*!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!spoiler warning!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!” ... ... ... ... The accident was the main catalyst that caused King to want to finish writing the Dark Tower series. As a writer, and someone who has completed the DT series, I see where King was going with the last three books. The ending of Song of Susannah was written in a way that you would want to pick up book 7 as soon as you finish book 6.
Daniel Greene have you ever read “On Writing” by King? It is part a nonfiction memoir on King’s life and part writing manual. Even though it is nonfiction, in some weird way it could be viewed as The Silmarillion or the book of Genesis to the Dark Tower series.
Hail Gunslinger-sai, Hail Roland, Son of Steven, Son of Henry, of the Line of Eld, of Gilead, that was, Warrior of the White, of the House Deschain. Well met along the beam. I hope, you will find the Horn and your Tower, then breach it, and fullfill your Goal. May Ka carry you toward the Tower! May Gan and Maturin support your task to save all of existence! And may you sing the Names of your lost Friends after you breached the Tower! Long Days and pleasant Nights Hail Jake-soh, Son of Elmer, but also Son of Roland, of New York, Warrior of the White. You are our Friend, you served Ka and your Tet, May Chloe, S'Mana and Gan fill you with strength, for you gave strength and courage to countless people all over existence. Fare ya well
Piers Anthony did it first in Xanth. This was my least favorite part. He spent equal parts making himself look humble and cool at the same time...with alluding to him possibly being 'gan' or 'God.' I felt he should have sent them to Merilyn or however King spells it instead and he was gan and created the prim. He could have said all this stuff in interviews which the reader could read if they wanted. It seems like weird self validating. I didn't like it when Piers did it...though I do love Xanth. I like weird shit...the weirder the better. But this just seemed like he was jealous of his own characters and how awesome they are.
I wouldn't say it pulled me out of the story... more like it pulled everything into the story... I am here reading this book and I am on some level of the dark tower, reading about some other level of the dark tower
When you read King's book "On Writing", the event of the car accident was a monumental shift for him personally. I think that his inclusion into the story here is somewhat cathartic for him. It does serve a story purpose as well, linking the real world to the world that has moved on. Just a thought.
Song of Suzannah is for sure my favorite book of the Dark Tower. I loved the King twist and the chaotic pacing. I'm a bit of a slow reader and I read it in like 3 days, which may not be much for others, but it was a very quick read in my average
This was definitely the Stephen King book that made me say "What the f*ck" the most times. So if that's a metric we can use to measure Stephen King novels, then use that as you will haha!
I read the Dark Tower series when I was 19. I am now 34 years old and I can honestly say this story has started with. I’ve recommended, talked about it, quoted it so many times. I think it’s funny that I was 19 when I was recommend it. I love that it’s basically an homage to the Lord of the Rings series. I’m so happy more people are reading.
I believe King himself was uncertain about including himself. But it did serve the story, which I appreciate. Though no one talks about it, King first referenced himself in the novel Thinner which, once people knew he was Richard Bachman, it came across as indulgent.
King's pivot to make The Dark Tower series an exploration into the very meaning of fiction itself was a masterful stroke of brilliance. I will never understand the hate for this book or the way the series turned out. Different people like different things--I accept this, but don't understand this.
Great review. I have read this series several times and just begun a re read via a facebook group (2020 Dark Tower Reading Challenge) and book two is due to commence en masse jan 24. I loved the appearance of Sai King the character in the book, i felt it was as close as fans were ever gonna get to meet the real live person and that is why he put himself in the book. The finale to book seven is unforgettable and i have never been so angry at a book in my life, but that was just me. Others have said the end to book seven was perfect and the only way it could end. As for book six, i remember nothing apart from Mr King's appearance but i loved Susannah the most. Thanks for reviewing it, i would love to see your review of book seven.
The Drawing of the Three is my favorite Dark Tower book, but this one is a very close second. Weird is good. Magic and sword battles and political intrigue and heroes' journeys are all well and good, but "wtf, Fing really?!" is even better if it is done well (particularly when you don't have to lose out on those former comfortable motifs as well.) I've been looking forward to this review since I found your channel -- a bit disappointed that you didn't love this one more, but ce la vie. I can't say I understand why this particular oddity is going to pull people out of the story -- it's weird beyond any doubt, but this is a story about a dimension-hopping cowboy and his time-travelling friends protecting a rose that is the universe from a variety of equally bizarre things (I don't remember with certainty which I could name here without any post-SoS spoilers) -- this book's conceit doesn't strike me as any harder to suspend disbelief for. In fact, it took me more of a moment to catch my breath in Wolves when this situation was initiated, simply to be sure they were saying what they seemed to be saying -- and that is speaking as someone whose first King literature was the Dark Tower series. My only complaint about this installment is the complaint that Tolkien accepts for LotR: the book is too short.
I love Song of Susannah. It's short and definitely feels like a middle part of a story but it's a good read. Never had a problem with King inserting himself into the story. It felt like it made sense for the story that was being told. Excited for you to get to The Dark Tower. It's easily my favourite in the series.
This series demands to be read back to back! It’s definitely my favorite series of all time. I agree this was definitely a bridge book to get to the final book but oh man the final book is absolutely phenomenal and I’m awaiting your review (hopefully soon?)
I read this almost seven years ago and have forgotten most of the plot. Listening to your review, the weird elements came flooding back. I actually liked the book a lot, including the fact that King himself shows up. It makes sense in the context of the book. I need to do a reread soon.
I'm glad you liked it. I absolutely hated SoS, for the same criticisms you listed here. SoS felt like the 2nd movie in every early 2000's trilogy. A lot of faffing about getting nothing done setting up for the actual exciting stuff in the next installment. I use to think higher of it because of one scene I absolutely love until I reread it again and realized that, that scene was ALSO in the last book.
can't wait for you to review the last one, stephen king is my favorite author and the dark tower is my favorite serie ever, haven't gotten around to reading wheel of time or malazan yet tho, and I will not spoil anything but prepare to cry man...I think I cried more reading this book than watching the green mile and interstellar combined, also, absolutely perfect ending...all 3 of them at least. it feel like an ending, then you have a credit scene, then a final after-credit scene....but god damn its so perfect in my opinion. Btw. the weird scale intro was hilarious, keep up the good work mate
Wizard and Glass was my personal fav... but Wolves of the Calla was a killer choice too. I loved these, and that days a lot... I'm usually a Tolkien, Lewis, Le Guin, Zelazney, other classics fan. For me to like this says something.
I loved that when Callahan was reading salems lot lol so funny 😆 lol. They sort of did this in supernatural lol where writer meets his creations from his books lol. Similar reaction lol.
Im so excited for you to finish and review the final book, although technically I think "Wind through the key hole" is sposed to be read before Dark Tower #7 even though it was released after he had finished the series.
We're at the same point - I've just started book 7. Song of Susannah was - yes - very weird, but man did I love it! Possibly my favourite one so far! Some spoilers below... Point taken about the harsh cliffhanger, but nbd imo since I was jumping straight into the next one. Honestly, the best part to me was the King cameo. Not necessarily that it added critical info to the story, or made the overall narrative better, but it spoke to me as an aspiring author - the idea of starting something, then getting scared of certain aspects or being afraid of not measuring up to properly finish the work. All that spoke to me very personally. Now, did it need to be in this story? No. But, I don't think its inclusion did the story any disservice, and I don't think the overall narrative suffered. If anything, it tried to make clear that the King-verse is connected with all of the multiverse, including our own. Kinda ups the stakes a bit. (Until we realize that King in this book dies...making it a very similar one to ours, but not exactly ours. Didn't mind that - kinda liked it - but also it did lower the stakes a bit from where they'd been set.)
Hey Daniel, just got the full wheel of time for when I'm done with the 3rd book of the stormlight archive, to my surprise it even has an autograph from Robert Jordan. Not sure if they all have it, but thanks to you and a friend of mine I am super hyped to take a deep dive into the wheel of time.
Daniel, love the review. I didn’t look through all 180+ of your book reviews, but have you read China Mieville? His New Crobuzon series is, in my opinion, hands down THE MOST bizarre but incredible take on fantasy.
I just finished SoS and really enjoyed it! I started reading King when I was 12 and somehow only got to the DT series now that I'm nearly 40. The meta "author in his own book" idea is weird, but being a CR, it made me smile. Going to start the final book tomorrow evening! If Jake or Oy die while trying to save Susannah I may have to stop reading...when Callahan blessed them outside the Dixie Pig I teared up a little. Happy reading everyone!
Is this your first time reading Dark Tower? Are you also gonna do "Wind Through the Keyhole" havent read it yet but want to. Prolly re-read the series.
Thank you. I was wondering when we were going to get another Dark Tower review out of you. I read the whole series a decade ago. I was wondering if you're going to read and review book 8, 'The Wind Through The Keyhole'? It comes somewhere near the middle of the series and is really just some ancillary tales that King decided to add for flavor. Cheers
Have you read/seen King talk about his car accident and finishing those last few books of the Dark Tower series, it's interesting and kind of informs some of the choices he made in this book(I think).
Happy to see you’re still planning to finish this series. Can’t wait for the final review. I’m reading doctor sleep right now. Do you have any king recommendatios?
Just finished this book today, loved it for the most part. Some of the Susannah/Mia stuff was a bit drawn out but overall (controversy alert), I enjoyed this book more than both Wizard & Glass and Wolves of the Calla. Will start the final book later today.
Great review. Finished the DT series well over a decade ago and absolutely loved it, even book 1. All this DT talk is giving me hankering to re-read the series. SoS was probably my least favourite, but I still liked it. For you DT fans that are also metalheads, you might be interested in a couple of awesome DT themed albums by Demons & Wizards... Demons & Wizards and Touched by the Crimson King. The band Demons & Wizards was a spin-off project of Blind Guardian. You can find both albums on RUclips. Long days and pleasant nights!
Roland Deschain I hope so. I wasn’t aware that was happening. That’s good, but they need to make as weird as the books. Otherwise, people will just call it a ripoff, even though it’s actually the inspiration.
@@adammcinturff1581 Agreed. If it does happen the weird needs to be at the centre for sure. BBC have got the rights to Hawkmoon and are planning on make it into a show as well.
So happy that you just did another SK video, and then you just say that will not be spoiler free and me (just read the first 4 books) be like "oh noooo", still, checking this video again in a few months i guess hahah
Make sure to read The Wind Through The Keyhole too. It doesn't really add much to the overall narrative, but it's definitely part of the Dark Tower series and I think it's a fun read.
If you get a chance and are looking for a new book series: I would recommend either the Greatcoats Quartet or the Spellslinger series, they're both great fantasy books and I feel you might love them
I've read it few years ago and imagine my surprised when I found out it's almost the last book in a series because there was nothing exciting or interesting in that. All i remember is that they talk a lot
I thought the way King set up himself in the book it didn't pull me out of the story I actually assume that was a hard thing to do without sounding bias he had to have been honestly introspective people are to spoiled I think this one of the greatest book series I have ever read
I feel the same way about book 6. I get why Stephen wrote it, but it all seems to pull the story in a weird maybe too weird direction. But I hope you feel the same way as me when reading the final book. It felt as, without spoilers, homecoming.
I got 33% left to go for book 7. Probably where I'll end. Dude book 5 felt to me like it was 500 pages of they're coming and in 5 pages, they came. For this book tho I feel like its gonna hit different when you read it after King passes away.
People don't like the Gunslinger??? That's my favorite one. The one person I know who also read the series also loved the first book so I thought it was universal. Aw jeez. The tone is so good though! I do love Wolves of the Calla, too. Welp, I gotta reread Dark Tower now. Love the video!
I absolutely love the Dark Tower series - I’m always excited when you upload a review of the next book. I definitely agree that SoS is messy and completely bonkers, just like the series on the whole. Definitely not my favourite but not the worst. I agree with The Gunslinger being the worst, as most fans do as well as King himself, but I still dug it and it grew on me more on reread. Excited to see if you love/hate the final eponymous book. It’s pretty divisive among the larger King fan base as well as the smaller niche of Dark Tower fans. And maybe you checking out The Wind Through The Key Hole after the fact if the interest is there. DT is a big messy batshit crazy little series that folks can pull apart and have their 100% fair share of criticisms about if it works or not but I love it. 🌹🗝
@2:52 I believe a large chunk of "The Dark Tower" novel, probably 1/5 - 1/4 was originally part of this book, and the publisher was like NOPE, can't blow your wad yet.....put ALL This in the last epic book.
I'm curious about your feelings about the cliffhanger ending of Pet Sematary. I know you're a fan of the novel, and that's one doozy of an abrupt and unresolved ending (and my personal favorite King ending ever).
This book really did feel like a fluffer in the middle of a series. At the other book's pace Songs of Susannah could have been 6 to 10 chapters. This book was the hardest one for me to get through in the series.
If you haven't read insomnia, everything's eventual, or hearts in Atlantis, it wouldn't hurt to do so before the final Dark Tower book. It's not necessary, but if you're a fan of th SK multiverse, it adds to the story.
I always find it strange that people don't like the gunslinger, I think it's one of my favourites in the series, it just has this weird way it's written that enthralls me. I all ways thought the last two books were the weakest but I think that's more because reading each book after the other gets exhausting, but I've read and listened to it that many times since 2014 that I can enjoy the last books I just shouldnt put a time limit on them XD
The drawing of the three: so, Eddie is aware of the existence of other Stephen King stories? Cool! Wolves of Calla: Callahan reads about himself and has an existential crisis? Weird, but ok, I guess it fits with the entire multiverse thing Song of Susannah: what the actual fuck
To me The Drawing of the Three is the worst of the Dark Tower books. I love The Gunslinger as the beginning point of the series and I would be happy if they faithfully adapted that book to movie. There is a history and mythos I feel that justifies King writing himself into this book, there was a large gap of time between Wizard and the Glass and The Wolves of the Callah and I love how he wrote his writing block/getting hit by a car into the series. The Tower was his obsession too and has control over him. Dont always agree with you but I love your channel. Thanks for The Kings of the Wyld review/recomendation.
I recently read all of the Dark Tower books. The 1st book was kind of hard to figure out, but it made more sense when you realize that it wasn't originally a single book but a collection of short stories (I think) and then he made them into one book. In retrospect it was more enjoyable and understandable after reading the proceeding books. The 2nd, 3d, and 4th were mind blowing and amazing! The 5th book, Wolves of Calla, was....let's just say if you like Western love stories (with a fantasy slant) you'd enjoy it, but it was kind of boring to me. In Song of Susannah, I didn't find it exceptionally weird, but probably because the weirdness had already been building up in the previous books, I became numb to it (oh yes, vampires, werewolves, slow mutants, and half mutant-half humans in yellow jackets, and Stephen King himself, why not? Add it all in and mix it around!). The last book was meant to tie everything together, but I HATED THE ENDING! It was so anti-climatic!! But as Stephen King himself said, it's not about the ending, but about the journey! In my opinion, if Stephen King were really devoted to finishing his magnum opus, he would write it all over again, but this time in a reality where Roland had picked up the echoing horn during that battle!

Just finished this book today, loved it for the most part. Some of the Susannah/Mia stuff was a bit drawn out but overall (controversy alert), I enjoyed this book more than both Wizard & Glass and Wolves of the Calla. Will start the final book later today.
0:06 Epic fail XD
Great review. Finished the DT series well over a decade ago and absolutely loved it, even book 1. All this DT talk is giving me hankering to re-read the series. SoS was probably my least favourite, but I still liked it.
For you DT fans that are also metalheads, you might be interested in a couple of awesome DT themed albums by Demons & Wizards... Demons & Wizards and Touched by the Crimson King. The band Demons & Wizards was a spin-off project of Blind Guardian. You can find both albums on RUclips.
Long days and pleasant nights!
Always like watching ur videos!!! And all ur updates too!! 😊📖
Whot bodily fluids please?
Oh boy, the saga ending is going to be messy to watch.
I think he'll like it.
Kurt Vonnegut also has some novels where the characters meet Kurt Vonnegut.
His and Michael Moorecock's interpretations of multiverse's are 2 of my favourite.
Same ^^
More people should be reading Moorecock. The Witcher owes a lot to him.
@@adammcinturff1581 Maybe if this Elric show they're making actually comes out he'll take off again.
Do you have reviews of the old books, the wizard and glass was my favorite of all the series?
He does Sai.

If you get a chance and are looking for a new book series:
I would recommend either the Greatcoats Quartet or the Spellslinger series, they're both great fantasy books and I feel you might love them
I've read it few years ago and imagine my surprised when I found out it's almost the last book in a series because there was nothing exciting or interesting in that. All i remember is that they talk a lot
The Ending is so Good.
Song of Susannah is definitely a wild ride. Honestly can't wait to hear what you think of the last book!
Jake and pair getting ready to enter the dixy pig made me cry 1st time reading. Love the dark tower
I have the original cover art for Song of Susannah. Finished the series in November!
Daniel, can I suggest the Milennium trilogy? It might not be fantasy but I highly recommend it
People don't like the Gunslinger??? That's my favorite one. The one person I know who also read the series also loved the first book so I thought it was universal. Aw jeez. The tone is so good though! I do love Wolves of the Calla, too.
Welp, I gotta reread Dark Tower now.
Love the video!
Its real diffrent from the rest of the series
@@turtleanton6539 Yeah, for sure, but I like it.
Well.... I am super curious to see the reaction to the 7th book. That should be interesting... 😮
The very first two sentences in The Gunslinger is the best start to book ever. Fight me.
If you're not first, you're last.
Book 6 is total insanity. 2 is my favorite, but 6 is a close second. Just the way it was written was brilliant
This review gave me an interesting thought:
Is Stephen King like the Hideo Kojima of books? Or is Hideo Kojima like the Stephen King of video games?
king has been working a lot longer
I have the finale book of the Dark Tower series. Only God knows when I will read it as I need to have Books 1 to 6.
The drawing of the three: so, Eddie is aware of the existence of other Stephen King stories? Cool!
Wolves of Calla: Callahan reads about himself and has an existential crisis? Weird, but ok, I guess it fits with the entire multiverse thing
Song of Susannah: what the actual fuck
Dang it Daniel! I almost choked on my lunch with that "modern art" jab.
Has anyone else seen the outsider yet? It's good so far :)
Me and the wife watched it just the other day and we loved it!!! Pretty bizarre what is going on in the story so far
Lol expo marker on paper bothered me more than it should
Are you kidding me? Am was just about to read the book. It's sitting on my shelf, waiting for me RIGHT NOW!
... That's weird. Beat it, Stephen.
The deaths in this one hit me hard
Can't wait to read this book soon 🙂😊😀🤠🌟
Know what would be rad? A video of a timeline of upcoming books you are excited for. That would be cool
so, you think the last book is going to mellow out, huh? Oh, my sweet summer child
The Dark Tower is one of my favourite book series.
Best intro sketch so far in my opinion
