    Hey, just some more information.
    In the GB version, press select on the start menu. You will see an icon pop up. Once that shows up, press start. You will see that the maze will be scaled down to the point where you can see the whole thing.

    There is technically another version of Pac Man for the NES. The European PAL version, and it plays differently. The change in timing puts ghosts in different places. So if you play by NTSC maze pattern routines, you won't get far.

    The best Game Boy Pac Man game is from Namco Museum 50th Anniversary for the GBA, the screen is stretched but it can be changed to rotated for GB Micro, and Scrolling, but I'd stick to stretched screen since it shows the whole Pac Man maze

    The Special Color Edition of Pac-Man for the Game Boy Color is superior because Pac-Attack is included on the cartridge and the original Pac-Man game itself is in full color.

    You know's what's interesting? There has been 4 released of this Pac-Man game in the U.S. Official Tengen version in 1988, unofficial Tengen version in 1989, unofficial Tengen 10th Anniversary version in 1990, and official Namco Hometek version in 1993, after Tengen stopped producing NES games.

  • @johneygd
    @johneygd 6 лет назад +1

    But why did it took so long for namco to put their pacman on nes? How was tengen able to come with an official licensed version of it in 1988? Did namco loaned the rights to tengen or did tengen it iligally.

    • @DefunctGames
      @DefunctGames  6 лет назад

      Before Namco opened their American branch in 1990, they had an agreement with Tengen (who was created by arcade manufacturer Atari) to publish their games on the Nintendo Entertainment System. That's why you saw licensed versions of both Pac-Man and Rolling Thunder in the early days.

      I have, and I wasn't a huge fan of it. That said, I accept your point. I was specifically talking about the original Pac-Man, but there are plenty of examples of the franchise having scrolling stages in later games.

    Side note for PAC-MAN pros: Another reason not to buy the GameBoy version is that you can't tell the ghosts apart. This makes where they'll go all the more unpredictable.

    • @Bloodreign1
      @Bloodreign1 Год назад

      The GBC version fixes that problem with different color ghosts, the original even on a SGB makes all the ghosts the same color, but just stay away from the ghosts, and you'll do fine. Plus the GB and GBC Pac-Man and Ms. Pac-Man games are super cheap to buy.

  • @Bloodreign1
    @Bloodreign1 Год назад +1

    I own the Game Boy, and Game Boy Color versions of Pac-Man and Ms. Pac-Man, I like them all the same as the big console versions. Oh and there is one thing different about the versions of Pac-Man, the price of the Namco variant is far higher than the Tengen variant, and is less common. I was lucky to score the Namco Ms. Pac-Man NES version for $20 (it too is approaching the $100 mark), still desire that Namco variant due to the extra options it has over the barebones Namco version.

    • @Bloodreign1
      @Bloodreign1 Год назад

      Tengen variant I desire, not the Namco variant, since I own the Namco one already. I don't want the Namco Pac-Man version though, since it's basically the version Tengen built off of for it's release.

  • @Christopher-N
    @Christopher-N 3 года назад

    From what I'm reading, Namco developed and held the original rights to _Pac-Man._ Namco also bought the Japanese division of Atari (just that division, not the whole company). Atari was given license to publish the existing Famicom version of _Pac-Man_ on the NES, which they did through the Tengen label. First, Atari had license to release the game on the NES (gray cartridge), then Nintendo revoked that license due to a dispute, so Atari published the game without NES license (black cartridge). Years later, Namco decided to officially re-release the game themselves on the NES (gray cartridge). So, assuming that the ROM on both Tengen cartridges are exactly the same, is there was any difference in the ROM between the Tengen and Namco versions? With only the screen captures provided in this video, the later Namco version has the trademark TM symbol next to the title.
    Any difference in game play (scoring / bonuses) isn't shown in this video. Now armed with this information, I can only assume that any difference in game play, the Namco version _should_ in theory be closer to the Arcade version, but that's only my educated guess. I genuinely don't know if there's _any_ difference between the three versions. If we for the moment ignore Atari's history with Nintendo, then there's nothing special between the releases to make one more appealing to a collector over the other two versions. The first Tengen version had Nintendo's license to publish for their system, the second Tengen version did not, and the Namco version had Nintendo's license. This is the information I was looking for when trying to decide which versions to add to my wishlist: all releases are valid, with the unlicensed Tengen (black) cartridge being of interest to those wanting to collect Tengen games.

    • @janX9
      @janX9 3 года назад

      You're going to have to be more specific. There are many pacman books. But I can tell you that neither of the NES pacman games play like the original arcade puckman game which is what I think most of the books would teach.
      If you're taking about how to win at pacman then you can see that there NES version is very different and the ghosts have different movements from the original pacman.

    • @LUCKO2022

      +28SNaKeS
      Ten Gen
      That is how it's pronounced like it's 2 different works but it's not.
      It is the center of the board for the game GO, the very same game the name Atari comes from.
      Tengen was Atari Games the arcade division of Atari that was created when Warner Communications split the company into 2 halves. Atari Corp was bought by Jack Traimel who just recently got booted out of Commodore. He had the rights to home consoles, computers and other home products.
      Atari Games was sold to Namco which was the Arcade division. Arcades were dying in the late 1980's (only to get a brief revival in the early 1990's with games such as Smash TV, Street Fighter 2, Mortal Kombat) so they wanted to get into the home market. NES was dominating at the time so they wanted to make games for them. But they didn't have the rights to use the Atari name and logo on home consumer products as that was owned by Jack Traimel, so they called themselves Tengen taking the word from the game GO just like Bushnell took the name Atari from in the early 1970's.

      28SNaKeS
      I just gave you a rough history. It does a little deeper than that.
      But the short version is, Tengen aka Atari Games eventually got bought by Warner Communications in the mid 1990's, then Warner sold it off to Midway in the late 1990's and then rebought it when they bought Midway in 2010 or so. So basically 1/2 of Atari is back home again where it started with the VCS.
