- Mushishi is almost like a meditative experience, the act of watching it always fills me with a sense of reflection - like I've gone down an incredible personal yet universal story. The twentieth episode, A Sea of Writings, is no different. In this instance of the 5-Hour Analysis Blitz - actually uploaded on time for once - we take a look at the structure and production behind this episode to figure out what meaning we can derive from it, and how its form equates to its function.
Side note I haven't seen the specials so the only instance I have re: Tanyuu is this episode.

One of my favorite anime of all time
This unique show proves that an anime doesn't need to have romance, action, comedy or something thrilling to be interesting to watch.
Mushishi is restful. It does not tell Western stories in that it does not necessarily rely on action or drama or even interpersonal strife to drive it - in fact in several cases, it feels very much more like a documentary that just happens to catch details and events in peoples' lives in passing. It tells spiritual stories and sometimes those stories sit behind events which even now are inexplicable to most of us - a waking coma, or autism, or early blindness.
Every episode is its own story showing how people's lives have changed from the mushi for better or worse. Most tales result in Ginko aiding people who been cursed by mushi or at least attempt to save their lives as not all episodes end in happiness. Mushishi is certainly mystical with its heavy atmosphere where music will often take dominance in the scene causing either relaxation or terror for its viewer. There's an abundance in creativity in this series such as man trying to catch a rainbow or a family who was born from plants. These types of stories bear resemblance to Osamu Tezuka's writing in his "Black Jack" series as Mushishi themes range from the preservation of nature & the importance of life.

This series is just beautiful. It is hard to explain how and why, but it just...exists. Like Mushi.
Fun Fact: I asked the director of Mushishi what his favorite episode was, and it is A Sea of Writings! He said his favorite parts of the anime were that he would help out with the animation side, and the toughest thing for him was making sure to translate characters expressions from the manga to the anime without losing that expression. He said at times he would re-read the manga and realize he misinterpreted/forgot an expression on the character, and it would upset him to realize it after the fact. If you ever get the chance to meet him, do it! It's amazing hearing how his mind works when he is directing.
If you made an entire series just analysing all the episodes of Mushishi like you did for this one, I would watch with rapt attention.

Im in the middle of a Mushishi rewatch, beginning of the second season right now. Glad to see analysis of it so far down the line.
Mushishi is a truly unique and wonderous anime. It is serene, mystical, and yet can still be compelling. I am very glad you covered this episode because it is one of the few that truly stick out to me. I enjoyed many of the stories but I remember this one vividly years later.
On a sort of funny side note, the show I reccomended for the 5 hour blitz was Hai to Gensou No Grimgar. Which is an especially slow paced anime most of the time. The anime I watched right after looking for more unique art and a slow pacing was Mushishi.

i finished the anime and spoiler
the fact that we never get a conclusion to her story, and see her travel with ginko just left me with a hole in my heart, especially when the story of this anime has ended over 13 years ago, so we will never get to see them travelling together.

It’s a very episodic anime
That’s just how mushishi is tbh
Ginkgo can do his best to help…and people either don’t listen or fall right back into the trap
It’s strangely refreshing yet can leave you wishing it was conclusive/happy ending each time but I feel like it gives it a sense of realism
It’s nice to have stories with “happy endings” but in reality life moves on and history can repeat itself
This is my absolute favorite anime of all time, alongside one of my absolute favorite episodes from the series. Replay Value, I don't know if you're planning to make more of these Mushishi Analysis videos, but thank you for this.

this episode stuck with me as well. though id feel what makes it great is simply the metaphor of words being a symptom of ailment and when put to paper is a sort of slow process of healing. its very imaginative episode, bugs being used primarily as the vehicle of what is very kafkaesque display of dealing with something alien/foreign, that has such a great structure and makes mushishi such a memorable series.

Been watching Mushishi. While it might not be my favorite, I've definitely never seen anything like it. This anime makes me feel emotions that do not exist.
What a great analysis of my favorite anime. I can go back and rewatch it multiple times and find new meanings. It is unlike any other anime out there. All of its stories are unique and in the end, it stirs your emotions, resulting you to self-reflect. It is truly a masterpiece.

mushishi is a raw experience and i think the episodic and fantasy elements are only needed to have these raw experiences come up so many times without feeling cheap or over used
Mushishi is such a great show...only have a few episodes left before I'm done with it and I've had it on hold for ages because I like that feeling that you can always come back to it at any time with it's great atmosphere and episodic nature

Is this about OG Mushishi or Mushishi Zoku Shou? I haven't seen the first and only half of the second and this show has encouraged me to rewatch.
This episode is in the first season. But anime remains the same quality thorough out the seasons. It amazing.

I think of this episode in particular as a metaphor for disabilities.
Tanyuu has lived all her life unable to walk because of the Mushi, no matter how much she writes, there is a chance that in her life time she won't be able to walk again, passing the curse down her line. All the people around her always told her tales that coulored the Mushi's and by extension her condition as something evil, unnatural that must be dealt with, her caretaker, while she loves her, feels sorry for her since the moment she was born and is the one treating her with the most pitty... Not Ginko
Ginko has always told her stories about people living with their Mushi's and of quorky harmless ones.
While he doesn't promises Tanyuu that she will walk he does make her see her condition in a different light, not as something that must be cured, but something she must learn to live with.
They're not something for her to fear or hate but rather to comprehend, she may not live a normal life, but she can live, she can be of use for others in her own unique way, her house being a literal library of Mushis
It can be completely unintentional and is just me reading too much though
