@One eyed Curious Hi, I Always thought Sonny Boy did it first, but Green Onions came out in October 1962 and Help Me was recorded in January 1963. Perhaps we can put the copycat down to Matt Murphy who played the guitar riff for Sonny Boy?
I first heard this song When I was 13yrs old in 1964 . I begged my mum the to buy me a HOFNER ECHO SUPER VAMPER HARMONICA..7 shillings and sixpence.. I've been playing blues harmonica ever since.. Thankyou Sonny for shaping my music career..😊❤❤❤
I first heard this song when I was about 8 or 9 in the early 2000s thanks to Driver 2. Heard it on the radio in the car tonight, and now I've finally found it. Great harmonica.
@@wesoldoursoulsforrocknroll5652 I believe the song is in Fm and the harp is a Bb putting in second position. Stay away from the 3 draw unbent. It'll sound like a cat in heat on a hot tin roof in a minor song!
Hearing this always takes me back to the sixties when I walked down the steps for the first time into the cellar that was The Twisted Wheel club in Manchester. It gave me goose bumps then and it still does.
@@deanwright7611 Yes. Then I bought the 45. A couple of years later I saw him, along with Muddy Waters, Howlin' Wolf and others, in The American Folk Blues Festival when it visited the Free Trade Hall.
My first hearing was in the early 80s, I was at Uni on the windswept north coast of Ireland, my friend had a top floor garret room and somehow had a cassette of SBW II. We must have listened to that tape hundreds of times. As a musician I marvel at the expressivity of his harp playing to this day. We loved the lyrics. Your funeral and my trial! Obviously so much stuff other bigger stars did was a paler or just plain louder immitation.
Just plain perfect blues (from an imperfect man, as all men are). Voice, harp, drumslap, organ, bass, voice voice voice harp harp harp. Just simple rhythm guitar. It's the Rice Miller show. This song may live forever, or as long as there are human beings.
Love this tune, a masterpiece!!! I love Sonny's voice, and the aesthetic quality of his harmonica. One of the best, ever. Also, let us give some to Willie Dixon - one of the credited writers.
my favorite blues song. No shame in asking for help or expecting help from the one person you love. No matter how strong you think you are- sometimes you gotta have some help sometime. ........or find yourself somebody else. Life is a hard road. Believe it.
Sir, I believe you misinterpret the lyrics. The gentleman wishes to fornicate (understandable) and threatens to leave the lady unless she cooperates (unreasonable).
I got turned onto this song from the Buddy Guy/Junior Wells version of it "Live at Montreux" with Juniors great tribute to Sonny Boy....But this version is the ultimate badass harmonica version. Great organ and just everything is perfect. The comments here are great and I can see I am not the only one that thinks this is one of the greatest minor blues songs of all time. The harmonica is just gut wrenchingly beautiful. Vocals perfect. There is only one way to play this tune.......LOUD!!!!!
Yes one of the great players of his era. I never get tired of this recording. He was an ability to invoke a haunting quality which i would say is his signature style because obviously every time he played this it would be different.A wonderful player.

My god...this is so good. Talk about a channel into some ones soul. Not another person on this earth can do what Sonny does here. Its a perfectly executed piece of music. Credit to the whole band as well.
When I had my weekly Blues radio show I always told the listeners you can't fully appreciate the music until you come to appreciate the culture & people behind it. And, yes, I also told them Muddy Waters was one of the basic food groups people should have everyday.

Hard to argue with that assertion.
That's one brutal song. So unpolished and real... It gets to me every time.

That organ player ! So subtle yet fits the movements of the song perfectly
Listen to this song for a month straight while I was sleep or awake, and nothing else, took me over a 2 years before I got his solos down.
I started to blow my harp with this. Never found better. Now, 35 years later, still the greatest harp song.
Anyone knows which key harmonica is he using here?
Jari Liitola is good but you should check canned heats version, if you haven't already.

Sonny Boy’s best recording, in my opinion.
