      Hey I noticed Nick was demonstrating a fill. It was double stroke. He called it a liner fill. I thought liner was just single strokes adding the bass drum here and there. Am I way off or could you maybe explain if you can about how liner is supposed to be exacuted? Thanks

    I have been playing for 48 years. Nick knows what he is talking about. Back in the day, the Ghost note he is referring to was called the Grace note.

    Excellent ideas & Nick is a great communicator. I’m an advanced player but still found this very useful. These are not difficult but getting them clean and fast requires slow, clear practice with a metronome preferably

    Just call that first a 6 stroke roll! RLLRRL best rudiment I ever learned! So useful especially groove hat snare work.

    I can't tell you how many times I listened to this. One of the best drum fill vids, ever. I do find the counting for #2 a bit confusing. To me, he's playing two different examples. But, this lesson is awesome. Clean and well explained.

    The groove is 1 2 3 4 with the snare on 2 and 4 - 1 bar. The fill also counts off 1 2 3 4 - 1 bar. Love your videos and the fills are just what I was looking for. My apologies for the counting.

    They sound hard, because they are hard - at the TEMPO you're playing them at. I consider myself a pretty versatile drummer, but even I'd struggle with the second one lmao. Change easy to intermediate, at least.

    As a guitarist learning drums in VR, it was new for me to learn that you use the same hand twice in a row rather than alternate the hands which I figured would be quicker.

    Phrasing that last fill as quarter notes I would consider more on the easy side, but phrasing them as he did as dotted 8th’s is pretty damn hard.

    Turn that last 6 stroke roll into a double paradiddle and you can end up with a right hand to hit a cymbal. Nice fills.

    There are only three beats in the second fill and the lick sounds like 32s. I’m not quite getting it. Does the first note restart on beat 4?

      I think you are right. If the fill pattern is 12 notes long, and he is using a 16th note subdivision, it has to be 3 beats. I don’t think he was explaining it the way he meant to, but maybe I missed something.

    I've been playing drums for over a decade now. This is a very great and helpful drum fills lesson. I have a major problem with my left hand when trying to apply drum fills while playing to songs in my church. My left hand is not as strong with double strokes as my right hand. It really sucks.

      Lance Hollum Linear just means that none of the notes are played in unison with each other, they’re all separate. It can be any rudiment.

    Some blushda action...I took a few lessons from my best friends dad then took off from there. Never learned rudiments till years later but realised i was playing paradidles and such just didn't know it was a thing lol.

    Double stroke rolls are easy to play fast when using a pad or an electric kit, but i can't get much power with it - any tips?

      Hey, Edward. Absolutely. Double strokes (and other rudiments) do get easier with practice time. I’ve found that the best way to practice double strokes is on a softer surface so that you have to work harder for the second stroke. Something like the RTOM Moongel pad works well:

      Also, to get them more even, try inverting the double strokes. Instead of RRLLRRLL, try RLLRRLLRR. The cool thing about that is that it puts more focus on the second stroke of the double. Once you build up speed, you can tell that your double stroke roll will be more even.

    Can someone please tell me why when using double bass some drummers just use a double bass pedal with the one bass drum and some use two bass drums?

      another thing is that a double pedal can only produce as much volume as one bass drum, while two bass drums can produce about twice as much, especially if they're not well muffled

    Yes, they are easy when you play them slowly, but that way they are also not really the same thing

      I don't think they're that hard. I think it all just depends on the level that you're at. I am 14 and I can play these fills at his speed at ease. It's just practicing and working on it. Everything is easy if you play it slow enough.
