Never been to SA....dont understand the language either but l follow Kwaito n know atleast new hits and follow stars n SA soapies as if l was born SA can .. ha ha .... RiP Bro Hugh
2024, february 7th, I just discovered "kwela", because I am studying the flute named "tin whistle". But bro, this music is so warm, it's like I can remember the hot streets of the township, even though I've never been there! 😅
This is the beauty of people who express themselves through music, even when they pass from this world, their voice lives on FOREVER. A musician never dies...
wow what a beautiful song and such a beautiful woman with a wonderful voice. this s all new to me and I enjoyed it very much ,thanks for posting this mate!
Does anyone have the lyrics? I'm Dutch and try to pick up the parts in Afrikaans (very similar to Dutch) but it's sometimes hard to know if I'm right. Love the music! Brings back memories from my time in SA. Sadly, this album is not for sale in Europe, so had to order it from SA.
@stofpoeper Thanx! I allready found out it had something to do with the apartheid regime, and now I understand the rest of the lyrics too (the ones in Afrikaans). It's a very sad history and I really listen to this song differently now. It's a big contrast between the tragic topic and the (almost happy) music...
No he means that being black was an emphasis... and you were simply known as black and not anything else... and being black was a sin..... so really during that time we were really just "black" nothing more, not human, not a wife or husband or even a teacher, the first thing you were was black and everything else meant nothing else... because white was the boss and no dignity was given to us, simply for being black.... you were and 50 YEARS NOW our struggle will be forgetten and we'll have forgetten what standing together means
@@sihlentlabati5369 ok, thank you - well, this is not too far from low german, an old dialect they speak here in north germany - my mother still could speak it (everytime she got angry, she fell back into that speech, haha), but i can only read and understand, but not speak... love and greetings from germany
Hahah yeah I understand the language in question is called Afrikaans it's very similar to Dutch and we all know and German and Dutch are two similar languages so that's probably why
Yes,the old school pennywhistle Kwela is rare, and often doesn't exist outside the realm of vinyl records, which are tricky to translate into the youtube world. I feel your craving of the old stuff, but this is a very honorable tribute to the old style(without the pennywhistle,unfortunately)...
By the way, that older fellow singing,he seems familiar, but I cannot place the name, anyone know? His look of defiance at 2:19 is worth a thousand words!
2020 anyone listening? This is my wuuuuh shem kinda jam. R.I.P. Tebogo and bro Hugh.

Straight up from the good ol USA in 2020
Rock on!
germany here in 2021!
yay!!!!!!
this song explains the struggle black south afrikans faced during apartheid
Sadly white South Africans and Namibians also struggled. If you didn't do as you were told, you "left for another job"
Some white South Africans and Namibians didn't have ANY problems killing other whites for "rocking the boat".
2018 and am still listening! 2000s will never understand
Nice song from Malaysia but Malawian

The rhythmic progression of this song is similar to Daudi Kabaka's. There must be some relationship between the two. 🤔🤔🤔
