    Well made video. Followed this guide and dropped my subframe and did an oil pan gasket. I've got new suspension parts as well, as my original bushings are completely shot, being 24 years old. Me and a friend were able to drop the subframe in about 8 hours!

    You were very correct about how difficult it was to get the steering shaft separated!! I just dropped my subframe yesterday!! Never want to do that job again. Fortunately I’m upgrading everything while it’s down lmao 😂

      I felt like I had just run 2 marathons back to back after the fight to get mine off!! Glad you got yours off, and agreed, I’m all about doing everything so I never have to do that again😂

      @@griffengardner Yep! I am completely rebuilding the suspension and subframe. Hopefully it’s not as difficult to put it back together lmao 🤣 going to put in a new coupler joint too.

    You made waaaaay too much work for yourself. You don't need to mess with the steering rack at all. Just support it and all you have to do is remove the two bolts that attach it to the subframe. Remove the bolts that attach the suspension arm bushing. Remove the suspension arm from the brake caliper ball joints. Done.

    Great video, you make it look so easy. I really need to do this on my “new to me” 97 m3 track car. Previous owner did the rear subframe but the front has never been touched after 25 years and 160k.

      You know, most people would start with something reasonable. Like maybe sparkplugs, or air filter? Around here we pull the subframes first😂 but heck yeah man, gotta save all the M3s!

      The only special tool you’ll really need is the engine support bar, which I bought from Harbor Freight! Everything else can be done with basic hand tools!

    Would using anti seize on the steering shaft help for future removal?

      Yes without a doubt, I would put a dab of anti seize on the splines. That was the problem here, it’s direct aluminum to steel spline contact and the splines had essentially welded themselves to the shaft.

    You sure someone didnt just spot weld the steering rack? Its very hard to work with and someone might have spot welded it for safety since getting it back on is a BITCH, actually working with steering rack coupler is already annoying af

      You know that’s actually a very fair idea, it’s completely possible someone did because the previous owner mentioned to me that the steering shaft had just been replaced, so it’s quite possible. Good news is with enough brute force it came off but it was absolutely awful. This video shortens it but I kid you not I was prying and fighting with it for almost an hour and a half in an oily sludgy mess. And yep, it was also just as hard to put back on until I got a long object and used a hammer on the other end to slowly work it back on. Not BMW’s finest and just one more reason I like Condor Speed Shop’s steering shaft way more!!

    First
