Lathe Backsplash

  • I made a backsplash to keep the stuff behind the lathe from getting soaked in coolant and chips. I made it out of aluminum angle that is "brazed" together using Alumiweld rods from Harbor Freight.

I've never heard (or I don't remember) of these aluminium rods. They seem very handy and no need of expensive torche.

Very nice job. The aluminum welding rods or brazing rods was amazing. Seem to go on effortlessly OK have a good day. I hope to see you this summer.

Thanks for the vid & the mention of the silicon sheet solution. I just bought a package of silicon sheeting for epoxying & soldering; I've been wrestling w/ a mill back splash & some split strips of silicon, like plastic is used on doorways of refrigrated work areas, will do the trick.
    Your mention triggered the idea.
You picked up the Alumiweld faster than I did, I gotta admit. I finally gave up on propane, (too slow to heat), then MAPP because of the turbulance & melt threshold.
When I drug out the OxyAcetylene, was able to get a low pressure, adequately hot flame, it went slick as frog snot.
Was able to keep the torch on the metal & work it just like soldering/brazing, (it really is brazing, technically).
The other thing which helped was using a brazing/welding flux, in addition to abrasive cleaning.

I'm glad it triggered something useful. That is one of the biggest reasons I make videos, because I might be able to give someone an idea for something to try, or to avoid. I'll have to give the oxy/acetylene a try. I bought a very nice condition small set and haven't used it yet. And the flux idea, definitely going to add that. Thanks for watching and commenting!

@@MicksWorkshop You bet... when you try the oxy-acet, keep your pressures down & use a medium or med-large to reduce turbulence.
It's an old gas welder trick I learned 40-50 yrs ago.
I learn & pick up a lot of stuff from YT vids; the majority is indirect, where I get an idea, like w/ yours, or directly, but I see a better/cleaner design/cheaper way. Some of the things aren't even the video's topic.
14-15 yrs ago, I saw someone's drill index on the bench behind them. I noticed every other bit was turned reverse.
Next time I had an index open, I thought about, then turned all the 64th bit shank up.
Then I did it on the 2 transfer punch sets I have. A few days later, after I test drove the idea, & liked it, I grabbed the yellow paint pen & painted the shank end. And the transfers.
It makes grabbing a drill faster & easier; don't have to take the index over to a bright tight light, so my old eyes can see the embossed sizes. (I had problems seeing them when I was young).
I've since expanded the every other reversed concept to all kinds of things. I have a lifetime supply of Army Surplus yellow electricians tape; (bought a case 30 yrs ago, cheap... best tape I've ever had. It'll slow an air or water hose leak down to manageable & work as teflon tape, in a pinch.)
I sat down w/ my sockets one day & wrapped tape around the /16 & odd metrics. Figured it was a fool's errand & it'd come right off; been 10yrs, at least.
I've had a shop since I was 13-14, have owned commercial shops & worked in shops a 1/3 of my 70 yrs.
It's the little sweat equity things a guy does to make things easier/quicker as much as equipment & tools.
I've wanted to launch a channel, myself, & was just about ready to pull the ripcord in late 2018. Then in Jan '19, I got Covid. The Covid cause asymptomatic/dormant HPV to go wild. By May, there was a throat cancer diagnosis. July & my R tonsil & a lymph node under my ear was removed.
Docs proclaimed I was cancer free. By Feb-Mar of '20, the cancer hsd returned. Had chemo & radiation late summer, into fall.
Treatment kicked my ass, big time. By summer, 2022, I was 50%, maybe. Didn't really have to push myself until THIS spring.
Before cancer, I worked 12 hr days, 7 days a wk. Worked hard; as hard as when I was in 40's.
In April, I was told an unrelated imaging I had done Summer '22 "was reviewed & something troubling was found."
Month & an MRI, later, & they tell me the cancer is now in my liver.
Had more radiation in June-July... now, I wait until Dec, to find out if it worked.
So, my YT channel debut has been delayed... LOL
      Later,
      GeoD

Gday Mick, I seen this aluminium rod used a long time ago on another channel and had no luck at all, you have it down pat and it looks a neat clean weld, great job mate, cheers

We are thinking about making a new backsplash for our lathe so it it great to see what you have done. Those aluminum welding rods look very interesting

Ayr Cave Shop also has a video on making a backsplash for the lathe, his is more of a traditional style. Thanks for watching and commenting! 🙂

I initially misread the title as "lathe backlash" and thought this video was going to be about tracking down a backlash issue.
