Me too! I had this song on a cd with a few other songs (this was the only one in English and I’m having a hard time finding others which are in various languages.) While cleaning out my closet of childhood possessions, I found the cd, which my parents say they think of of my uncles put together when I was born, and was immediately brought to tears with memories of my youth. I remembered every note in this song despite not having heard it in years. I used to listen to the cd every night while laying in bed for years and years in elementary school, and it has an inexplainable sentimental value to me. So glad to have found this very special song.
My music teacher in Elementary school (MANY years ago) played this song for us in music class, and little snippets of this song have come back to me every now and then over the years. I’m JUST now finding the song from all those years ago! 😱
Lyrics: Home by Barna In Scarlateglen there lived a lass And every morning after mass She would go and take a glass Before going home by Barna We won't go home along the road For fear that we might tax the rogue We won't go home along the road We'll go home by Barna We won't go home across the fields The big thorn needles will stick in our heels We won't go home across the fields We'll go home by Barna We won't go home the milk boreen The night is bright we might be seen We won't go home the milk boreen We'll go home by Barna We won't go home along the bay The tinkers' camp is on the way We wont go home along the bay We'll go home by Barna We won't go home along the main The swoogh is sure to rise again We won't go home along the main We'll go home by Barna We won't go home along the shore For fear we hear the banshee roar We won't go home along the shore We'll go home by Barna We won't go home along the strand We might disturb the fairy band We won't go home along the strand We'll go home by Barna Lyrics verses 3&4 - Teresa Doyle Milk boreen - cow path Swoogh - a host of departed souls that transport people from one place to another Tinkers - the travelilng folk in Ireland, much like the Gypsys Banshee - a fairy woman who wails near the home of someone soon to depart this life.

Lyrics: Home by Barna
In Scarlateglen there lived a lass
And every morning after mass
She would go and take a glass
Before going home by Barna
We won't go home along the road
For fear that we might tax the rogue
We won't go home along the road
We'll go home by Barna
We won't go home across the fields
The big thorn needles will stick in our heels
We won't go home across the fields
We'll go home by Barna
We won't go home the milk boreen
The night is bright we might be seen
We won't go home the milk boreen
We'll go home by Barna
We won't go home along the bay
The tinkers' camp is on the way
We wont go home along the bay
We'll go home by Barna
We won't go home along the main
The swoogh is sure to rise again
We won't go home along the main
We'll go home by Barna
We won't go home along the shore
For fear we hear the banshee roar
We won't go home along the shore
We'll go home by Barna
We won't go home along the strand
We might disturb the fairy band
We won't go home along the strand
We'll go home by Barna
Lyrics verses 3&4 - Teresa Doyle
Milk boreen - cow path
Swoogh - a host of departed souls that transport people from one place to another
Tinkers - the travelilng folk in Ireland, much like the Gypsys
Banshee - a fairy woman who wails near the home of someone soon to depart this life.
I'm pretty sure your 'Scarlateglen' is actually a mishearing (or intentional mispronunciation) of Scartaglen, a village in County Kerry.
Thank you for the lyrics and explanation of certain words!
when i was young I was afraid of this song after reading the lyrics haha
but its a cool sounding song
It is kind of spooky.
@@waterlilyqueen I loved this song as a kid and then I learned what swooghs and banshees were and the song creeped me out.
The best! This song has been done so many times, but you have captured its spirit better than anyone!
