    I found an AE-1 and AT-1 in a dumpster. They were excellent condition except the foam was shot, so I replaced it for $12 per camera, from eBay. It was a very tedious procedure. Then I had to replace the shutter magnet, which I found for about $20 on eBay. It was a simple but delicate procedure, remove the base plate, and micro-solder 2 tiny hair wires. Both cameras seem to work just fine now. I really like your videos, and the vintage commercials are cool!

    I love shooting with my AE-1P. I imagine the AE-1 Program, due to the later release date, has less issues with the electronics and deteriorating felt than the older AE-1.

    I had a black body AE-1. I gave it to my sister when I jumped ship to Nikon. Maybe I had a lemon, but the AE-1 had a much better and more consistent light meter than the Nikon FA's matrix meter, and I sent in my FA numerous times to have the light meter calibrated. The AE-1was so good, my father was impressed enough to buy the A-1 - He just had to one-up me. Another friend was impressed enough to get the updated AE-1 Program. Dad's A-1was so complex, he had me make any changes he wanted while shooting. The A-1 was really plasticy, though. I was always afraid I'd break the shutter lock lever. But I digress. The AE-1 was great camera, and those batteries are still available. Same battery used in my Minolta Autometer III-F. I get them at the local drug store (chain - Walgreens here in the US). Amazon has them cheap as chips, too. Might be harder in Canada, but I don't see why, other than Duracell distributor being lazy.

    Nice vid. It’s crazy how expensive these are now. Thrift stores and garage sales are the way to go if you want a Canon A series camera. Whereas I regularly see the AE-1/P going for $125 on the low end on FB marketplace and CL for just camera and the FD 1.8, most thrift stores still sell them in the $75 range. Which while still higher than a few years back is way better than $100+.

    I learned on an AE-1, sold it and later got another one when I got back into Canon FD mount. I wound up selling that as I preferred shooting with the FTb and F-1's. As for seals and mirror dampening foam turning to goo, there are kits available on Ebay and takes about two hours to fix. As for the batteries, they too are out there, you just have to look, I prefer the 4SR44's as they are silver oxide and last longer than the alkaline varients. The one major Achilles heel of all A-Series is the dreaded cough/squeal. It can be a DYI fix if you know what you're doing, That's why I prefer FTb's

    • @AzrielKnight
      @AzrielKnight  7 лет назад

      Thanks for all that great info Bill! I have tried and tested "art foam" from crafts stores and got no light leaks. It's not pretty though. I have also learned that squeal doesn't affect shutter speed as I have had shutter tests spot on with and without. It is annoying though :)

      Yeah a few things stuck out for me that may smooth out your content.
      What you got right was how relaxed you seemed, and having someone follow you with a camera. You also had a final thoughts at the end which was good. Though the music wasn't my favourite it was a consistent theme throughout.
      The first issue is you gotta know the facts. So if you can't remember what year the model was made, don't guess on camera and if you do guess, use a line of text in editing to overlay a "yep I was right, 1947" or "nope, way off 1963"
      While you were explaining the functions, I would have overlaid a picture of the camera so I could see what you were talking about, or at least turn the camera around to "my view".
      Lastly you made the classic mistake of focusing on the back wall (window?) at the end then sitting in front, thus blurring you out. I stick a light stand where I'm going to sit or stand, and focus on that.
      hope that helps.

    The battery is easily avaialable.The Silver Oxide should last 10,000 exposures! Older bodies will lessen that! However if you carefully dismantle the original, it is 4x1.55 cells (76) ! Reassemble! Did same for my pentax 6x7. I seen pix in snow! Battery not like cold of Toronto (minus 10~30C). Lenses are superb. Lower contrast like Leica lenses of same time! Changing ISO/ASA a pain! The newer, some modifications is the AE-1P the better option! The mouse squeak means service reqd.

    I picked up a mid production run AE-1 (around a low 3million serial number) on Kijiji with the f1.8 kit lens. The seals had just been replaced and it works great, and no light leaks or curtain squeaks. Not as common a find as you would think. I checked easily a dozen goodwill type stores, used stores and even pawn shops over the summer and never found one. But it was worth the wait as the kijiji find was only $55.00. :)

    Fixing the light seals on the film door is easy, there are tutorials on how to do this, you can either get foam to cut yourself (5$ or less) or get precut ones. The foam in the mirror box is not a light seal, it is important though as it is there to protect the mirror as it slaps the top of the box when you press the shutter.

    These are great cameras and I am very fond of the A line. I have owned both a AE-1, and AE-1 Program and right now I have and AT-1 which are less common but also a great camera. I am curious to hear what your thoughts are on some of the other FD models like the FTB which is my main FD body. • @AzrielKnight
      @AzrielKnight  8 лет назад

    • @certs743
      @certs743 8 лет назад +1

      Well the AT-1 is jut an AE-1 with no program mode and was sold as a cheaper option. That is fine by me because I like all manual cameras.
      The FTB is much the same but all mechanical. The battery only controls the light meter. Seems they were marketed to a "prosumer" or professional on a budget that did not need or could not afford an F-1. They were all metal unlike the plastic of the A series bodies and so are much heavier and I think the all mechanical design was to appeal to those that at the time did not trust electronic particularly for a working camera. The model of FTB that I have actually has the Canon quick load system for loading film too inherited from the Canonet models. It works great. I also have the original bill of sale and they warrantee card. It belonged to my father in law.

      +Daniel Stewart I like both my AT-1 and FTB-QL alot but if you want a heavier body I think you could drive a tank over a TX but maybe that's just my imagination. I understand the TX to be a stripped down FTb. BTW a 50 F1.4 for $25 is an awesome find, I'm looking for one myself.

    Seeing how expensive the ae-1 and ae-1 Program are selling, might as well get the a-1. The a-1 is a better camera right off the shelf. 5 automatic exposure modes including manual, better construction, more reliable and most importantly cheaper that the ae-1 and ae-1 Program. The nostalgia value shot the ae-1s right through reasonable prices lately.

    I liked the AE-1 Program much better than the original AE-1, partly because of the addition of program mode but primarily because of the shutter speed dial. Unfortunately the battery door broke--a flaw with this model. I picked an almost mint AL-1 on eBay a couple of years ago and it was great until it's battery door broke too. I tried to repair it but failed. I have a number of FD lenses, so I'm considering getting an AV-1 or a T70 to replace camera body. But I won't be getting an AE-1---doesn't seem worth it.

    Just got a mint condition one in black. Does film have to be loaded in the camera to advance and fire? I have a fresh battery in it, no film and I can't do either.

    • @AzrielKnight
      @AzrielKnight  8 лет назад +1

      hmmmm, you should be able to advance and fire without a roll, but you do need a battery. Try putting tinfoil in the battery compartment to tighten up the connection. I have one AE-1 that needs a piece to make sure the battery has contact.

    • @josephjester4917

      A-1. Higher ISO rating on the meter (up to ISO 12,800), +\- 3 stop exposure compensation dial (if memory serves...might be 2...don't have my A-1 close to confirm), first SLR of its time to feature all modern camera modes, shutter speeds up to 30 seconds versus the Program's maximum of 2 seconds.
      The A-1 was geared for the professional market, while the AEs were more for the amateurs.

    • @caldera878
      @caldera878 5 лет назад

      A-1 has all Program, Aperture, Shutter and Manual modes being the first in a canon SLR. Better build quality, reliability and metering too.

      Hi Phillip, thanks for the suggestion. Right now I am trying to stick to cameras at least 10 years old and I haven't yet reviewed anything digital. That being said if I ever come across an sx30 I'll give my two cents. I think there's a place for bridge models for sure.

    seems odd that a con is no aperture priority. wasn't this a fully manual camera? I know this is an overblown example but it is kind of like saying that a con is that there is no digital sensor.

    • @AzrielKnight
      @AzrielKnight  7 лет назад

      It's a con because it has shutter priority, but no aperture priority. An issue they'd fix with the AE-1 Program.

    • @josephjester4917
      @josephjester4917 5 лет назад

      Azriel Knight the Program doesn't exactly have aperture priority. It's my understanding that it's program mode, shutter priority, and manual.
      The A-1, on the other hand, does have aperture priority, along with the other three modes to boot.

    • @ChaplainDMK
      @ChaplainDMK 3 года назад

      @@AzrielKnight AV-1 has aperture priority, loosing shutter priority - but since it has a much simpler ISO dial you can use that as exposure compensation.

    I cannot get the shutter to fire on a Canon AE-1 I just bought off of ebay...I don't currently have a lens ...Will this model fire the shutter without a lens ?....If so...what am I doing wrong?...Or did I buy a dud?....Seller said camera works great....It wouldn't be the first time I bought a great working camera that didn't work at all ....But please advise me....I don't want that to be the case....I hope I am doing something wrong....It is a beautiful LOOKING camera....Looks to be in good condition....I do hope that I'm doing something wrong and this camera is in as good of shape as it looks.......HELP PLEASE ! ....

      Batteries were installed...I even tried new ones...just in case the current ones were weak...still nothing...I am returning the camera...I am so disappointed ...This is the third AE-1 I've tried...I cant seem to find one that works...I think I'm going to stick with my Minolta X-700...They (the Minoltas)... don't seem to have nearly as much problems as the old Canons...I think I'm going to abandon the idea of having a working manual Canon film camera altogether.....I give up....loll.....

    • @AzrielKnight
      @AzrielKnight  8 лет назад

      Sorry to hear about the busted camera. They made a lot of AE-1's hoping to make money back on the lenses. So we still see a lot but quality wasn't really job one....
      If you are regularly hunting for used cameras you'll run into another one.
      Don't give up :P

    • @bucksellers5364
      @bucksellers5364 8 лет назад +1

      Oh well....Thanks for trying anyways...I will eventually try another AE-1...But as I mentioned before I still have my Minolta X-700...and a great working Minolta XE-5 ...And a nice assortment of rangefinders....All of the rangefinders work great....But as you surely know they aren't much on medium or long range shooting...Not without a lot of accessories and mods..etc...I prefer SLR's overall....But went on a rangefinder kick for a while.. I rarely pick up the rangefinders lately....If it wasn't for the medium and long range shooting limitations I'd probably prefer rangefinders...But that's not the way the cookie crumbles...lol....I will probably always shoot film....As long as its affordable anyways.....I also prefer shooting black and white....And as I'm sure you know black and white film is not cheap anymore....My Minolta X-700 is my go to camera....I love that camera...To me there is not a better user friendly camera made......Fun to shoot....Dependable....I've loved the X-700 since I picked up the first one 3 or 4 X-700's ago....lol...... I don't have anything bad to say about the X-700....I do wish it had a metal body though....OK enough of my ramblimg.... thanks again Azriel !.....Keep up the great work my friend!........ I always appreciate the help you provide!!..... Thanks again !!! ..... Buck

      UPdate....I bought a Canon EF a few days ago....It is already film tested....I used B&W film and processed myself...Pictures are GREAT !!! ...All shutter speeds work and are accurate! ...Meter is operational and accurate ! ...I am HAPPY !!! ...I own a number (A pretty large number) of vintage working film cameras.....but have been wanting a working Canon film camera for a while now of the mechanical variety.......It finally happened !! ...lol.....I am like a kid at Xmas !! ... OH yeah if anyone is interested I have a LOT of old Rangefinders that I am selling... I like the rangfinders but prefer the SLR's.... I'll probably hold onto one or two rangefinders but I have at least a half-dozen or more to sell.....I am also selling a few old SLR cameras ....One of those is a Minolta X-5 that is in good working condition...I like the X-5.but I LOVE the Minolta X-700...I learned film photography on an X700....so that will probably always be my favorite....When new to photography students ask me what camera I recommend ...I ALWAYS recommend the Minolta X-700...To me there is not a better camera made to learn on....You can use it as a point and shoot.....or use it totally manual....Or take advantage of its aperture priority mode....(A VERY GOOD BUILT IN METERING SYSTEM DOESNT HURT EITHER !!!! ) ... All of these options is why it is to me THE best camera for new photographers....Then after you learn to shoot manually it is a GREAT camera to use for ANYONE....with or without experience....I have a Minolta with a wide assortment of lens...but I guess my favorit lens with the Minolta X-700 is an old vivitar 100mm 2.8....A truly SHARP lens !!! ....Short and lightweight enough to carry around all day...yet with enough focal length to not have to walk up to everything you shoot....A lot of people disagree with me on that..I guess most of them prefer the 50mm....And that too is a great lens ...But personally I just love the 100mm....OK I guess I have chewed on your ears enough.....Yep I'm a talker when it comes to old film cameras....I LOVE shooting film !!! ...Love talking about shooting film....Love talking about vintage film cameras !!! ....Thanks again Azriel Knight !!! You are the man !!!

    • @AzrielKnight

      Personally if I were to buy one on eBay. I would get one that is CLAed. what are your other choices?

    • @RUS-dv5sm
      @RUS-dv5sm 8 лет назад

      Azriel Knight Basic requirements:
      1. Full manual control
      2. Battery should be easily available
      3. Functions should not rely on the battery (for the shutter speed and light metering no problem)
      4. Good quality lens
      5. Old classic style (like the Nikon F3)
      6. 35mm film
      7. Priced below $25
      There is a lot of rangefinders and SLRs on ebay (more than 50 old/vintage camera are being listed everyday), I keep losing the auctions.. Well, because the auctions are update daily, i've got lot of chances to win one vintage camera satisfying my requirements.
      Would you suggest a camera (or few) that meet my requirements according to your experience.

      I live in Reno and found that out of all the Walgreens in town, only 2 develop film in house. All others are sent out and you do NOT get your negatives, but photos are put on a CD. Those sent out, take about 1 week. Walmart will sent them out for developing, usually taking about 2 weeks.

      You're right, but at the time didn't know about the other 2 Walgreens that developed in house until I got home and started making calls to find out who else does it. Found several other places, though no idea on price and if they also put the prints on a cd.
