- Tubalcain shows how to LACE (splice) a lathe belt. He's applying Clipper belt hooks using a vise held belt splicer. Belts for hit & miss engines are also done by this ancient method.
Hiya Mr. Pete
I have been watching your videos for the last few days, and wish to thank you for taking the time and effort to provide all of the information that you do. As a home machinist, I don't have the opportunity to learn from the "guys in the shop", and really value your experience and expertise. I am in your debt!
Thanks Again & Best Regards,
Jon
My lathe uses modern synthetic belts, however, I thank you for showing us all how to do this, as I would never have know, I remember my grandmothers singer sewing machine using a leather belt with one staple holding it together, i just assumed it came like that, Thanks again and PLEASE keep them coming, I look every day to see if you have any new ones to show us
Best Regards
My 9" had to settle for a hand applied set of laces. I couldn't justify purchasing a belt splicing fixture for the one belt on it. The first one my Dad made lasted 20 years and since I just finished mine it will probably out live me.
Great explanation of how to install the clips. Thanks for sharing.
You are done for life
THANK YOU. I've been trying to figure out how to join my belts. The last method I tried was to cut, bend and sharped each little lacing hook and then press it into the belt hand. Needless to say it took an hour to do one side. Thanks again.
Thanks for your interest.
I have never spliced a rubber one.
Thanks for yet another great video! This is going to be real handy after I get my Grandfather's Atlas lathe and begin restoring it next weekend! Thankfully he has all the splicing gear as well!
Thank you for reminding me we have one of these tools in the ol farm shop for the hay bailer that's not used anymore. I've been wondering how I was gonna relace my belt.
Great work there Sir. Tom
👍
Mr. Cain... Thanks again for sharing your extensive expertise graciously. In case you are not aware, you are very entertaining whist educating! A.

Thanks.
What a coincidence. I have completed 2 out of 3 parts of my reamer series--coming soon.
@PTESSequip Thanks for your interest. No--cannot do that. Perhaps you have a local machine shop that can do that.
How do you know when the belt has the correct tension?
I always wanted to know how they fitted them clips. Nice vid yet again.
i wish i knew half as much as you do, thank you sir. please keep posting anything you can. 5 stars from your friends here in seattle. bob and vangie.
We use these at work on rubber and other types of belting. We also use a larger type hand cranked machine.
Thanks for sharing, I just obtained an old fairbanks lathe and the belt was broken, I couldn’t even remember the names of the hooks 😂
Thanks again for the video
Was wondering how to do that! Thanks!
Mike
One word of advice....use 1 or 2 fewer hooks to allow more free space on the ends of the splice. Once a hook tears out, that spot is going to be weaker and the stress will concentrate there. I have spiced numerous leather and rubber belts and this holds true for both. If your belt has a guide slot or bars, bevel the trailing end also. Anyone wanting belts spliced can message me. If I have or can get hooks for your application, I will quote a price + you cover shipping both ways.
I knew you would have a video for this!!
I just got the larger cutter brand tool with the 2 poles coming out of it. (Poles are missing). I’ll certainly use it for making belts for my lathes but I also think I may make a leather bag. Really cool tool.
Very Informative Lyle......now to find some clips and the machine.....wondering if there is a service for this, I am new to South Bend, wondering what side of belt goes against the pulley......slick hair side or the rough side? Cheers, Paul down in Orlando
@12Marmon Well then, maybe you should do a video response to cover the areas not mentioned, instead of whining about what he doesn't show. I sure don'y see any machine shop tips on your video page, in fact I don't see anything at all.
I've got all the equipment to do this, and will have to when I get my grandfathers Atlas lathe next weekend, but I wanted a good video. I knew that if I watched it and it was by MrPete222, I would learn what I needed to know. Thanks again Tubalcain!
Superb instructional. Thanks!
I love these videos
I use an auto serpentine belt and splice it with a shoelace.
It lasts for a few years until the hole pulls out and needs to be redone.
fantastic video. thank you for sharing!
@CCasket
@CCasket I do have several on the LOGAN. Search my videos.
Helps us LOGAN lathe owners as well ;) Ty Mr.cain.
Where do you buy the lathe splicer parts?
Good info, I'll be making a belt for my ATW lathe soon.
Don't let Smokey watch this though...
How about putting a nylon core leather belt on? You will never have to change it again.
Mr.Pete my belt just broke on my south bend 16. could i get you to make me a replacement? i do not have the clipper tool :(
Diesel Ramcharger NO-, BUT YOU CAN BUY A BELT ON EBAY
mrpete222 Thanks! they are more available than i had feared.

Was wondering how to do that! Thanks!
