I had the original OP-1 and when i first heard about them, i was every excited. I bought one and used it for a while, then it started gathering dust. I stopped using it. I really liked the playful sequencers on them.. and i kind of miss those.. but i've got a few samplers and small 4 and 8 track recorders.. so i thought someone else would get more out of it and so i sold it. Do i miss it? Looking at how you use your field is great.. But i think what i'm getting from this video more thn anything else is the sense of experimentation, using whatever is to hand and mashing everything up to create something else. I like the way you do that and it's something i need to try more of with the different bits of gear that i have from the past and the present. Bravo Bro.
I know you what you mean. I have the 0p1, Sp 404, Mpc 2000xl and Mpc 60. I make my rounds. I spend months on one then move to the next one. The one thing I love about the 0p1’s and I’ve had both, is how easy it is to just pick it up and make something. All of the machines are pretty easy honestly, but something about the 0p just seems easy. Especially! When it comes to sampling. That’s really all I do with it. And yes, I’ve been shaping this philosophy of mine when it comes to creating for years now. Like I mentioned in another comment, it really changed my life when I stumbled across free jazz/free improvisation. Before that I had no idea that you could make a creative mess, I thought that only existed in painting. When I discovered this concept and I ended up practicing it within my beats. And it’s been a slow evolution to where I am now, but just getting weird and leaving it will go a long ways. And it’s cool folks can relate to that idea.
Very inspiring stuff! Thanks for sharing your process. I love listening to beats, but I’m always interested in the thoughts behind sound selection/playing. That bit about the influence of free improvisation was gold 🙌🏼
Thank you. Yeah free improvisation changed everything about my view of music making. Before I experienced it I had no idea that it was ok to basically do whatever you feel. I was always hung up on the idea that things had to be perfect and that’s just not the case.
I appreciate you brother. It’s been a long time coming and took several years for my brain to understand the very simple and subtle idea that your very own unique touch is the answer you’re looking for in your creative work. It’s too easy to get caught up in making the music that inspires you. I can only describe the feeling as being born again, when you realize that your unique voice is on par with the your idols. #dontconfrom let that freak flag fly 🤙

Caught yourself trying too hard…. I love it.
I’m feeling the longer format videos, your style is wild inspiring to watch come together. It’s always jammin without conforming 👊🏾
