's hilarious how the first season of star wars visions was done exclusively by Japanese studios and was much more varied and unique in it's storytelling than the second, which was done with mostly western Studios.
It respected a lot of Force Lore too.
George never Saw the Dark Side as something to coexist with the Light Side, thats modern Grey Jedi nonsense, Dark side is always parasitic and a zero sum game, it´s a Evil that exists and must always be put in check by the Light Side due to how dangerous it´s for everyone else in the galaxy thats the whole point.
The other critical error that they continue to make is that they come up with a character, their traits and personality, and then the universe literally bends itself in half to show off their personality.
In a good story a character can be themselves, but they bend to fit the reality of the universe and situation they are in.
For example, in Star Wars, a team of people rescue Leia, and as unbelievable as that rescue seemed under the circumstances they learn they were let go to be followed, and a member of their party died.
In the force awakens, Rey just escapes because she's awesome, and everyone else becomes brain dead to allow it to happen.
In the old movies you always felt like the heroes just barely won because on that day they were just a little better than the bad guys.
In the new content you feel like the bad guys are lobotomized, and could do nothing to the heroes except by accident.
The Feminization of media in general has been sad to watch.

I think not being able to identify or empathize with anyone that doesn’t look exactly like you, is a sign of low intelligence. Heroism, strength, stoicism, etc are traits that are universal. Goodness supersedes individual traits, because goodness can be found in ANY person, regardless of how they look. I find this stuff extremely pandering, and degrading. They really do think everyone else is just as dumb and incapable as they are

If you can't relate to a character because of their sex or race you can decide which of the ists you are. If you write good characters people who don't suck will respond positively regardless of race color or creed.

I was born in 1974, and movies and TV shows like Star Wars, Rambo, Indiana Jones, GI Joe, Transformers, He-Man, etc. were aimed to boys/male viewers, and it's the reason Hasbro made She-Ra so they could rope in girls/female viewers. The Disney Star Wars era has given a rise in popularity of the franchise among young girls, as young as toddlers. The fact that they are pushing so many movies and series this way though, is going to alienate many of the diehard fans who have stuck through the good and the bad of the Star Wars franchise!

As a somewhat white male…..Anne of Green Gables back in the late 80’s early 90’s was also a story about women and young girls.
Ah, memory unlocked. Xena, the great warriror princess. Who even at the moment the show aired quite clearly had some hints that Xena and Gabriel at the very least could be more than just friends. Callisto had those vibes too, if you prefer baddies. I remember watching that show when I was like 10 to 12, we never discussed gender/orientation topics at home, in school, on the TV, whatever, but the dash of queerness was for some reason absolutely clear to me. Not as the main theme though, the main thing was still how awesome they are.
Just have to say, I watched Lake Placid last night and laughed my ass off then almost cried when I realized there is no way in hell they would make a movie like that today

The biggest shock for me has been watching krdramas. They are so well written, with awesome character development, great narrative and superb acting. The worst are as good as anything the west produces and the best are so good they take your breath away. For example, My Mister is so good that it was hard for me to comprehend when I first watched it and when I rewatch I have to pause from time to time because I can't believe how good it is.

As a straight white male, I do tend to write my novels where many of the characters are straight white males as this is something that I know about so no matter the subject matter or genre of my stories whether they be sci-fi, fantasy, horror, or children's tales I try to include my own gender and beliefs into the characters as I believe that is really important to the stories i tell because I'm a straight white male, not sure if I told you that.
I'm a writer and I do the same thing too. A lot of the realism in my stories comes from me basing them on my own personal experiences, and many of my characters have similar traits to me in real life.

Your writing as a straight male certainly impacts me as a bisexual reader. As a bisexual reader, it's important that at least two characters are always show to be bisexual. Because I'm bisexual, I know that 1.8% of men are bisexual and 1.8% of women are bisexual, so it's completely credible and helps suspension of disbelief to have a third of the characters be bisexual. And when considering color theory, I think my bisexuality impacts the color themes I chose to use for my artwork and films. All of this is important, because I keep my bisexuality very private. It's a personal thing.

When Force Awakens came out in 2015 I excitedly bought tickets to the Thursday night advanced showing for me, my two buddies who love Star Wars and my girlfriend at the time. She was annoyed I bought the ticket bc she had no interest in going, which surprised me bc I thought everyone loved Star Wars. Opening night the theater was at least 90% male. The first part of your post I think is the most relevant. That “looks like me” = 15 minutes of fame, and relevance = meaning. I’ve said before that the rise of mass distribution, first by radio, then movies, tv, then the internet, and viral videos means that now, like never before in history do you have the chance to be a celebrity. And we have them by the truckload. This new generation doesn’t measure a life well-lived by their relationship to a single person, or role in a family unit. Those now come and go, or have contributed to traumas in their life. They now feel their life has been wasted if they don’t “make an impact” in their jobs or communities. It makes young people susceptible to activism with no thought to cause and effect. They shaped larger events. Achievement unlocked.
The darkest side of all this explains the rise in mass shootings even as gun ownership per capita has decreased. People who feel impotent know there’s one thing they can do that will make an impact on the news cycle, and have the world clamoring to know what drove them to do it. Even if they get unalived in the process, they made their impact as they went.
If you need a hero that you think is like you, YOU are the bigot.

Star Wars Visions was a perfect example of how they took something creative that was doing well & turned it into more corporate mush. Honestly it’s not the creators/animators, they are talented people. "Screecher's Reach", "The Spy Dancer", and "Aau's Song" were wonderfully animated and told interesting, imaginative tales exploring other facets of the Force or of the universe.

You can only do Imperial Era Rebels/Jedi vs. Empire so many times before it is completely boring. The Visions episodes that I liked the most have been the ones that went to different time periods in the Star Wars universe.

I was 10 years old in 1977. Star Wars changed my life. The world hadn't seen anything like it before. The impact it had on a whole generation cannot be underestimated. What followed was an explosion of entertainment with many sequels, spinoffs, ripoffs, etc etc that really changed the nature of cinema and additional great entertainment, particularly in the 80s.
Yet, Star Wars continued to impact on further generations, many years after the original trilogy. (To call them patricahal now is so wrong. They continue to instil a sense of magic for young kids). George's prequels copped a lot of criticism, fairly for the most part but they look like Citizen Kane compared to the divisive, dull drivel that is dished up now. It's gone so far from the whole feeling of the originals that it's Star Wars in name only.
It breaks my heart, really, after 46 years, to see how long it survived and how quickly it's been destroyed thanks to the self-centered whims of assholes like KK. I enjoyed Mandalorian Season 1 and Andor, but there's too much hatred directed at fans these days, while aiming for smaller and smaller audiences. It's no longer fun. It's no longer entertaining. I just can't stomach any of it anymore. I'm done.

I remember when TFA was about to be released. I noticed that every Star Wars-related commercial was about girls. A Toys 'R Us commercial featured a dad weeping because his daughter picked up a lightsaber. A cereal commercial showed a mom and her daughter playing with color-changing spoons. A commercial for Walmart or some other retailer showed a little ginger girl playing in a cardboard X-Wing. Another commercial for something I don't remember showed a group of carefully and unrealistically diverse kids pretending to be Jedi, with a little girl apparently being the leader. Even before the damn film hit I thought "wow, they're really pushing little girls in these commercials, that's an odd coincidence".
Then I saw this picture with Almost Emilia Clarke, Tit Mcboobs, some random nerd chick, and Kathleen Kennedy front and center with that appalling fuck you spelled "THE FORCE IS FEMALE" across all their chests. Suddenly everything made sense, and I knew that the franchise was over.
Has come to the conclusion that due to the themes and pacing of all these "Star Wars" and LucusFilm projects,
they are exactly like the daytime "Soap Opera's" of the 70s and 80's.
This is what you get with a 70's era Women's Liberation advocate like KK. She has recruited as many sheltered types of women who have had little social action in their lives
and were steeped in the Harlequin romance novels to go ahead and create their own versions of an original story line that caters to what they wish to see out of it.
Sadly, as a result, they only create what they find acceptable and appeasing for themselves alone while getting caught up with themselves doing it, completely forgetting about

Lets not forget that Kennedy's involvement as producer for as long has been writing press releases for all the movies she has ever been involved with and her relationship with all the daily rags is as close. As for the rest of the team she has assembled as a writing staff, they were selected not as much for the interest in writing as much, political activism and a desire to make a name for themselves by "Changing the World" as they see fit.

There's a reason why "boy" brands get turned into "girl" brands and not the other way around: No offence to female viewers but I've noticed that many often have a lower critical bar for film and television (Chick flicks for example). They seem less likely overall to think deeply about films and are more likely to just enjoy it in the moment like a theme park ride. "Toxic" (largely male) fan bases are the entertainment equivalent to people who actually read real news and want to understand whats actually happening rather than just "trusting the experts" in government and media.
To be fair you can't really compare "female viewers" with "fan bases", you're comparing members of a fanbase for something, heavily invested into this universe and its coherency, to normies (who I think we'll all agree have on average lower standards for than the fanbase of whatever media it is we're talking about) who at bottom don't give a damn about that universe in particular.
Of course you'll have one that'll be more critical than the other on average.
If you talk about typically woman oriented media, I'm not sure that their fanbases are any less critical of the material related to their media than a mostly male fanbase of equivalent size for their media.

It's fine for women to like soaps, I don't think they are dumb or something for it. It just appeals to many of them on an emotional level more than most guys perhaps. Well no of course, and that would still not be the case whether you were saying they can enjoy bad stuff in spite of it being bad or whether you were saying they can enjoy bad stuff because they can’t tell it’s bad. I was just pointing out the fact that it’s not really possible to know even if they like more bad stuff than men at all if you compare two groups that are not comparable, namely fans of a thing vs normies.
And I could point toward how so many men fans of SW lapped Disney SW right up too, or many dumb action movies if we’re talking about men normies.
And that’s a different point from my prior point, this new point is moreso « even assuming a fairer comparison of normies vs normies or fans vs fans, it’s hard to know whether it’s generalizable given the fact that we can’t really control for much at all ». Aka « even if your experience was 100% genuine I don’t think we can generalize it ».

I do think Disney is catering to women, obviously, I don’t think it’s because Disney imagines men are more media critical than women (I doubt that the higher ups at Disney have such a high opinion of men XD), I just think it’s because left leaning people think that the SW brand will attract men all on its own and the female leads will attract women.

What's happening with Starwars today is similar to what happened sometimes as children. When a group of boys are playing and having a hell of a time adventuring exploring running all over the place, building tree forts etc and there's one girl that feels left out and she starts to resent it. So she makes a scene and destroys your fort and gets super bossy bringing down the fun and eventually runs to the parents to get you all in trouble for not including her and you all get grounded ultimately splitting up the group. Kathleen saw Starwars just like that, a guy thing she couldn't wait to put her claim on and make all about the girls. Any criticism she gets probably fuels her resentment and makes her double down on her choices. The girls are here to stay type energy. She couldn't stand to see boys/men enjoy something so deeply and starwars today is her tantrum. She probably doesn't even realize there are plenty of well written strong female starwars characters that existed before her. I'm willing to bet she thinks Rey's the first.
Or else those characters weren't financially successful enough for her to covet for her own profit.
@@jakzine540 You bring up a valid point. Female characters do struggle to bring in the money at times. So maybe she sees Rey as her triumph. Its not impossible though they just have to be written well. You know what I'd actually love to see, a truly despicable female villain like if they want equality so much make the next sith lord a woman. Not a sympathetic one either. I'm talking Azula from avatar levels of power and evil. We haven't seen that on the big screen like ever really. In that way it'll make perfect sense for the guy to get his butt kicked in the first few encounters while he goes on the hero's journey. So you give guys us guys a hero's journey we can relate to like Galen Marek or Luke and women also get to enjoy a badass evil chick just wrecking folks until her defeat that is. Both parties happy.

@@_1Sentry1_ Shagging is what boys and girls do when they get together. What is great about a female villain is that she uses her guile and cunning, and madness, to fight her adversary. Having been married to a couple of female villains, I know what I'm talking about.

To be fair, its common in anime for the girl to be badass and kickbutt with super powers or big weapons. Usually the male would if they want the MC to have a harem. So seeing most protagonists in Visions as female doesn’t surprise me nor did i see it as a bad thing.
It’s worth noting there was 1 episode of Visions S2 with a male protagonist, but even so, he was more of a simplistic pov character who literally dies halfway through the episode.

So "The Acolyte" is going to be the Star Wars version of "Wicked" or "Maleficent". Totally original though, of course.

Rippa got it exactly right. They don't care about the audience. They care about their own career advancement, the approval of their bosses and their industry. That's it. If anything, the "audience" is an impediment. It doesn't matter if their product tanks. What do they care? They already got their paycheck, their next raise, their next promotion, etc.
I remember when the Force was just microscopic life forms in blood. And we thought THAT was a little silly. The narcissism of these people in charge of Star Wars is staggering. What made SW fun to me , as a unremarkable kid in the 80s was the fact that it contained totally alien , monsters and technology. Awesome large scale, fast paced action, sword fights with a weapon so awesome we still wish we had them. Sure SW tells a intimate human tale of family, and epic space opera...but it was the bombastic NON familiar elements of the tapestry that I really liked, that Turbo charged our imagination.
