As a senior product manager I also believe the concept of the 100x engineer is dead because AI is the 1000x engineer. The only thing separating you and the machine will be fungible skills: conveying complex technical information to others, empathy, leadership (google even has a test solely for leadership)

@@JoshtheFifith Sure happy to clarify. Empathy is a soft skill, one of the main 8 skills heavily scored in Meta's behavioral interview. It is the ability "to understand and share the feelings of another person".
How do you boost the morale of individual members of your team, all of whom could be completely different from one another? How do you resolve personal conflicts in your team? These are just some of the many inevitable issues a leader will face, which all require some level of empathy.

I've started to code in elementary school, ended as IT Technican. Found first job at game development, then second one and finally the third job is somewhere between automation and games, but... I started to design electronics. Now, I have my self-crafted smarthome system that is not only software, but also hardware. My wife was not so excited initially, but now she got used to the added value. I think, the problem solving capabilities will still play a key role in IT, no matter how much is delegated to AI. Sometimes AI is unable to get deeper look into the problem due as the context that machine knows is limited.

I think the companies that best leverage the opportunities presented by AI and ML will be those ones that empower their SWEs to bolster/accelerate their work with new tools, and also give them the opportunity and training to work on other non-technical skills like PM'ing, communicating between tech teams and the non-tech stakeholders in the company (like CEOs, Shareholders, stuff like that).
The employees that don't show much interest or aptitude for getting better constantly and using new tools available to level up their work/contributions to their company will probably get replaced by AI or ML tools that fill that gap. But those tools aren't going to fill in for technical employees who also have other non-tech skills for a long time - probably never.

There's so many misconceptions about AI and ML's effects on tech and technologists out there today! Cyrus is right on the money here!
Those who last the course will be those who always excelled regardless of the tech boom - the engineers who show initiative to harness new tools AND who stay on top learning new stacks and build up their soft skills (speaking writing, project managing, etc) - while those who just coast along with the current tech skills will eventually get nudged out by AI ML tools that make them redundant.
That happens in most fields and always has. But you can avoid being left behind by constantly skill stacking and making sure AI works for you, not instead of you!

I think people are getting ahead of themselves and overestimating the influence of AI. First of all, it is not that advanced. If you throw it a harder problem to solve, it starts going in circles and could really mislead an engineer, wasting their time even further.
However, more importantly, where does AI come from? Does it fall from the sky?
Does it grow in the woods? No, it doesn't!
Large corps are behind it. And even if they are charging small fees now, so people can get on board and use it, this will not be the case in the future. Once they establish these new monopolies, they will absolutely abuse their power and start charging big bucks.
Then companies will realize they can't get rid of programmers that easily, even if they dream about it.
What, are you telling me that instead of doing things the old proven way, where on one side is the company and on the other side is the engineer and they sit down and discuss responsibilities on both sides, shake hands, sign a contract and get to work - now these same companies are going to negotiate with Open AI, Google... and tell them how the contract will look like. Yea, sure! Good luck to your sh!ty little start up even contacting any of these corporations, let alone telling them how you want their AI to work for you and under what conditions. I'm dying to see how that plays out for you.
You forget that it's all about money and control. If it was that easy to replace coders, most other jobs would be gone by now too. And you start directly with the idea of replacing the people who do the hardest job in a software company, write the actual code, really? ...not the HR people who mostly drink coffee and chat all day, not some useless "product owners" or someone else, but straight with the programmers! Keep dreaming!
And lastly, in the future even more software is expected to be created and maintained. Whole countries are now competing for dominance. Someone will win that race, but guess what... that's not going to be the country that thinks that engineers are obsolete! That's for sure. So watch out about China and others.
...because when that happens, you'll start saying that you didn't see it coming. Well someone is seeing it

    • @Codesmith
      @Codesmith  2 месяца назад +1

Thanks for sharing your thoughts-there’s definitely a lot to consider about AI’s role in engineering and the tech industry overall! You’re absolutely right that the demand for skilled programmers isn’t going anywhere. AI might change how some tasks are approached, but the need for engineers to solve complex problems, design solutions, and drive innovation remains strong, especially with global competition increasing.
For those looking to future-proof their careers, training in software engineering alongside AI/ML can be a powerful combination. Programs like our AI/ML technical leadership program aim to provide a robust foundation in the latest AI techniques. This way, engineers are equipped with the toolkit to understand, develop, and leverage it strategically within real-world constraints and industry dynamics.
It’s about staying versatile and informed-AI may not replace programmers, but knowing how to work with it can definitely elevate what engineers bring to the table. Thanks again for your perspective, it is always amazing coming across likeminded people to our team at Codesmith!

Cyrus says “Learn to tell stories. Learn to build stuff”. The problem is these are fundamentally different mindsets
If you love storytelling, it can be a huge adjustment to spend hours struggling to figure out some complex engineering problem
But you have to. That’s where the breakthroughs happen. When I most want to get away from a problem, if I can force myself to stick it out for 1 more minute, that’s when the insight crystalizes. It’s almost like our minds ‘resist’ that moment of clarity
I love getting to dig into these sorts of ideas with Cyrus. Yes they’re about the rise of AI, but they’re also about the deeper nature of what doing fulfilling work looks like

Its simple, asia/india has tens of millions of software coders all ready to work for just above minimum wage. Every year hundreds of thousands more become available. Capital has the ability to access low cost labor from anywhere in the world. This further drives cost down. Its an amazing time to be capital and a horrible time to be labor.
I cant believe I am going to say this but if you are looking for a career then building a business in the trades is your best outcome - compete locally without competition from low cost countries. Electrician, HVAC, Plumbing, Construction, etc. Its still competitive but you wont be competing against 100k new indian coders every 12 months.

Got chewed up and spit out from investment banking and has come into tech thinking he has a leg up because he has 5 buttons undone at all times and that "he can speak".. Spends the entire video making these broad generalizations that all current software engineers are basically losers who will eventually be obsolete (for no reason lol) and the good ones will be relegated to the dungeons to keep everything working while everyone else reads the 48 laws of power, pretends to work and plays politics. What a goose.
