Well they did a good job at portraying a good person within Ginger. The mistake in keeping her messed up close friends made it relatable for some people. Im not saying Ginger was perfect but she was very forgiving of others. Ginger being the person she is and having a supporting mom with genuine advise made it more relatable for me. As i got older i learned to forgive, but to stay away from the people that think they can step all over me.

Courtney was never the villain. It was Miranda. Courtney was even a better friend than Dodie. So it was heartbreaking when she became the outcast in highschool and her family lost her money. She deserved better because she was actually a good person. She deserves a spinoff. Because I think they were setting Courtney up for a new character growth arc.
Miranda on the other hand was scheming and vindictive. Though there were a few redeeming scenes like when she comforted Ginger about Sasha in bandcamp, and telling Darren that she felt bad ditching Courtney for their date.

About Miranda, she does have some level of dimension. If you notice, her Dad seems to be very stern and job oriented. Not caring about Miranda and putting her through shit like shes the rest of her peers. You wouldn't know that person is her father until she actually called him Dad a few times and seemed upset over him taking his job way too seriously to the point of screwing with her plans or putting her through the rut like everyone else.
Maybe one of the reasons why she was attached to courtney. Maybe Courtney made her feel less alone and appreciated?

I moved abroad 2 years ago & was feeling homesick & I rewatched all 3 seasons in my 1st year to cope w the decision of leaving behind old friends & family to start a new life somewhere else. The show inspired me to get a tattoo of some lyrics of the theme song. "Till further notice, I'm in between. From where I'm standing, my grass is green". But yea you got a new subbie. I will say with the Darren and Ginger relationship that they were pretty young when they first started dating and young teens tend to be not the best in relationships. Given that the finale is 10-15 years in the future and they seemed like pretty well adjusted teens already, It’s not really that unbelievable that they would start dating again after they matured into adulthood. Also with Dodie, I’ve had experiences with people like that in middle school and High School. After they matured a lot, we actually became genuinely good friends. This could have happened to her in her adulthood.

      Agree
I like Ginger and Darren as a couple
I just think they are too young and inmature for undestend and have enough maturity for a steady relationship, teenage relationships rarely works and keeps steady, this show is realistic soo a relationship between young teens would not work obviously, thats why they married in the future with enough maturity for know about true love and relationships, if you see the last episode Darren started to miss her, is pretty ovious that in the future they are going to end up together, not because of Nickelodeon cliches as the gal say in the video, not every Nickelodeon Shows have bestfriends end up together just the sitcoms made by the feet guy, the cartoons not at all, Arnold and Helga are not even bestfriends at all, in my headcanon Rocko stay single, im not assume that he end up with Sheila that girl just appear in one episode and there are no hints that they are a couple as people say, she even not appear in the 2019 movie, also Sheila is not canon in the comics, in the comic Rocko ends up with Melva, his crush of all time, Sponge Bob and Sandy are not even a couple, SpongeBob is asexual (i like ship anyways) Jenny and Brad dont even end up together, the creator say that she and Sheldon are end game (eww i hate it, but is the sad true), Tommy and Kimmy are not together at the end of all grown up at all, just a little hint of a atracction at the end of the TP + KF episode but they never shown affection after that again, Dog from CatDog likes one of the bullies, the girl of that crew not a bestfriend,Eliza like Shane and their feelings are mutual but is not pretty clear if they end up together or not and the most sad case for me is Ickis and Oblina from A!RM (my OTP of all time ❤) they should be together but sadly is probably that Ickis would end up with Dizzle (eww i hate her and the ship with Icky it seems toxic) and Oblina with Snorch (eww other toxic and boring couple) or Oblina and Krumm, i prefer them as friends, Krumm never shown any romantic affection towards her even in the she likes me episode he seems awkward and afraid because he think Oblina likes him, soo i think Ickis should be with Oblina ❤ Nickelodeon cartoons not always make friends end up together, soo i think Ginger and Darren deserves a second chance to be happy together as adults, is kinda of hipocresy too, Orion is a really close friend to Ginger too, he almost take Darren role in the third season .

I would have loved to see Ginger and Dodie's friendship completely dissolve during the series and for Courtney to become Ginger's trusted friend Dodie always pretended to be. The show handled so many other mature subjects really well it's a shame they didn't tackle the issue of friendships cooling or breaking up as you age.
As for Ginger and Darren, I'm glad they ended up together. Darren's jerky jock phase seemed just like that, a phase. Some people do become crueler and nastier during high school because it's treated as such a high-stakes time in life, but hopefully they mature out of it. And to me, Orion was part of a commonly-used plot device I can't stand, the "Our main couple breaks up to each date better respective matches when, even during the breaking up scene, we can sense their eventual reunion and/or marriage coming from a mile away". Sure, Orion could have been a genuinely better fit for Ginger, but he just came across as a writers' tool rather than a character created out of wanting her to truly move on from Darren.

Great review. It’s been at least a decade since I’ve watched this show and I must say, I was too young when it was on the air to really enjoy the writing and characters. I’m honestly surprised that a show dealing with so many adult themes would even be on Nick. I’m no stranger to the older shows of the 90’s like Ren and Stimpy, but watching this really changed my perception of it. I might have to take a look again when I get a chance. The review itself was well written and engaging, and the clip usage was well thought out. If I could make some suggestions, I’d say maybe add music throughout it, just to break up the white noise and keep people from potentially losing attention from lack of audio stimulation. I’d also say if you could, maintaining more eye contact with the camera would allow the viewer to feel more involved, like it’s a conversation vs watching you read off a script. Of course it’s your channel, do as you will, but you definitely deserve an audience. Keep up the work and the clout will follow.

I'm getting used to looking at the camera more, but that will just take time, I've been making videos for a year and I still struggle with that haha. I did do a couple takes of this and decided it was the best one. My priority after months of research was that people heard what I thought and that I expressed myself succinctly and correctly, more than anything. I actually wrote this whole essay down like a school paper before I did the recording. Thanks so much for your feedback again, and I really appreciate your kind words :)

This was the first video that i’ve seen of yours kiki and i’ve got to say this really well made. I enjoyed your analysis on the characters, the creators of the show and just the show overall mainly because of how well it was presented. I could definately see the effort you’ve put into not just analayzing but putting your thoughts into words in order to address your opinion on this cartoon. I really enjoyed how clear you have illustarted your points to the viewer and i will look forward to watching more video essays from you like these and I will check out your other content. One thing i think i should point out is you seem camera shy and that’s okay, it will take time for you to get used to being filmed. I’m saying this because i feel like as a viewer, it’s always nice to see youtubers and potential youtubers be able to display more of their personality into the video. Don’t worry, you’ll get there! I want to thank you for taking the time and effort into making this video essay and I’ll be sure to stick around!

Thanks for the feedback Jojo! I am still getting used to being on camera after a year of trying to upload regularly. I guess my struggle with the camera in this video comes from the fact that I wrote a literal essay for this and was reading it off. Never was that good at memorization haha

    • @itsjojo03
      @itsjojo03 6 лет назад +1

offbeat kiki offbeat kiki You’re always welcome! Don’t say that it was a struggle because you wrote an actual essay. It’s actually a really good way to pan out what you need to say in the video. I would suggest if you want, you can write the essay then and you don’t memorize but note down imp points using flashcards or stick notes and hopefully it will help and your message will come out more naturally. I hope this helps you out and this is just a suggestion, of course you don’t need to do it if you don’t feel like it would suit you. Also, public speaking is one of my strengths i would say and i’m passionate about it. This has helped me out a lot and you could always rehearse what you need to say in front of a friend or the mirror works just fine. I look forward to seeing more videos similar to this as i believe you have so much potential, just take your time and just relax, you’re already doing really well! Keep up the great work

You know I'm surprised that by the end of season 2 or when season 3 rolled around, that Courtney didn't dump Miranda and become best friends with Macy and Ginger, leaving Dodie to become closer to Miranda and Mypsie (not sure if that's how her name is spelled) because it seems like Courtney did a whole lot of bonding with and standing up for Ginger and Macy (mostly GInger), especially during the episode where Macy, Miranda, Dodie, and mypsie all tried to break up Ginger and Darren. Although if I'm tbh, Darren and Ginger were practically done with when Darren started acting like a jerk but their relationship could have worked out if Ginger just put Dodie in her place and/or dumped her as a friend. And maybe by the end of season 3 or at least by the time Ginger's mom was engaged or something, Ginger and Dodie could've at least been on better terms. Maybe not quite best friends like before, but they could've been on the road to repairing their friendship.

@@offbeatkiki Exactly! And I kinda wished we could've seen more development for Miranda as a character like you said as well because that could've added a lot of tension to not just to her friendship with Courtney but to Ginger and Dodie's as well and possibly add onto Darren and Ginger's relationship. Though the only thing I don't see Dodie doing is actually full on bulllying Ginger and Macy (if things had happened this way), at least not without Miranda and Mypsie doing some pushing.

Thank you for reminding me about your review, Kiki. I had belief that it would be worth the wait. As someone who discovered how intriguing this show really was nearly four years ago, it pleases me how it is slowly getting more and more well-deserved attention. It does a VERY great job at getting emotions out of me, both positive and negative. If you'd like to know my favorite character and episode, it's Ginger herself and "Hello Stranger" respectively. Also, if you want to hear more about the show here on RUclips, I STRONGLY recommend the "We're In Between" podcast on the channel Old School Lane, containing episode recaps, and interviews with cast and crew members (including the creator herself).
Oh, and to correct you on something, "Carl and Maude" is the second episode, not the third one.

Something I love about this show is that you can see why every character is the way they are. You get glimpses of their home life, their peers, and other influences that make them who they are. Dodi is awful, but with a mother like hers who can blame her? Even the clothing and settings tell a story to the audience. The animation does too, with its earthy tones and weird character design (which I’ve always loved). Even though it’s essentially a drama it feels close to home.

I think the show would have done better and been more widely remembered if they had gone with a different art style. The purposeful "Ugly-Cute" style of Klasky-Csupo works for goofy comedy/kiddie shows like Rugrats and The Wild Thornberrys. But I think that style actively turned away the demographic that Ginger was clearly made for (ie young girls and teenagers). Ginger was airing when I was a pre-teen; and the art style turned me off of watching it for a long time. And, as a kid, I really HATED the gross out side plots with Carl and felt like they were only put there so there would be something for young boys to get out of the show.
Don't get me wrong, I'm not saying that the characters should have all looked like little Barbie dolls so that little girls would be drawn to them. I just think the ugly style was distracting a lot of the time. Like, how are you supposed to know that Courtney and Miranda are "prettier" than Ginger and her friends when EVERY character in that show looks like a weird, lumpy mess? Since every character is equally weird looking, your only cue that someone is a homely nerd is that they're wearing glasses or headgear or frumpy clothes or other stereotypical "nerdy" things.
It's still a good show. But the art style actively worked against it and that's just a shame. For that reason alone, I think Ginger would benefit from a reboot

The art style never really bothered me. I think it's because I watched the wild thornberrys, so I was used to seeing preteen/teenage girls in that art style already. As told by Ginger actually started right after that show ended and it seemed like they were easing into that type of stuff.

I don't think I want a reboot but sequel or spin-off series maybe about Ginger being a grown adult raising her daughter and it can show Sophia (what voice actress named Ginger's daughter) older maybe around Ginger's age during the show going through life
the A plot can be about Ginger and B plot about Sophia and they switch it from time to time where Ginder has the B plot and Sophia has the A plot
I imagine it being kind of like Raven's Home or something where she is still title/main character but it focuses a lot on her kids.
maybe it can be called Ginger's Stories

Just my opinion … but as I got older … I realized that the characters who are deemed the worst, were actually really insecure and didn’t have the greatest coping mechanisms or best examples to help them change.
Not to justify their irrational behavior, but to dig deep psychologically on why they were deemed to be the worst.
All in all, I appreciate the effort you put into explaining the character analysis.

My roommates and I watched the whole series a bit ago, I'd never seen it. The one where Ginger wrote the poem that made everyone concerned that she was severely depressed was seriously one of the best episodes of any animated show that I've ever seen.
If you watch in chronological order, there is kind of a twilight zone effect between episodes. Sure there are callbacks and it definitely exists in one time line; however, the way that some characters act between episodes is baffling. I was left with my head spinning whenever we watched 2-3 in a row, and it wasn't necessarily a bad experience. It kept me hooked.
I ended up shouting at most of the characters (especially DODI) because of their ridiculous behavior. This seemed to happen more and more towards the end, where the tone changes as they begin highschool and start dealing more with friendships and relationships that are actually very toxic. It seems to me that Carl and Hoodsie are the only authentic, redeemable characters (most of the time)
Overall this show is incredibly well written. I look forward to rewatching it and hope more people are exposed to it in the future. Great video!

It was realistic, teenegers relationships rarely works but when we get older we realized that we truly loves that person, we are enough mature for realize what true love is, Darren even miss Ginger in the last episode, is pretty ovious that he was not enough mature for decide what he wants and for have steady relationship as many teenegers are in real life, they deserves a second chance as mature adults for build their relationship in the right way, is pretty ovious that they are going to end up together, Ginger dont know Orion at all for being in a steady relationship for ever , Darren in the other hand they know each other since childhood .

I definitely agree to disagree. It does send a bad message. But I think the reason why the series ended abruptly is either the contract or the writers. All grown up ended too soon too. When nickelodeon went into shit.
But on the other hand these are real life issues that do happen. Honestly when this showed aired, they were really in high school, this part of the series felt like college. Lots of the episodes were very complex. Until I got older I realized how deep the show was

I loved this. You also have really cool singing voice - effortless and true. As Told By Ginger is indeed one of the most underrated animated shows ever! As a kid growing into my teens I always applauded how the show played as more an animated drama than just another cartoon with episodes of antics. I felt a sense of relation with some of the characters albeit trait by trait and episode by episode and really enjoyed the plots. I think my favourite thing about the show, besides seeing cartoon change clothes because WOW 11 year old me had his mind blown by that, was how seriously it took us as an audience in telling life events with cartoon characters. I as a kid felt like I was being seen as more than just a kid who'd laugh at anything colourful put in front of me. I was given nice times, crappy friends, being misunderstood (which I often did), broken families, learning the tiny things about people to show you care (the episode with Carl and Jonas and the nuts replayed when you flashed it. i have a friend who is also allergic so that episode hit home as I remembered feeling some type of way thinking how awful it would be if she were in Carl's shoes) and most importantly for me is how hope is sometimes all you have in messy and undeserving situations - when the sun's gone and the stars waltz about in the sky, the faith you have in the sun's shine of tomorrow is sometimes enough and that is what I saw a lot in Ginger. I would have assumed that a lot more people would have done video more elaborate and focused essays on the show by now but am elated at discovering yours. Thank you for such a great job!

while I agree Dody is pretty bad, I feel like she was bad because otherwise the group wouldn't really do anything. She essentially pushes the plot along at the cost of being a terrible person. She is essentially resolved because Ginger is that kind of grounded person who takes a person's flaws as is and accepts them, even if the average person would've cut off Dody earlier.
As for Miranda, honestly... she's a perfect villain in my eyes. I think they just wanted someone who counter's Ginger's meek, grounded almost boring personality with someone vivacious and sinister. She's the type of character who we love to hate and giving her more depth might have ruined the purpose of her. I feel like the combo of Courtney and Miranda gave an ease to the antagonism whereas if Courtney took Miranda's role, then the show's villain might have come across as too harsh because, while Miranda can essentially run as wild as she can with her schemes, she'll always be pulled back by Courtney, creating a bit of a push n pull.
As for Darren... I don't remember much of the post middle school episodes, I feel like what you described gives Darren the WORST resolution to a character. I suppose it could've been a way for the creators to make new love interests, but I guess it got cancelled before anything could happen.

I watched this show at the end of 2021. I remember watching it when I was a kid and it was dubbed in Arabic (somehow they still sound the same as the Arabic version lol) I had fun and tears and mixed emotions watching it again being 19. I've found that it influenced the way I grew up and the way I think and treat people. I also found that some of my gender aspects were inspired by the show, since I'm trans mtf I was inspired by the fashion and the girly stuff in the show and I still I'm. The nostalgia I had watching this everyday for a month or two could not be described it was so emotionally strong and heart touching, I'm so grateful for this show being a part of my life and influencing me to be a better person as I grew up.

16:16 I think the reason Dodie and Ginger are still in each other’s lives as adults is because of two reasons. One by the distant finale one can assume (or hope) that Dodie had outgrown her petty behaviour. Two Ginger has learned or at least started to set stronger boundaries with her.

So many random moments from this show are still stuck in my head. Like Carl’s cougar AF crush (I remember that being totally in his head rather than something the “girlfriend” in question was even aware of, and Hoodsie being the voice of hilariously horrified reason when Carl announces he’s going to propose) dying at the dinner table with one last “Oh…Foo.”
Or the Courtney Grippling theme song (which she reprises at her over-the-top birthday bash while Miranda sings very unenthusiastically along 🤣). BTW, that episode was my personal **GASP** moment because I’m obsessed with Selkies. Rock on, Little Seal Girl!

Wow, great review on the show! I have to say I am a huge fan of the show since it first came out and I still watch to this day. I have so much to say about the characters and plots that took place throughout all three seasons... First let me say that I loved Gingers Mom, she was literally the back bone and support that Ginger always needed. I definitely had to issues with Dodie's character bc like you said she was very selfish, especially when it came to Ginger wanting to do things without her or not including her. I especially didn't like how they let go out the episode after Dodie and Macie stabbed Ginger in the back by trying to break up Darren and Ginger just bc Ginger was paying more attention and time with Darren...I don't understand how everything ended being forgiven and forgotten. On to Darren, I actually liked him but when the high school episodes came and he got caught up in the football team and that Simone girl, thats when I started to dislike him a bit...then by the Finale he starts to realize his mistake of breaking up with Ginger. I didn't get why Courtney was the one being harassed by older high schoolers and we hear nothing about Miranda or Mipsy who were her so called Best friends....It's sad to say that the creators didn't have enough time to make more of a story line...I read that they would have made more episodes that probably would've answered more of our questions instead of cramming it all into a few final episodes. Overall I loved the show, I wish there would have been more to watch episodes to watch!

I just rewatched the whole show on CBS All Access and I loved it. Dodie may be the worst, but I still thought she was endearing. I think Miranda deserved more depth too. Season 3 is rough, but I think its an accurate depiction of life. All in all it was an amazing show where even the bad episodes offered something good and I miss watching it already.

Courtney isnt evil, she was just dim and is lacking self awareness. While she is def self absorbed, she was never malicious. She's probably naive n bratty because her parents dont give her much attention, so they shower her with material things and sadly dont have much chance to teach her how to not be easily bamboozled in real life. Yet despite the lack common sense, she tries, especially when she got close to Ginger.
Miranda while evil, is at least was evil from the get go. That makes her a better character compared to Dodie who was the worst friend in the show (Being stabbed by an enemy is better than being stabbed by a friend and all that jazz). She was basically a bitch in sheep's clothing as while she says she cares for her friends, she's never happy if something good happens to them because its not her getting the good thing. Miranda while malicious and evil as heck, is at least honest and open about that. She also always did care for Courtney, actually loyal to her and progressively softens as the series goes on. In polar contrast to Dodie's friendship with Ginger.
I feel Darren's marriage with Ginger probably wouldve gone better if they didnt put the whole getting back together OFF SCREEN. It's one thing where you show two people having no resolution on screen then have them married in the flash forward as opposed to showing how the relationship deteriorated and break up on screen then flash forward with the same people married. On one hand, maybe Ginger x Darren was endgame but they may have ran out of time and not willing to just go for the other guy, sadly.

I think what the very last scene with Darren is supposed to mean is that we all grow and change. Sometimes we come back to each other

I wish Ginger would’ve ditched Dodie after she teamed up with Miranda to destroy her relationship with Darren. And then when she refused to tell Ginger about him and Simone. She was not a girl’s girl! Oh, and then she had a wig like Ginger’s hair LOL! Ginger should’ve kicked her to the curb. Courtney was a real one though

its like people dont realize Darren and ginger are kids when they are dating. kids to dumb shit. They grow up and change and realize what is most important. She even said it nothing worth having ever comes easy.

Yeah im not agree with the gal of the video and the Ginger and Darren haters, They are children soo is pretty ovious that their relationship is not going to work right , they need to get enough maturity for a steady relationship, teen relationship rarely work, they grown up and they realized how much they loves each other, teens and even adult people commits mistakes, Darren even miss Ginger in the last episode, it kinda foreshadowing the Epilogue .

Thank you for a great review.
Although I never got into this show. My younger sister loved it. I found out about it thanks to RUclips.
Pointing out the flaws of the show, “friends” was awesome. Who would think a cartoon would have better character development than a live show is funny.
Side note, I hadn’t realized Cree Summer had such a lasting voiceover career.

Ginger was interesting to watch as a kid even though it was for tweens but I love how it feels different compared to the wild thornberries, Rugrats, and rocket power.

i actually have to disagree with you on the fact that if your family treats you like shit then you have no obligation to have anything to do with them. my father has in the past treated me like shit same with my mother. but as much as i didnt want to speak them or see them i knew deep down that its not good to continue to be mad over something that happened in the past. honestly i have noticed that by forgiving the people that treated me badly in the past my anger as well as my depression have slowly started to improve. it is better to forgive and move on with life. people change as they get older. with that said yes both my parents have changed and we have a wonderful relationship with each other.

I remember the show as it was airing, and you hit a lot of great notes. One thing that stood out to me, especially as a sign of the times is that this had the first depiction of an interracial relationship I've seen on a Nickelodeon show.

Sure the show was mainly targeted to girls and young teenage girls if it wasn't for the Carl/Hoodsey segments, but most importantly this show taught you about life in general and I'm glad I watched Ginger growing up. Its another Hey Arnold.

I think the writers are so involved by Ginger that they ignore the things important we always wanted see like: Ginger standing for herself towards Dodie in say she is a big bitch who thinks about herself and specially unworthy of love she wants never she her again. After that Ginger starts of hates herself for easily forgive people without thinks that affects her very seriously and Courtney recomforts her in saying: it’s okay you didn’t even know that people can’t change because they are trash. And hearing this advice Ginger put Courtney in her friend group and about Darren he realised he have again feelings for Ginger and decides of give up his celebrity for her in apologising has been a big jerk self centered and realised Ginger is more distrustful in saying: Darren i appreciate the way you regret what you did but i don’t know the day where i can totally forgive you sorry" and also that Courtney is one of main characters and Dodie in the second. A really shame that has been added in the show.

I remember some episodes, but definitely didn't see most of the episodes you mentioned in the later seasons. Thought it was cancelled with no finale at all. Did find the finale on RUclips a few years ago. Also watched a few clips that involved Courtney and Ginger, and part of me started to think: "Does Courtney have undiagnosed feelings for Ginger"? Looking back did Courtney even have feelings for any guy? She did kinda flirt with Darren's older brother when she and Macy had to go to the high school to take French in season one. That's all I can remember. I remember reading a comment in another video that said that the show runners wanted to give Courtney a coming out story, but the network wouldn't allow it. Explains why she started to fade off in season three. You'd be surprised how many animated characters in the past were gay but couldn't actually say it. This show has its flaws but still good for kids who grew up with it. Kinda followed those lessons without realizing it. I was 7 or 8 when it premiered, and even though I didn't understand some of the situations at the time I still have some memory of them. I was raised by a single mom and the Hello Stranger episode really got me. Really enjoyed the ending were Ginger thanked her for the flowers, even though she was trying to make her think it was her dad that gave them.
