This solves my huge problem for a new tank layout - how to layer plants in a 12” wide aquarium!! So thankful. …. Would you mind listing some of the plants you used? I saw Java ferns. 🇨🇦
Hello 👋 my friend from Australia. Very good your video. Interesting theme. Beautiful aquariums and fish. Like. I wish you all the best and new success.
Brilliant idea and excellent video. I wish my java fern grew as well as yours. I do have swords, crypts and anubias taking over so I should not complain
what I like over and above the gripping points it gives plants to anchor to, forming a living plant wall, is the tremendous bacterial microbiota forming throughout the mat with minimal amounts of solids accumulating. I expect it to be somewhat "self cleaning" with solids breaking down and falling down, to be drawn away eventually to the canister filters. It's been a good 2 years now in action :)
Hope my Bunnings has these pads ... I have been thinking about doing something like this for quite a while and was toying with the idea of using either a large foam pad or matala mat - now i'll hunt for these coarse pads instead as they seem to be perfect. Thanks for bringing these pads to my attention.
I started with the idea of using them as Hamburg Matten filters in the corner of my tank to keep Red Cherry shrimp out of my canister filter intake, and then the plant idea came to me :)
@@AussieAquatic I gave this a go in my 29 gallon last week. It's got a dozen emperors in there. I used a black carbon aquarium pad and cut slits in it. The only plant I put in it was java moss. Hoping it fills in and gives a bit more cover for the fry. Thanks a bunch!
Had the idea that this was how it was done after seeing a glimpse of the back part from binging old videos of this aquarium. Java ferns aren't as quickly growing in my setups though, even after longer periods of time.
@@AussieAquatic yeah, I had plans doing with coarse pad many months ago but I just kept on delaying until I forgot. There's not a lot of changes to my tanks in the past several months compared to to my earlier ones.
Great question!! I prefer to hang them with a plastic clip and a zip tie on the back glass, just so they can be removed from time to time for trimming. No reason they couldn't be siliconed in place if you wanted to.
Could I stick (glue?) some large pads to the back of a 4ft tank? Does the pad need to be a certain thickness for the slits and plants? Should I just use java ferns or are their other that will work as well. I'm setting up my first tank ever 400lt. I found some 30x30 pads in Sydney.
Silicon would work, but I'd prefer to keep them accessible for maintenance in and out, for plant trimming, adding new plants or moving around, so I have mine hanging from plastic clips with fishing line (looks invisible)
@@fishboi5426 that amount of water is really heavy, so pick a strong stand AND be sure to lay a sheet of polystyrene between the tank bottom and stand.
@@AussieAquatic oh thanks I didn't know anything about putting polystyrene in between but I'll definitely do it and yes it is alot of water so I'm going to build a stand myself. My plan is just a steel box with some wood on all the sides but not too and bottom to make it look just a little better
@@AussieAquatic i had a scour around the web site and i could only see the first smaller ones you picked up. Any idea what they were for a floor polisher or something perhaps?
Hi Anna, that's an interesting comment. I'm sorry to hear about your shrimp My shrimp and my fish did not die, or get sick, or look any different than normal after installing these nylon pads. We have so many variations of plastic in our hobby that have been used for decades safely. Plastic box filters, plastic under-gravel filters, plastic canister filters. Every sponge filter, which is used in shrimp tanks is plastic sponge. We have many proven types of plastic filter media for bacteria, like bio-balls and K1 What material did you use? was it new? did you rinse it first?

Hi Catherine, this is working so well for me.
All the plants I'm using are types of Java ferns, broad leaf, narrow leaf and crested Windelov :)

Thankyou for watching my friend 🙂👍🏻
😮Where have you been all my life, Colin? Can’t talk now, I’ve gotta go to Bunnings and buy scourers.
Kathy, I love these tough scourer pads so much 😁👍
awesome ! I subbed.
Welcome aboard mate :)
Great idea 💡
😁👍🏻
I’d say I’ve just found the perfect long weekend project. Cheers! 🐟❤️
Great to hear!
Not to mention it greatly increases beneficial bacteria capacity in the tank as well as looking good :)
Great video mate, might give it a try one day!
You should!
Extra filtration too :)
Super awesome tips Colin!!
🌱🌱😀😀👍👍
Glad you enjoyed it guys :)
Such a great idea! 👍
You saw it first here :)
Thanks master for the idea your aquarium looks great.
Any time!
Yours is very cool too :)
Nice tip thank you for sharing, I love your guppies. 😃

Rewatched.. I would love to try this on my 40 breeder .
You absolutely should.
It's basically a Hamberg Matten filter with plants growing out of it :)
@@AussieAquatic just need to find inexpensive plants ..
What an amazing idea Colin. I'm just warming up the Ute to head to Bunnings now!
Have fun!
I thought you might like it :)
I'm working on gravity powered electricity next, much better than bio-diesel for the ute :)
Looks like all that time spent loitering in hotel lobbies has really paid off.

your welcome :)

I used a stainless screen during my attempt but the fish would mess it up always.
@@MorningDriftwood I think the coarse pads work better because they culture a nice bacteria biofilm with some organics being trapped as well.
Crypts and anubias will all grow just fine this way too :)

If you did a large tank would you have to silicone it to back so it doesn't tip over or flop

What a fantastic idea I have heaps of baby Java ferns at the moment what section did you find the big pads in or what did Bunnings call them ?
The big pads "were" in the Hire section, and now they've moved, so they might be a special order now depending on which store you're in.
