They're both classically trained; however, Rob's training concentrated on opera, Austin's degree is in Musical Theatre. In an interview with Patrol Gaming, Austin said that he really wanted to show off "opera Rob" but Rob said he wouldn't unless Austin sang it with him. Austin said he was okay but that Rob was fantastic. I love how they support each other! I also love your channel, comments & reactions!

When I saw HF in concert back on March 3rd, I mentioned to Rob I was so impressed with his opera singing. He said he was raised on opera by his father. He studied opera and his teacher wanted him to pursue it professionally, but he said he didn't have the discipline to put in all the work that is needed to sing opera professionally. I told him I hoped he and Austin would sing opera again sometime in the future. He said maybe. ❤

Rob is operatically trained. Austin is musical theater, so he's doing a pseudo-operatic technique. Expert reviewers say they can tell the difference. But as long as their performance is at least 10X better than what we could do, we ordinary folks are happy either way.

      @@patriciamcl54 My pleasure. 🙂
BTW, I'm not saying it's "perfect". What does "perfect" mean, anyway? But it's BY FAR the best Italian pronunciation I've heard from native English speakers EVER, and very close to how an Italian native speaker would do. For comparison, you can check the same aria sung by Pavarotti, who was from my birth town. Well, for "obsessed purists" Pavarotti himself has "an accent" (the one that's peculiar to our birth town), but then, who doesn't? Anyway, he's the reference for this aria. You'll see that the guys here do absolutely well. 🙂

  • @joywright8794
    @joywright8794 Год назад +13

I have seen this sung as duets and trios with "Professional" opera singers. These Professionals are used to singing solos within the Opera. Soloists are used to making their performance personal. The means that the phrasing of the lyrics, breath control, volume and intensity, length of finishing of notes held , basically they make the aria their own. They concentrate on making the feel all their own interpretation. Put them together with one or two more singers and it is like trying to herd cats. What Rob and Austin lack in perfect technique, they more than make up with their ability to meld with each other that is so important to A Cappella. Where they sing together they are together, when they express emotion they emanate the same intensity, when they break into a harmony they are sensitive to what the other is doing so they start together, harmonize together, and finish together. No distractions, just smooth bliss. To see a perfect example of this talent check out Home Free's "Helplessly Hoping" You won't believe the effortless precision of these guys.

    • @patriciamcl54
      @patriciamcl54 Год назад +2

i don't at all disagree but I think you overlook the differences in what is being sung. In Rob's first section the hero is dreaming of the sadistic princess he has fallen for, imagining her watching the stars and in love with him. Puccini, and Rob, give us the sweeping emotion. In Austin's first part, the hero (who will be executed if the princess can guess his name) expresses his utter determination never to admit who he is until he wins his bride. This part requires what the Italians call "spinto", incisiveness, the ability to cut through the orchestration. Their voices are perfectly matched to what they are singing, and the transitions are, as you say, totally smooth, and follow the cues given by the music. To that extent they are using the duet form to assert individuality in approach.
You say they lack technique and there I must disagree. The one quibble I would have is that Rob at times could open his mouth a little more. Otherwise there is nothing wrong with their technique that I can see. Jen Glatzhofer gives a very full technical assessment and applauds their technical ability.

Rob although trained in singing opera had not sung that genre in fifteen years. Austin persuaded him to sing Nessum Dorma. They were both very nervous what people's reactions would be when they released the video.
People were blown away, both opera fans and people who hadn't listened to opera before. It opened the door to expose people who had never listened to opera and people who ldidn't listen to country and learned about Home Free.
Rob obviously has operatic training and his pronunciation of Italian is correct. Austin has a musical theater background. He can obviously switch off his accent. He sings in the accepted crossover manner by musical theater singers when they do opera. His pronunciation of Italian is correct
They are both amazing, but hearing Rib's deep operatic voice is shocking and eye opening. Professional opera singers such as Peter of the Bass Gang said Rob could easily found employment as a professional opera singer. Home Free and Home Fries are obviously glad that he chose a different career path. However, Home Free members constantly expand their horizons with different projects.

There is no real difference between what you term "musical theatre" and opera sung by a lyric tenor. The idea that all tenors in opera sing in the heavy Italianate style is not correct. A lyric tenor like Austin is in fact more in demand by opera houses, as the Italian operas have become unfashionable, and modern composers tend to write for lyric tenors. in any case, the training for musicals is extremely intensive, vocally and in other ways. Traditional opera does not require singers to look reasonable and dance while singing, as well as developing acting skills. Listen to Austin singing Bring Him Home to get some idea of what a really good lyric tenor can do with a piece of music theatre.

If you think you might enjoy opera, I suggest you check out Jonathan Antoine's home concert of Nessun Dorma and I think you'll find that Rob and Austin's performance compares very favorably to this generation's premier opera tenor. Jonathan and his partner came in second on Britain's Got Talent in 2012, but he's had a stellar touring and recording carreer ever since. I think he'll convince you to listen to more opera. Now if Rob and Austin would just give us some more...

Rob was channeling Luciano Pavarotti. I wish they’d do more of this. Austin reminds me of Jose Carreras ( From the 3 tenors Pavarotti, Dominguez and Carreras)
I know the title says two country singers trying to sing opera, well they weren’t trying, they were singing opera. Very well 😊

Maggie Renee, who is also another RUclipsr, who does reaction videos is a professionally trained opera singer, and she reviewed this song on her RUclips channel. I recommend you check out her reaction to this song, and what she hast to say. That’s to say that there’s nothing wrong with your reaction and I absolutely love the way you are reacting to them saying this, and from the comments I know you’ve learned that they have been trained in opera, albeit two different ways

I'm afraid I can't take anything Ms Renee says seriously since she launched an attack on Home Free, the band itself, because their distribution company did not allow her to "sell" their songs for her pocket. In any case, considering she is only a student, I never cared for her snooty attitude towards people with as much training as her and years of experience under their belts. She used to talk of doing a duet with Austin as if she would be doing him a big favour!

@@patriciamcl54Maggie tries to make every reaction into something about herself. It is incredibly irritating and the reason I stopped watching her channel. Which is a shame, because she seems to have a good knowledge base and she can be engaging. But the narcissistic tendencies ruin it.

I’m not a huge opera fan, but I’ve seen enough to know that Rob and Austin did an extremely good job with this. You’re correct, Rob is trained in opera. Rumor has it, he played this for his father, and his father (who wanted Rob to stay with opera and was afraid he’d never hear Rob sing it again) wept. Rob’s voice is amazing, no matter what he sings!
I recommend you check out Luciano Pavarotti’s brilliant rendition of Nessun Dorma to have something to compare this to. It is well worth watching, even if you don’t do a reaction video of it.
BTW, thanks for the Monty Python reference. 😎😉

Well, not only does Home Free and its members never disappoint, your reactions never disappoint. Well done, and welcome to the opera rabbit hole, although I'd recommend going about it slowly. At 3 score and 11, I'm still only beginning to appreciate opera. My gateway drug was a vinyl from RCA titled "Wagner's Greatest Hits".

A slight treat for you in case your Italian is lacking. Peter Barber is an opera singer and has done a reaction/analysis of this with Rob and Austin. The first opera I ever saw was Aida set in Rome when I was 16. The stage was the ruins of the Roman Baths big enough to bring two chariots drawn by 2 horses each with the charioteers fighting from the chariots. I had no clue what was said - at the time I was fluent in Spanish and of course English, but there is a difference between Spanish and Italian. However, it did start an appreciation of opera that really has lasted my whole life. On my way home I stopped in Connecticut to see my brother. He and his wife to me to Yale University to hear the great Carlos Montoya, one of the world's best Flamenco guiitarists. It was a great summer.
What is the English translation of ‘Nessun dorma’?
    None shall sleep,
    None shall sleep!
    Even you, oh Princess,
    In your cold room,
    Watch the stars,
    That tremble with love
    And with hope.
But my secret is hidden within me,
My name no one shall know,
    No... no...
On your mouth, I will tell it,
    When the light shines.
And my kiss will dissolve the silence that makes you mine!
(No one will know his name and we must, alas, die.)
    Vanish, o night!
    Set, stars! Set, stars!
    At dawn, I will win!
    I will win!
    I will win!
What are the original Italian lyrics for ‘Nessun dorma’?
    Nessun dorma! Nessun dorma!
    Tu pure, o Principessa
    Nella tua fredda stanza
    Guardi le stelle che tremano
    D'amore e di speranza!
Ma il mio mistero è chiuso in me
    Il nome mio nessun saprà!
No, no, sulla tua bocca lo dirò
    Quando la luce splenderà!
    Ed il mio bacio scioglierà
Il silenzio che ti fa mia!
    ll nome suo nessun saprà
E noi dovrem, ahimè! Morir! Morir!
    Dilegua, o notte! Tramontate, stelle!
    Tramontate, stelle! All'alba vincerò!
    Vincerò! Vincerò!
