I like the idea of doing the new-to-me list and not just the 2023 releases. I discovered some of my all-time favourites this past year and not all were 2023 releases. Anachrony is one of my favourite games but I haven't played the Fractures of Time expansion, yet! You're inspiring me to make that happen this year.
My top ten new-to-me would be:
    10. Lost Ruins of Arnak (2020)
    9. 3 Ring Circus (2023)
    8. Terracotta Army (2022)
    7. Scholars of the South Tigris (2023)
    6. The White Castle (2023)
    5. Obsession (2018)
    4. Sabika (2022)
    3. Nucleum (2023)
    2. Voidfall (2023)
    1. Wayfarers of the South Tigris (2022)

Cool list, The White Castle is definitely on my radar now. I knew of the hype but was not sold on the game but you might have convinced me. Some "new" games to me in 2023 were Raiders of Scythia, Legacy of Yu, Escape the Dark Castle (+ some others) and the most important board game in my life so far... Spirit Island. You have contributed to my decision to get it in April 2023 and I am now about 1000 solo games in. It opened my eyes to solo and co-op gaming like nothing else. I am obsessed with this game. So thank you and good luck in the new year!

Fields of Arle is so good. I was inspired to play then buy it thanks to y’all’s playthrough. Easily the best 2p Euro game I’ve played and an easy recommendation when people ask which Uwe games to play at that count (along with All Creatures Big & Small of course!) and which Euro games are best at two player more generally.

Happy new year btw you two lovely souls! I was really surprised Fields of Arle appeared in your list, although thinking about it you guys really loved A Feast for Odin, so I guess I'm not exactly surprised now 😅. I'm still looking for a copy of Nana, and now a Christmas version! This is an interesting list especially the Ceasar and White Castle ones.
Edit: Going to be putting my full attention on the Tea and Trade expansion for Fields of Arle! Been waiting for that for a loooong time.

yesssss oranienburger! my number one of last year. i love how tight the competition for spaces is, very interactive even though each player has so much going on. i haven't watched your channel in a little while and this list reminded me why i used to watch you all the time. caesar, sky team, etc, great variety. i'll have to check out inheritors and trio and maybe work up the courage to finally add in the fractures of time expansion XD you lacerda nerds lololol. my other tops were scholars of south tigris, i thought it flowed great for how many interlocking mechanisms there are. and check out The Barracks Emperors from GMT.. it's a crazy design where players plays cards on a grid around pirze cards.. but you must always play on the same side of them (ie player 1 plays on the top, p2 on left, p3 on bottom, p4 on right. OR in 2p p1 on top/bot p2 on l/r). but note the top of one is the bottom of another! it's actually mostly abstract despite the historical theme.. has a lot of mori's caesar vibes (tho much longer). a weird duck for sure but rouneded out my top 3. cheers!

Anachrony is amazing. There is the right amount of pressure for every decision, Building you base feels great, the theme is wacky and allows for creative problem solving and the end of the game is something you prepare for and wraps things up in a fresh way. It is a perfect game in my opinion.

Me and my partner mostly got into board gaming this year after being gifted War Chest (last xmas, not this, so doesn't quite make the list even though it's definitely top 3 for me), so few if any of these are from 2023 to my knowledge...that said! These are my 10 favourites:
    1) Mind MGMT - we definitely wanted at least 1 hidden movement game and I'm sure we made the right choice. The more you play the more deeply you adapt, you might think one side is more overpowered but then you find the opposite after sticking with it, and _then_ you unlock the Shift boxes which unlock even more crazy mechanics for one or both sides. Big hit in our house.
    2) Libertalia: The Winds of Galecrest - Strikes an interesting balance between calculated strategy and desperate chaos, the more people you play with the wilder it gets. You always know what the opponents have but some cards from previous rounds carry over, and trying to juggle it all is hilarious futility.
    3) Radlands - this is such a tightly balanced and manic card dueler and I'm grateful that it's not muddied with being a CCG. Every choice matters and sometimes you have to embrace the chaos of the post-apocalypse and sacrifice your own stuff in order to get those precious camp kills and massive event cards out.
    4) The Castles of Burgundy - needs no introduction? Not the easiest to get to table but always a hit when it does.
    5) Ra - another game that blossoms with more players, one of those easily learned games that presents agonising decisions and amusing, competitive table talk.
    6) Root - Not one I've been able to play in person, the learning curve is a bit much for others at the moment, but I love the bloodthirsty and diverse factions and the wild asymmetry with everyone doing sort-of-the-same things, but at the same time not.
    7) Roam - this was a pleasant surprise, we expected it to be on the fillery side but we've had a really good time with it, especially with the extra rules.
    8) Tang Garden - highly photogenic game, but not one lacking in strategic gameplay. It's a bit long, but watching the shared garden develop is pleasing, and setting up the perfect positioning for your characters is highly satisfying.
    9) Honey Buzz - In a world with many engine buildery worker placementy games, this was our first, and we loved it! Not too heavy on the setup and not too long either.
    10) Verdant - In a world where Cascadia gets all the attention, I honestly prefer the more perfectionist-unfriendly Verdant. While your house will never be perfect, there are always interesting arrangements and configurations, and the thumb system is a nice addition to the decision making

      Great List!! What is Delta???

    • @JonathonV
      @JonathonV 6 месяцев назад

@@BeforeYouPlayDelta is so good! Just played it with some new players tonight. 😀 (Originally a Kickstarter but it’s come to retail, published by GameBrewer.) Steampunk theme with lovely art. It’s got deckbuilding, a bit of area control, track advancement, set collection, and a card gathering mechanic reminiscent of Skymines/Mombasa, so there are plenty of strategies available. It’s not overly hard to learn, but the sequencing of your actions leads to some interesting decisions (and frequent regrets once you inevitably forget to fully plan something out … or at least that’s what happens to me 😂). Based on the games you two typically recommend, I feel like you’d like it a lot! 👍
