Hey guys! Thank you all for sticking with us through our multiple episodes covering the Pax Romana period of the Roman Empire. We know this phase of history might have felt a bit slower at times but it's a vital part of the Roman story, filled with peace , prosperity, and stability. We will add 2 extra episodes that will be part of this period (hint: it’s about Britain).
However, the tides are about to change! With the end of this episode we're entering a new chapter-the beginning of the end for the Roman Empire.
So, get ready , because the drama, challenges, and chaos of Rome's decline are about to unfold in the next months... Stay tuned! - Knowledgia

Avidius Cassius actually acted at the behest of Aurelius's wife, Faustina. The emperor, Marcus Aurelius had fallen seriously ill and no one, (including his doctors) expected him to survive.
Faustina fearing for the lives of her children, (Commodus was still too young to take the purple) asked Avidius in Syria to declare himself emperor and march on Rome.
She distrusted her husband's other generals and believed that the man based in the Levant would make a pliable puppet. Her plan backfired when Aurelius made a miraculous recovery and Cassius subsequently became an embarrassment.
He was conveniently killed by a centurion in Egypt, (he was stabbed to death). Dispatched before he could tell his side of the story and expose the treachery of Faustina.

The nomination of Commodus was a disgrace, that's for sure, but it's not the only cause of the delcine.
Rome never had a clear system for the succession. That, together with the growth of the army and the decrease of power of the senate, would cause the military anarchy in any case: it was just a matter of time.

Crrimea at the time had been inhabited by Greeks for ~1000 years and was a very advanced society that produced a lot of grain which it exported in other Greek cities. It was part of the Greek world, not heavily militarized and therefor it was easy to absorb in the empire.

I'm just wondering why Marcus Aurelius, a stoic philosopher and great thinker, could have chosen his son Commodus as his heir. It seems so out of character for him to have chosen his own reckless child, rather than an equally stoic and visionary citizen, to succeed him.
