Engineering knits is a place for people who enjoy all kinds of vintage and antique crafts - from sewing to knitting, crochet to embroidery I like to try it all. I definitely have a preference for historical fibre crafts, and it is my dream to one day make an entire outfit from sheep to sweater. I hope you enjoy watching me and my favorite companion, Nutella, struggle through some fascinating projects!
You don't get it. 'Gunnesax' is a play on 'gunny snacks.' Gunny sacks are from the not-so-far past. Look it up. If you don't understand that, you don't undestand the context or the aesthetic. It shows in your dess. It's not Gunnesax.
Amy WOW! You're comment comes off as Very Condescending. Lighten - Up!! It's a beautiful make regardless of what the correct pronunciation is.
Wow you really showed her!
Wow, quite an expert here. I'd love to see your version of the #gunnesaxoween dress - care to link the video or even just a photo of the final dress?
It is supposed to be inspired by, not a copy. Lighten up, it is a Halloween dress.
There’s no need to be mean to people who are just creating and having fun… the play on gunny sacks might have been more than one joke, I doubt you were there when they decided on the brand. They literally used burlap in early dresses. But also, Marilyn Monroe wore a potato/ ‘gunny’ sack in 1951 as a statement to show that she was beautiful no matter what she wore. A sentiment that applies here also; the dress is lovely, but the wearer more so.
It looks amazing! But your makeshift pattern weights stole the show 😂
My eldest grandson Jason at age 7 soon after October 1, 2021 said to his parents that he wants to help me decorate the outside of my home for Hallowe'en. It is a mystery to me why he said that. Inspires me to have more fun in the month of October most after going through a lot. Making myself a dress to wear when answering my door to trick or treaters that is made with the spookiest looking fabric I can find while it is only cut like the wedding dress I wore in the early 1970's sounds like a lot of fun.
those of us wearing it in the 70's called it Gunney Sax
I’m mildly shocked to hear you’re shopping for lace, i’m glad you don’t feel obligated to make your own lace just because you usually do
LOVE LOVE LOVE!
I was skeptical at first... you showed the bodice and I was like, "Oh, it's perfect! Don't add the skirt" and then the skirt and I was all "Yes! Lovely! Don't add the ruffle" and then the ruffle and I was drooling and you see what kind of weirdo I am, right?
Honestly, *such* a great design. You nailed it 🖤🧡💛🖤
Nutella going crazy in the background is my permanent mood. I love this fabric so much!!!
Your version looks amazing! And the reveal at the spooky house was so worth it 💚🎃
I'm happy you were able to film the final at the house at end! Getting to do something through anxiety can be hard and it was so satisfying to see the final look in front of such a gorgeous home!
It is pronounced 'gunny sacks'. I know because I am old enough to have worn more than one and was surrounded by other girls wearing them too.
I missed this whole fashion. 😓 Any chance you know where to get patterns or pics at the very least?
@@simonesmit6708 there are a ton of patterns on ebay and lots of pics on the internet. The designer was Jessica McClintock who passed away last March.
@@karink6974 thank you. I'll have to take alook around.
I also remember those dresses. They were so lovely. I didn't have the figure to pull off wearing one, so I never had one.
There are a lot of them for sale on Ebay and Etsy at incredible prices (if you remember the original Gunne Sax era especially). The style makes me think of my mom in the 70's because it was sort of hippie and sort of lady-like.
I loved the dog treat pattern weights, we have a million of those hidden under our couches at home from our puppies!
Was the only one to grin as the furbaby rolled and snorted on the couch behind you? 😆
Ooo, your vintage machine and ruffles attachment, so fun to watch!
Fantastic! I remember having some Gunne Sax ( that’s gun-e) dresses back in the ‘70’s!
I wore a few Gunne Sax (a play on gunnysacks) that were handed down from my cousin well into the 80s. I LOVED them! I really like the fabrics you chose, and the final dress is spooktacular!!
The house was perfect. A+ reveal, particularly with overcoming social anxiety. I’m a fellow sufferer.
I had one of those dresses back in 1973 and later on in that decade I got my absolute favorite pair of Victorian ankle boots which to this day were my absolute favorite pair of boots I have ever owned , still on the quest of finding a pair like them. Real leather lace up 1 1/2 to 1 3/4 inch kitten heel. I own 4 pair of that style of leather boots and still none as comfy as those were! 😭
Try American Duchess. They make wonderful high quality reproductions. Very tiny company owned by women.
I also had a pair of Victorian style lace-up boot that I wore until they fell apart. At one point I decided I had to get rid of them but then I retrieved them from the bin and wore them another year or so!
I love that style. I was in my 20s in the 1970s, loved that style.
I always said Gun E sack...
Love it! The only problem is I would want to wear it year round! So cute!
That ruffles was really neat
A long long time ago (maybe 1977?), I made this type of dress for my high school graduation, I didn't know you should always wash fabric before making it into your wonderful creations. My body was dyed blue by the end of the evening. It was also the first dress I made without a pattern, I just used rectangles of the right size. Now I know this is common construction method from the pass. Wish I knew about underarm gussets as the dress would of been easier to wear.
It’s gunny sacks, which was basically a burlap bag. I used to go to their outlet in San Francisco - so much cool stuff! That house is fantastic! Your dress turned out lovely.
Wow that gathers beautifully better than new ones
Wow I love that print. It’s perfect for your dress, turned out beautifully!
So glad this popped up in my recommended feed!! I've wanted a Gunne Sax dress for, like, 15 years! But I would never have fit in a vintage one, or been able to afford it. Now I have some sewing skills and can make myself one eventually!
It's giving off Edwardian Ms. Frizzle vibes, LOVE IT
I hope you and Rachel Maksy are friends because you two would get along swimmingly.
The dress is awesome! My favorite part is when you're talking about how much you love it :)
We didn't wear the original Gunne Sax but growing up in the 1970s I remember me and my mum wearing a who range of dresses inspired by the style.
I ABSOLUTELY LOVE THIS! also…that look you give at 11:25 mark 100% relatable when I’m in public too. Thank you for always sharing your creativity with us. You’re one of my favorites to watch.
I love the fabric choice, and wow that bodice would be amazing as a jacket!
I love how you sketch and paint your designs first!! Love watching your podcasts, as you can see I’ve been binge watching them lately lol
Sue 😊
Dog bone pattern weights= brilliant.
Gunne Sax, and Halloween? YES PLEASE!
Love the Gunny Sak styles... I was around when they were first popular but I didn't get to wear they... always so feminine... yours is lovely... love your puppy... we have a tri color... they are the best... great challenge... fun to see the beautiful style... blessings
good on you for conquering your anxiety! the house made the reveal feel very spooky vintage and I loved it. the dress is lovely! I'm tempted my make my own
So glad the algorithm gifted me with this video! The dress looks amazing and I can't wait to go through the rest of your videos
Yep like others said it is "Gunny Saks" Gunne Sax.. I loved these dresses when I was a kid and teen. I am so old. It was so hard to watch and hear it called a Gun Sacks dress. I know picky picky. But I enjoy your videos so much and ai of be how this dress came out
I think my wedding dress from the 1st marriage in 1977 was a Gunne Sax. I miss the '70s.
This dress is AMAZING and that house was the perfect backdrop.
(Your videos are always my favorite...I enjoy hearing your thought process and seeing your creative process. Your projects are so beautiful!)
Watching this a year later, but I just have to say how great your dress looks! That is so cute and I love how you blocked the black verses the pattern. Perfect setting for a reveal as well.
You were using pieces of bones as weights when cutting out your pattern! A good act for the season. I caught that!
This is Lovely and spooky at the same time! The black lace sleeves are perfect, as is the black ruffle at the bottom. Well done! I love watching you use the ruffler. A vintage machine that works well is a real treat!
Your dog is adorable. Also so excited to see this dress!
I love how your dress turned out. THE fabrics you chose were perfect. Thank you for sharing.
I was fortunate enough to find several of them in my local thrift store back in the 90’s! They were my go to dresses for just about everything! I even have a picture of me curled up on the couch in one with my patchwork blanket!
Well done, both the dress, which is wonderfull, and filming tour reveal shots! You looked nervous but determined, and beautifully spoopy.
WOW. I'm so in love with the fabric patterns choice and color palette. It's SO good!
Your dress came out beautiful! I think the lace sleeves were a great decision that even Jessica McClintock herself would have loved. Great job!
Well done! I wore Gunne Sax when they were big, the spooky re-work is fabulous. Those lace sleeves are really lovely.
Wow it look amazing! ❤️
That house was really perfect for the reveal!
U r definitely Germanic like my husband. First mistake I make I would give up. I've been watching ur site. So much history and ur energy to go thru over and over and... Yup, definitely Germanic, my favorite character I admire.
From start to finish I really enjoyed your design and execution of this project. The drawing at the begin was wonderful! So many parts of this video to enjoy, thank you!
And the ruffler.. LOL what a fun attachment!
I love the dog bones as pattern weights 😂☠️
That ruffler attachment was very cool. And I loved the noises your dog was making when you were both up on the couch. But, wow, did I cringe when you cut right into the tissue. Not THAT is a spooky horror story for me. LOL! I can't NOT trace a pattern. It gives me too much anxiety.
WOW! Stunning! Love the fabric, dress pattern, your hair & make-up.
This dress is the absolute cutest!!! If I wore dresses this would be it. It would have been nice to overlay the lace on the black portions of the bodice to make it a bit fancier.
You were totally right. That house is perfect!!! Wish I could live somewhere like that.
Oh my gosh, I LOVE this! The bodice alone almost made me jelly, amazing job, you look bomb!
Sometimes its really satisfying to just make something quickly and not worry too much about perfection.
Great, fun collab. As others have said, the pronunciation is gunny sacks. Historic gunny sacks were made of burlap and used for transporting produce--think potatoes--so they were sometimes called potato sacks. Three legged races used them, so the races were sometimes called potato races (at least in my neighborhood). It was fairly common that flour sacks were used as yardage, but only the poorest of the poor wore gunny sacks. I had a halloween costume made from them. The brand, Gunne Sax, would I think, be a tongue-in-cheek reference to that genre/esthetic of garment making. Like opposite day for clothing.
I love your pattern weights!
Years ago (1980s) I had a Gunne Sax dress. It was a reddish dark brown with cream colored lacings and ribbon on it. I wore it to my sister's boyfriend's parent's house near Christmas time with black victorian style granny shoes. Her boyfriend got a kick out of my dress and said I looked like a victorian porcelain doll. I used to wear it with a cameo pin my friend's Great Grandfather gave me. I still have the pin, but alas, the dress is long gone.
This is such a fun dress! The sleeves look great and I love your fabric choices.
Absolutely fabulous, lacey sleeves are great, love it, so enjoyed watching this. 😍💕
Love the dress love the fabric choices and love the overall look. Amazing job love 💕
Thank You so much! I am going to play with the ruffler attachment to my sewing machine now. You are awesome.
Your dress turned out so great! I love the print you found.
Oh my god, you remind me so much of Claire from Outlander in those last shots! Stunning dress and great spooky house ;)
Definitely here for all Nutella approvals she's so cute 😍 and your dress looks amazing! You did a fantastic job and I love watching your channel, thank you for all your hard work putting these videos together.
😆😆😆💖Love your very creative pattern weights! Your project turned out great 👍. I have an idea 💡 POCKETS!
I love your artwork
Weird coincidence, I tried to do this exact thing last autumn, a Halloween Gunne Sax style dress. But I totally messed up the bodice and just pushed it aside. I should really pull that out and give it another go. I love your version!
What an absolutely enchanting dress! I adore the lace sleeves and beautiful buttons. I've been sewing yards of lace on the hem of my Gunnesaxoween dress as I watched. The house was such a fantastic backdrop!
your fabric choices are amazing!! I especially love the lace sleeves :) also glad you were able to overcome your social anxiety and get the reveal video in front of that beautiful spooky mansion!
Perfect fabric! It's very flattering on you.
Loved the variety of pattern weights used XD Lovely fabric choice, and the full piece looks so good!
I need that ruffle foot. Super cool.
Love the dress, both the model and your fabric choices!
Your dress is gorgeous, and love the style and theme is amazing
It is indeed Gunny Sacks, but you are too young to know that :) That ruffler is AWESOME. What a cool house. And your dress has a very 40's look on you, really fun. Thanks for sharing :)
Soo gorgeous and OH MY GOD THE SLEEVES
those pattern weights tho. this came out amazing!
How beautiful! You make me want to learn more about sewing. I can knit all day long but the mere thought of sewing garments makes me break out in a cold sweat. But imo, everyone needs a cottagecore Halloween dress? Gotta face my fears, I guess.
Start with simple shapes and flat weave fabrics. Nothing too lightweight as it frays easily. Loose fitting with adjustable ties or belts are forgiving of early mistakes. Bernadette Banner has good tutorials on seam finishes and construction. ;)
Gorgeous dress I love it. I bought that fabric for a Halloween dress earlier this month. It's so pretty!
Your dress looks terrific! Enjoy wearing it!
This is so cute!! 😊😊 I love the fabric choices and the color blocking! I was wanting to do a different style Gunne Sax imitation dress, but I do have that pattern sooo... Yay another project added to the backlog 😁
The dress is super cute, well done!
Your dress kooks fabulous…and I’m so glad you got to reveal it in the special place you wanted…🥰🇦🇺
OMGosh the dress came out super cute!

That lipstick looks so good on you!
Fang-tastic job! It's so pretty!
Elegantly spooky!
Came for the sewing. Stayed for the dog.
Great job. What a beautiful dog!
Very cool!
I think the dress is awesome! Great job!
