  • I went to Wakayama, Japan and wandered around Wakayama Castle (c. 1580s) and its associated park. The area is full of gorgeous little paths under the trees and beside ponds, where koi fish and ducks swim around and quaint wooden bridges span reconstructed stone moats full of green water. And of course you can go into the castle itself, as well. I paid the entrance fee and stepped inside. There I saw the surprising and fascinating little museum, featuring 16th century (and later) armor, weapons, personal carriages, written letters, and other implements of Japanese society at the time. And the views from the top of Wakayama Castle were truly arresting - after seeing nothing but trees and buildings down below, suddenly you're looking all the way across Wakayama Bay to Awaji Island!
Oh, and the castle gave me one hundred yen, then took it away. How zen.
