Takumar 135mm vs Panagor 135mm, Can you guess the lens? (I think you can't)

  • There are many vintage 135mm lenses available. So when I was looking for an upgrade from my Panagor 135/2.8 I went with the Takumar 135/3.5. It's a nice lens, but it doesn't blow the Panagor out of the water. In fact, I have a very hard time distinguishing them. So was my upgrade worth it? Can you see the difference between these two 135mm lenses?

The Takumar appears to be a little more contrasty and has less chromatic aberration. The Takumar may have a slight edge in sharpness, but some of that may be the increase in contrast due to MUCH better coatings.

That's really interesting, I thought the difference might be more obvious. The RUclips compression might take away some of the detail from your original footage, so maybe any differences would have been more obvious on your computer. I thought at first that the Takumar was going to give more contrast but I suspect any differences I noticed could have been due to the sun changing position slightly while you swapped lenses. In some shots, like the railway crossing, the Panagor looked to have the best contrast. Great video.

Hi Tim, it surprised me too. When I bought the Takumar I expected it to be a big improvement over the Panagor, but in some cases I actually prefer the Panagor. It's true that the slight changing of the sun(or clouds) also affect the footage, but I always do my best to shoot under the exact same circumstances.

@@ohjajohh I agree, in some of the shots I thought the Panagor looked better too, albeit only by a tiny bit. Overall there wasn't much to choose between the two, making the Panagor look like a bit of a bargain.

Takumar is a little more contrasty but over all the Panagor does well.
