Thanks for a really helpful video. I am sure most beginners like me are filled with dread when it comes to pruning . This helped me a lot by clarifying some of the concepts to employ. I might even pluck up the courage to get the bonsai shears out and study some of my young trees. Thanks again 👍🏻✂️🌲
Thank you for these videos! I am brand new to Bonsai and am trying to learn as much as I can. I just got a teeny tiny Chinese Elm this week. So far, all I can do is stare at it... lol... no CLUE what to do with it, or even if I am supposed to do anything to it yet. 🤪 I am excited to watch it grow though. Hopefully. If I don't end up killing it. 😬
@@grobonsai thanks! I'm a bit scared I've killed it already. I reported it into another pot in order to get it out of the yucky nursery soil it arrived in and within a day the leaves turned all curled.and crispy and dry and began to fall off. 😔
Thank you for this video, there were some very useful tips in it. It really helped me. Nevertheless there were too many cuts and zooms in the video for my liking. If you would do less of those your video would be perfect. Overall still a good video which made everything very clear. Thank you
Fantastic video . Really clear, interesting and encouraging. That's a really beautiful tree with so much character to it. Looking forward to seeing it develope.
Hi there, I just did my very first trim on my bonsai tree ( Chinese elm ) very scary at first but I was happy with the result. Good tip on how to develop the lower branches. As always great tips keep up the good work 👍
I recommend getting a ficus from a reputable seller, and giving it a go! To start with, all you need to focus on is keeping a tree in a pot alive. You will encounter questions as you go, and that’s part of the fun.
Some sound advice but I need to lay down after that. The editing is wild. I know we both like ugly trees but you may think about doing an air layer just above the second branch to build something with great taper in a couple of years.
My bonsai lost its leaves at the top. He is now recovering but it’s growing at the bottom to the sides at first. The crown is still very bald. Do I have to cut the braches at the bottom to get it more green at the top? they’re getting very big and growing sideways
Can anyone explain what he meant by cutting the divisions of threes back to twos? I'm not sure exactly what that would look like. Like if I branch branches off into 3 cut one off?
Where one branch divides into three, prune one to leave two behind. Or where there are two shoots coming from the same place. I’ll try make a quick video or post a diagram to make it clearer.
Hello, if there are 8-9 shoots at the top of the tree, will I have to prune and leave just a few to get a new leader to create a taper? Or should I just leave it and will a new leader will form by it self from the 8-9 shoots at the top of the tree.
Pick the shoot that is the best compromise between strength (thickness) and angle. That’s your trunk leader. Pick one or two shoots as side branches, cut them to length. Remove the rest
There are several times that are good, it depends mostly on the species of tree? Generally, spring before new buds open, early summer once growth has become mature, and autumn/fall are good times, but there are exceptions
I can't imagine a beginner buys a tree like this with no knowledge of all the stuff you need to know to get here. But I guess there's always someone...

Always very clearly explained and well put together Darren.
I sense you were having trauma flashbacks to the previous video round the 4:00 mark 😂
Haha so true, thanks Jason
Nice tree you have there. Lovely movement in the trunk. Will look forward to seeing the progression on this.

I kept waiting to hear you say what time of year for the species was the most important thing before you prune. That's why I came here haha
Generally before spring growth, early to mid summer, and fall are the best times. But! There is variation among species !
Great info, and well explained in a short video. Thanks for jamming lots of value into 10 minutes. New follower here!
Great tips! And that tree has such a fantastic trunk. 🌳👍🏻
Thanks Dave

Looking forward to watching the growth progress.
Good to have you onboard Laurie, I’ll share each step
Great bones on that tree!
Thanks 👍
Thanks! Much better for editing! Use b-roll and voice over so it's not so jarring. What are the little patches on the tree for?

I’ve been watching this video for four minutes and still no clue how and where to cut the branches!
I can’t tell you that because I can’t see your tree
Can you keep a bonsai indoors all year round and how often do you keep trimming it in 21 degrees all year round inside
Hi Daren. Just starting to investigate this passion. PLease can you advise times to prune. can you prune at any time or only specific seasons ? Thanks

When did the issue start? Are the upper branches growing slowly, or not producing any buds?
Stay strong
Thanks Trevor, take care also

At what time of the year is it ok to prune a bonsai?

I see you keep using a spherical rather than straight recessed branch cutter. Is this what is generally preferred?
I like it because it is easy to get a nice angle no matter what the branch shape, easy to clean the cut after.
How is the moss grown so well.
I have a Short vid explaining how I cultivate moss. Also I find moss loves akadama bonsai soil
,straight down the line , no nonsense good advice !! Liked it 👍

So, what is the most appropriate time to prune it?
Hi I’m afraid I don’t know the species or tropicals, sorry

Is it normal for all your leaves to fall off ?
Only for deciduous species in autumn

7:46 on the couch high in Netherlands thinking what the hell is this guy doing to this tree
Snip snip snip
Can you not use this mode of zooming in and out unnecessarily! It’s very distracting and disorientating!
Sorry, if time allows I intend to post an extended version with more details and less editing
