The classic "gameshow in a stomach" trope has been displayed throughout lots of media, so I think it's more of one of Kingers rambles then a Goosworxs/Runmo reference

Fun fact: Pomni already appeared before. She appeared in the totally legal and safe smg4 show. Smg4 accidentally teleported her. Also, why do I have feeling the grounds are the showgrounds.
She only appeared as a promotion for the up and coming show, N also showed up in SMG4 but that doesn't mean SMG4 takes place on Copper-9.
Honestly, the characters being generally insane is kind of to be expected.
Caine is an AI who appears to have been left in charge of an unfinished game as well as multiple humans who, as much as he genuinely cares about them, he is not even remotely equipped to deal with. He is quite literally the only reason the characters besides Pomni are still alive, as his adventures are the ONLY THING THEY HAVE TO DO. Seriously, imagine living in a weird house on a small island with the same strangers every single day, and you can't even remember your own name or find anything new to do. Caine even tried to give them an exit, but because he's an AI with no real concept of 'leaving the simulation' he just assumed it was a new area they wanted to see. As annoying as he is at times, he becomes infinitely more likable once you realize he's doing waaaay more than he's built for and has probably been doing so a little longer than he was meant to be operating (besides, from how the characters act you aren't the only one who seems to find him annoying).
Bubble seems to be more like a mascot or pet than an actual character, like some sort of deranged micro-AI that Caine can mostly control. I think the chain-chomp look is just because they're supposed to be a psychotic bubble.
Kinger is the longest-lasting character there, and he's had to deal with the people he's come to know becoming twisted abominations as time goes on (if the queen picture is what I think it is, I'm pretty sure he had to watch his wife get abstracted too). As crazy and 'useless' as he is, the fact that he's still just sane enough to prevent abstraction is pretty damn impressive, and there's clearly a library of information and experience behind those bloodshot eyes. Also, the gameshow joke was a reference to Gooseworx's Little Runmo video, which Kinger apparently got visions of after eating two spoonfuls of gravel.
Jax is certainly an asshole, and you are entirely justified in not liking him. For what it's worth, though, being an asshole who takes pleasure in other's suffering is probably a pretty good way to hold back insanity, so as irritating as he can be it DOES make sense for him to act the way he does. I'm really playing Devil's Advocate for this one, because I don't really like him either.
Gangle just seems like someone who was already unstable going into the simulation, and things just spiraled from there. She seems to be quite happy with her comedy mask, but something always seems to break it which basically makes her useless nine times out of ten. Jax is right in calling her a crybaby, but in all actually that girl is literally just a pile of ribbons who really needs a damn hug.
Zooble, I really don't have much to say about due to their lack of screentime. As someone in this comment section said they're apparently non-binary, but I like the take that it isn't so much political representation as much as it is their avatar is so fucked up that they genuinely couldn't remember what gender they were when they entered the simulation (which is kind of fucking terrifying when you think about it).
Ragatha is, as you said, the mom of the group. She's upbeat and thinks coherently, which allows her to be the voice of reason in a realm of insanity. I think that she's probably the best person for Pomni to befriend here, as she's a genuinely likable person who manages to care even in this virtual hellhole.
And to wrap up this weird little spiel I just did, Pomni. Pomni... needs a hug. Or a break. I don't remember the last time I've ever seen a character so perpetually stressed before, and I doubt that things are going to improve for her as the show goes on. Her reaction to the horror she's found herself in is pretty relatable, though, so I too like her as a character :)
Overall, the cast isn't actually all that bad when you consider the situation they're all in, and that their insane and irritating behavior is likely either a coping mechanism to deal with the madness or a side effect of the aforementioned madness.
That's my take on it all, I guess. Hopefully you find this to be informative!

Really love Kinger out of all of them. And I really disagree with Zooble that he's likely to just snap at any time, he seems in that position where he's too far gone to even realise he is stuck here anymore and thus ironically unable to really lose all hope and go abstract. He doesnt even seek to escape, he's just in his own bubble now.
my theory is the characters aren't actually themselves. they are badly made copies. that's why they have memory loss. the real "pomni" just took off the head set without realizing anything happen and went home. they can't leave cause there is nowhere to go.
yeah, Caine is over the top and unbearable because he was designed to be- for little kids or whatever. He goes at 90mph because he was built to do that, and all that jazz
I've been trying to explain what is up with the exit, but your quote, "Caine even tried to give them an exit, but because he's an AI with no real concept of 'leaving the simulation' he just assumed it was a new area they wanted to see." puts it more eloquently than I ever could have. Yeah, he has no conception of outside the digital circus, so when asked for an "exit", he doesn't understand, short-circuits, and places new placeholder rooms upon placeholder rooms until he gives up and leaves it unfinished. That sort of thing.
If you pay close attention, you can tell the _stark_ difference between scenes WITH and WITHOUT Caine. It's not a pacing issue or a bad-director issue, Caine is just going extremely fast intentionally.

Well Gooseworx confirmed that I Have No Mouth and I Must Scream is a primary inspiration for the premise while the cast is based on the idea of Toy Story but if they were jerks.
Also it’s a bit lighter given that Caine is stated to be oblivious as opposed to evil.
So unlike AM he’s not out to actually hurt them, he’s just kind of incompetent.
Speaking of which, love Caine’s animation with his teeth pulling double duty as his mouth and his eyebrows.
Also funny thing, the VAs are one big roundabout of links, so Jax is voiced by Michael Kovach, who incidentally voiced Angel Dust, Niles, SMG0 and N. And speaking of N, Elsie Lovelock who voiced Uzi does the voice of the Gloink Queen, she also is the present voice of Meggy, meanwhile Lizzie Freeman who voices Pomni was the original voice of Meggy.
Ashley Nichols who voices Zooble is Michael’s partner, and Sean Chiplock voices Kinger also did Thad from Murder Drones and One-Shot Wren in the SMG4 film.
And Caine is voiced by Alex Rochon who also gave us Spamton G. Spamton’s voice both of which are just perfect.
Fun fact: Lizzie Freeman, the voice actor of Meggy in SMG4, is also Pomni.

Jax maybe found an exit door. This is the reason why he's so chill all the time and doesn't have any crazy side like the others because he can leave whenever he wants. He also said that he got keys for everywhere, it maybe gives us a hint.
He doesn't want to live because he loves being a bully in a world where you cannot really suffer (except for mental breakdown).
Or maybe he was very alone in his past life and he's just glad to be with people and his jackass personality is a way for him to not losing it.
Jax is losing it, and pretending he's not by putting on a standoffish, aggressive attitude. He acts like he's in charge, and in control, to cope with the fact that he's not, and he's never leaving. He enjoys what's here, because otherwise he'll go insane. He pretends not to care, because if he cared, he would lose it.

So it's SAO but with a AI that is not evil but don't understand humanity. Now that is scary and terrifying in a SAO anime scenario. Because thinking about it, There are no evil humans controlling players but a AI that may or may not turn evil. Good story idea for the anime or manga. Whichever.

About that Bump In The Night show. It was a clay stop motion tv show in the 90s and Ragatha the doll is partially based on Molly Coddle from the episode Comforting The Uncomfortable.

It's very likely that Caine means well to put an exit door, but he also said he didn't know what to put on the other side. The characters want to leave the game, so I think Caine is oblivious to the fact that the characters know there is a world outside of Caine's own, while Caine himself is either totally unaware that there is, or is aware, but cannot breach it. He's not "all-powerful" as he puts in his own words: "One of the few things I don't have control over are your minds" so it likely means that he has been trying, but failing, to help find a way out.
Kaufmo reminds me of Kafka and kaufman.
Kafka wrote metamorphosis, a story about a man who became a giant cockroach and couldn't hardly move.
Andy Kaufman was a performance artist like Sacha Baron Cohen. Sasha became Borat and tricked people into giving him interviews when he was there only to make fun of them. Andy Kaufman did the same thing with nightclubs, billing himself as a comedian but going up on stage and making fun of the audience instead. So he was a comedian that was deliberately trying to not get any laughs from the audience. He was there just to amuse himself.

Theory : the exit to the digital circus is, the end game. Look, look, it's very clear that the series is inside a game, and old (style) game. And, most old games, even some modern ones, what happened when you complete the final mission/defeat the last boss? You finish the game and go back to the main menu, where you are free to go or replay the game. But the problem is, this game is like stuck development hell, which means that there's no main quest, story, or something along those lines. But honestly cane seems to be a program the same away the director in left 4 dead is. So, cane pretty much to finish the game, by himself, without the devs, ...

With there being no person at the computer it means one of two things. They either got Tron'd into the system like you mentioned OR it scanned and made digital copies of their psyche which might even be more terrifying. The real human Pomni could have been a play tester and simply turned off the game and gone about the rest of her life, meanwhile the engram taken of her psyche is stuck inside the game forever with no body to even return to.

That's actually the voice actor of Angel dust who is voicing Jax, if you look on the credits of the people's name's who voiced the characters you will see Michael Kovach who voiced Angel and Jax.

I've found so much to love about this show and it's only the pilot. The thing I love the most is the characters. They all act the way they do for reasons I believe will be revealed when the show continues.
Kinger is my favorite of the human cast, and I've got a theory about him. He came to the Digital Circus with his wife and would later lose her because she abstracted. To forget the sadness and pain, he acts clueless and crazy to cope with his loss. This would explain the crossed out Queen character in the hallway, as well as why Kinger gave such a detailed speech about the digital food. He's smart, but he doesn't want to be as he's reminded of his loss.
Caine meanwhile, is just a funny AI doing the best he can with what he's got. All the while he spits out some of my favorite lines that can be too relatable. "Why are you like this?" being the most usable in everyday life.

This animation kind of wants you to look deeper and use your mind to piece things together, in order to truly understand it's premise.
As for the *all the characters being unlikable*, that's debatable, and your opinion, but again, they have a deeper meaning to them when you actually look into it.

I actually watched the Raggedy Ann and Andy movie for the first time 3 days ago. Raggedy Ann content started appearing in my recommandations like, a week before the release of The Amazing Digital Circus.
But there still was the meet the cast videos so maybe RUclips picked up on Ragatha and decided to put some Raggedy Ann in my recommandations.
But anyway, I watched the movie and I absolutely loved it ! It's very trippy, but I love its characters. Especially Ann, Andy and the Camel. More people should see that movie.

jax is a jerk but the good kind he did save kingers and gangle from the glitch by pushing them into the hole and not telling them that kaufmo lost it completely so to sum it up jax is a jerk but helps when its needed he just doesn't want to make it obvious
