Hey I noticed Nick was demonstrating a fill. It was double stroke. He called it a liner fill. I thought liner was just single strokes adding the bass drum here and there. Am I way off or could you maybe explain if you can about how liner is supposed to be exacuted? Thanks
Hey man, great video. I'm only a few months into drumming and i've watched this a few times. Good job on breaking down the grooves and playing slow so it's easier to work upwards
Very nice job John. I like the simple way you break things down, a true sign of a good teacher. Not only can you play it, you know how to help others do the same. Thanks for sharing, Igor
Thanks for the videos, these fills sounds amazing. Most of the tutorials about easy drum fills “sound hard” are actually very boring. But yours actually sounds incredible
Excellent ideas & Nick is a great communicator. I’m an advanced player but still found this very useful. These are not difficult but getting them clean and fast requires slow, clear practice with a metronome preferably
I can't tell you how many times I listened to this. One of the best drum fill vids, ever. I do find the counting for #2 a bit confusing. To me, he's playing two different examples. But, this lesson is awesome. Clean and well explained.
The groove is 1 2 3 4 with the snare on 2 and 4 - 1 bar. The fill also counts off 1 2 3 4 - 1 bar. Love your videos and the fills are just what I was looking for. My apologies for the counting.
They sound hard, because they are hard - at the TEMPO you're playing them at. I consider myself a pretty versatile drummer, but even I'd struggle with the second one lmao. Change easy to intermediate, at least.
@@misternasty2216 It's nothing to do with ego here. I just don't consider these 'easy' fills for beginners. By all means, go ahead and learn them though.
Nick great playing as always.Your feel and dynamics are always fabulous. And that Mapex kit looks and sounds so sweeeet! What finish is that? I love Mapex, so glad Sweetwater has added them to the roster.
As a guitarist learning drums in VR, it was new for me to learn that you use the same hand twice in a row rather than alternate the hands which I figured would be quicker.
Could we get a vid on how to drum fast on the bass drum? I am new to drums and would love to learn how to increase my bass drum speed. If there are already some, you can recommend any.
I think you are right. If the fill pattern is 12 notes long, and he is using a 16th note subdivision, it has to be 3 beats. I don’t think he was explaining it the way he meant to, but maybe I missed something.
Hi, Sol. That is one of the Mapex V-Tour kits. You can check it out here: www.sweetwater.com/store/detail/SVT24-VW--mapex-saturn-v-tour-24-3-piece-shell-pack-white-marine Thanks for your interest! Mike Wuchter, Sweetwater Sales Engineer, (800) 222-4700 ext. 1789
I've been playing drums for over a decade now. This is a very great and helpful drum fills lesson. I have a major problem with my left hand when trying to apply drum fills while playing to songs in my church. My left hand is not as strong with double strokes as my right hand. It really sucks.
Some blushda action...I took a few lessons from my best friends dad then took off from there. Never learned rudiments till years later but realised i was playing paradidles and such just didn't know it was a thing lol.
Hey, Edward. Absolutely. Double strokes (and other rudiments) do get easier with practice time. I’ve found that the best way to practice double strokes is on a softer surface so that you have to work harder for the second stroke. Something like the RTOM Moongel pad works well: www.sweetwater.com/store/detail/WP7--rtom-moongel-workout-pad-7-inch Also, to get them more even, try inverting the double strokes. Instead of RRLLRRLL, try RLLRRLLRR. The cool thing about that is that it puts more focus on the second stroke of the double. Once you build up speed, you can tell that your double stroke roll will be more even. I hope this helps. I don't think they're that hard. I think it all just depends on the level that you're at. I am 14 and I can play these fills at his speed at ease. It's just practicing and working on it. Everything is easy if you play it slow enough.

Proof mastery is simplicity done to perfection!
I have been playing for 48 years. Nick knows what he is talking about. Back in the day, the Ghost note he is referring to was called the Grace note.
Nick, thank you so much. For years I played everything at once , instead of separate hand. You are a great instructor.

once you're comfortable with the rudiments it's easy to recognize the chops...

Thank you, Sweetwater and Nicky D. for this video.
These are great and explained simply. Do you ever have notation examples that can be printed up? Thanks again.
Seriously I do like your style, it’s kind of easier for me to follow. Keep it up

Nice tuning. This Saturn kit sounds so good.
Very clean. I like a lot. I like how you open up the flams on the last lick. ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐
Just call that first a 6 stroke roll! RLLRRL best rudiment I ever learned! So useful especially groove hat snare work.
Justin Burleson for me it's the worst rudiment I ever learnt, because it's THE rudiment that I come back to and do without realising. Haha.
Definitely not a 6 stroke roll guys. Flam drag (4 notes long not 6).
@@christopherreyes802 that is definitely a six stroke roll.

Easy solution, admit you aren't half as good as you think you are and suddenly it will become easy

Good lesson. 👏
Great explenation and demonstration!
Fantastic! Thank you for this gem of a video!
Nice lesson
Yea it's hard
Great video, great playing, great description of what you're doing. Makes it easy to learn. Thanks!
Phrasing that last fill as quarter notes I would consider more on the easy side, but phrasing them as he did as dotted 8th’s is pretty damn hard.
Love the sound of the Mapex Saturn Series!!!! Yea and the drummer guy aint too bad either!!!!
There's no nagging here , he speaks as fluently as he is playing and makes everything very clear in short time . 10 A
Amazing fills
Great tutorial!! Look forward to more...
That was a great lesson!
Tricky Nick back at it again!
I really like this guy, great video!

Turn that last 6 stroke roll into a double paradiddle and you can end up with a right hand to hit a cymbal. Nice fills.
Great job
Fabuloso‼️✌️🌻
Very cool, thanks. Just subbed and liked!
Superb
Great vid.. Thanks Nick. I came up with a new rudiment, the Papadopoulus. Flam - A, 2 E &.
Amazing
Thanks Nick! I definitely learned with these.. how big rudiments are to playing the drums.
There are only three beats in the second fill and the lick sounds like 32s. I’m not quite getting it. Does the first note restart on beat 4?
The answer is yes. Lightbulb!

Nick. Question for you. Isn't liner single strokes? Between the bass and anything on the upper deck? Or can anyone else fill me in please
Lance Hollum Linear just means that none of the notes are played in unison with each other, they’re all separate. It can be any rudiment.
Thank you bro
Very nice how to get your membership sir
Nick...nice... a copy of the dots, to go with such a fine tutorial, would be helpful for some cats man. Thanks.

What’s the snare model here?
Double stroke rolls are easy to play fast when using a pad or an electric kit, but i can't get much power with it - any tips?

Why didn't you just explain #1 as a 6-stroke roll? That kit is stunning too BTW!
Can someone please tell me why when using double bass some drummers just use a double bass pedal with the one bass drum and some use two bass drums?
Al3x J4ck50n it's just personal preference. Some drummers like double bass drums, & some drummers like double bass drum pedals
oh ok thanks
but it's little difficult to have the same sound on the 2 double bass,
another thing is that a double pedal can only produce as much volume as one bass drum, while two bass drums can produce about twice as much, especially if they're not well muffled
Some drummers also have two different sized bass drums, or tuned differently.
Damn glad i played snare in marching band in high school or none of this would make sense and would be difficult.
But very detailed teachin
The first fill is called a 6 stroke roll...
Nah dip
He said they are all based on rudiments....
Yeah there based off of rudiments
And the last one is called a flam drag. So what? I mean they are still fills
All good for jazz
Yes, they are easy when you play them slowly, but that way they are also not really the same thing
But once you make them muscle memory, you can -like he said- build up the speed.
I don't think they're that hard. I think it all just depends on the level that you're at. I am 14 and I can play these fills at his speed at ease. It's just practicing and working on it. Everything is easy if you play it slow enough.
