The 'Carrots and Sticks' is (as far as I now) an old way of herding animals. They were hit with a stick and praised with a carrot if they came along. So Belarus and Ukraine are 'forcing and praising' Russia into 'loving' them. That's at least my opinion.

"Carrots and Sticks" is also a political strategy used by authoritarians to keep people in line. Considering this song is about the former Soviet States, it's darkly appropriate
honestly i think it’s the opposite, historically of course. like jeros said, this tactic could also be used by authorities to keep people in line. as both ukraine and belerus were formerly part of the soviet union, this could work with russia doing this to them to keep them in line, and not become independent. he was forcing them to be part of his union, and not the other way around.

I’m so glad I’ve finally seen someone else mention this 🤣 when I first heard this a decade ago, I was like “wait a minute” and was convinced it was the same without actually checking out the original All the Things She Said song. But out of nostalgia, I checked it out for the first time since before I got into Hetalia, and I had to come here right after. I’m guessing they had this as their character song since t.a.t.u is from their region. Both songs give me such nostalgia now.

Well, Hetalia characters are separated from their governments, when they do bad things, it's often because they are ordered to do so by their bosses. The author created this "boss" idea because otherwise almost all countries have to be psychopaths for Hetalia to somewhat resemble real history.

Awwh, why is everyone talking about boring Belarus? She's a yandere. Okay. We get that. Stereotypical character. I love Ukraine because she's such a sweetheart and caring older sister. She's beautiful, kind, strong, and shows her emotions well. She's more of a complex, original character in my opinion. I'm not bashing on Belarus, but I just think Ukraine is a better character. Just look at her lines in this song. Belarus: *all about loving Russia or marriage* Ukraine: "I've always imagined your figure standing in a raging blizzard on a frigid, lonely night. I think this symbolizes that, she being the one who raised Russia since he was young, that one day--even though he is more powerful than her--he will respect her and seek her guidance once more.

Liliani Fakailoatonga AGREEMENT!!! Kind of like how I listen to "Miss Understood" so many times (mostly it's only when I get frustrated, sad, or rejected) and I don't cry, but I feel sad, then I feel better. I have a plethora of awesome friends, but a lot of people don't like me, either. It's like I'm a Puerto Rican female version of Prussia. I secretly felt lonely, and then I moved to another state, losing my ONLY bestest friend that felt like a sister. We still communicate, but it's not the same. My parents, sister and I are like opposites, so trying to get along is a bit hard, but at least we still live each other. Listen to songs like this or those songs that make you feel better all the time. Even if it's sad, it's better. As long as you have ONE thing to make you happy, you'll be fine.
