extraordinary...I've seen every tour of gino since the 1975 'storm at sunup' in toronto...thru three years ago in atlanta, with his current band. you nailed craney. you nailed graham. would you like to play some sessions? we need to connect.
I have watched this video dozens of times and it never fails to astonish me what an AMAZING drummer this dude is...this is nothing short of a clinic on how drums should be played properly!!!
A while ago I made the comment that my eyes couldn't keep up with what you where playing. Well my eye's have caught up I must be mentally challenged. Watching videos of drummer's in particular has helped me out alot.. I'm more in tune with what instruments are being played. THANKYOU!
Drums are a pretty easy instrument to follow, once you understand what to watch for. Now figuring out what a complex drummer is doing just by listening can be difficult when there is nothing to see.
Brother, if someone's not paying you for you're drumming, then you missed your calling, you were born to drum, and that's meant as a compliment. I'm literally bummed if you're not drumming for a living. Your a beast.
Wow. This man just is an assassin. Would like to suggest him do Love of my life. So many fantastic Vanelli songs. And this gentlemen just frankly kills everything he plays.
I got backstage in 1978 by showing the guard a portrait of Gino I did in art school. He was in Boston, MA. at the Music Hall. Gino was so appreciative of the gifted portrait he invited me and my college roommate to after party. The concert and especially Mark Craney just blew me away! I had only played drums for about 4 years at that time, but when I met Craney at the after party, he was the one I wanted to talk to. He explained to me that he wasn't actually left handed, but that his dad bought him his first drum set and set it up backwards!!! He just never opted to set it up differently from that time forward. The world lost a drumming genius when he passed. R.I.P. But I have to say, Alan, you're every bit as good in this cover of Mark's chops. Your drum sound matches perfectly too. Most impressive and enjoyable to watch!!! Thanks for posting... I'm now a subscribed fan!
What a great story! And thank you for confirming what I had heard as well that Mark wasn't a leftie but played that way 'cause his father set up his drums that way and he never changed them. I had heard that many times, but now you confirmed it from the man himself. Consider yourself lucky to have met and talked to him. From what I hear he was a pretty private person and let the chops speak for themselves - which they always did. I regret never getting to meet Mark, but sometimes I swear I can feel his presence when I play to songs he drummed on. And thank you for your kind words. Great post.
Been listening to this song since I bought the cassette in 1980. Hundreds of road trips and driving to high school and college. Just now realizing I know exactly one word of this song and have been singing along not knowing any of the words except the title.
I think Mark would feel it to be a great compliment to himself to watch and hear you play. I had the privilege of hanging at his home in Sioux Falls in the early 80’s and getting some lessons and jamming with him. He personally was a nice guy and standing behind him while he was soloing was a real treat. I’ll be watching the rest of your videos. You are a very good drummer. Great job. 👍👍👏👏
Hey Alan.... just a short note to say hello.Hope life is treating you well and that you are enjoying soaking up all that beautiful Florida sunshine. Hope to c u swinging those sticks again real soon !!!
Great job! When I first heard Gino, sometime around 1975, I was mesmerized by the music arrangements and the drum parts (I'm a drummer). Got every album and worked on nailing all those great tunes Mark Craney and many other great players created. Haven't heard anything close to Gino's creativity since. You nailed the tune, love the hi hat sound and the tom fills/sound. When is Brother to Brother and Where Am I Going Coming?
Again great work, Alan. Vannelli is one of these artists where covering any of his tracks on drums ( or any instrument ) would be an exciting journey and experience in of itself!
Great job.......very interesting to watch the drum part being played......kind of makes you feel like you are watching it being performed live. I think Gino's music is somewhat neglected, so thanks for posting!!
Thanks BebopEngineer. And you are right! Gino is an underrated master. Lots of people missing out on his magic. Aren't you glad we are both here on this earth, at this time, while he is alive and still touring and making magic? I know I am.
So, as a fan of mark and Gino, you have tasteful recreation here. I just wish I could have seen it. Please change the camera angle, otherwise it’s great. Thanks
I had a Superstar kit like that back (Mahogany stain, as I recall) in the 80s as well. They were GREAT kits, and this one sounds really good. Brings back memories, and you nailed the track. Great job!
Wow!!! You are a really great drummer!!! Thank you so much for the video!!! Mark Craney was is and always will be one of my greatest heros!!! MORE OF THAT!!!
He certainly was an underrated drummer. Too bad there aren't more videos of him playing. Thanks for the kind words, Philipp. He's always been one of my favorites.
I don't have a clue why anyone would dislike this video and your playing. That was amazing! I'm a guitar player, but I have always had a passion for listening to great drummers, you are a great drummer!!! In my opinion, without a great drummer and bassist, no need to have a band, travel solo.
What a drummer you are!... I love this song, I´ve played it Live (Guitar and vocals) with a backing track, seeing you playing it I realize how difficoult is to play the drums in many Vanelli songs, congratulations!
I am sure Gino would enjoy your work, especially knowing he began as a drummer! Great work! Love how so much of Gino's work was driven by a great drum/percussion presence.
Gino always had the drums up front. Clear, powerful, melodic and driving the song. It's one of the reasons I love his music. And his employment of stellar drummers contributed to the overall sound.
Nailed it again, Alan. You make it look effortless, while driving a load off power into those skins! Plus we can't forget how cool you look doing it with sunglass. :~) Love your drum set. I sold mine years ago when my 3 year old thought they made great coloring paper.
WOW!!! If your going to cover the "Great One" Mark Craney with Gino Vanelli, that is the way to do it! All kidding aside you are a monster player in your own right to be able to cover these GV songs with such authenticity. I only wish you would put the camera above or behind so we can finally see what is really going on with Marks hands and feet as well as you have obviously have. On a scale of 1 to 10 buddy you are an 11!!!!!!
Remember Mark was a lefty. Playing from right to left. I had to dissect and rearrange things to play the parts as a right-handed drummer. It won't look the same as him playing.
Alan - If Mark Craney where still with us he would tell you - Kid you're really clean throughout the whole kit! Never mind how good the tama's sound. Nice room to by the way, I like it... I remember Mark when playing with JT, it brings back early music class (1971) memories. Thanks for your postings! Paul Sheehan Rhode Island
Note for note, dude!!!! I wish I could hear your drums. I use a Zoom Q4 camera for my drum covers...it has a 1/8" miniplug input that you can connect directly from a mixer board (with an adapter). It works great--no distortion whatsoever. I love how you inner cut footage from Gino's concert in 1979. I was at that concert!!! Mark Craney was sooooooooooooo great!!!!!!
extraordinary...I've seen every tour of gino since the 1975 'storm at sunup' in toronto...thru three years ago in atlanta, with his current band. you nailed craney. you nailed graham. would you like to play some sessions? we need to connect.
Wtf!one of the most technical songs, and this is spot on!
Thanks, so much fun to play that song.
Mark Craney was a Drum God! Its a shame his health limited his career. One of the best ever. You do justice to his memory. Great Cover!!
This is soul searching drumming!!! Very very inspiring ALAN BADIA!!!!
I have watched this video dozens of times and it never fails to astonish me what an AMAZING drummer this dude is...this is nothing short of a clinic on how drums should be played properly!!!
yes:HIS DRUMMING IS ABSOLUTELY AWESOME,INSPIRING AND A TRIBUTE TO GINO!!!
BADIA is a ZERO-mistake precision drummer!!!
wow. speechless. Mark would probably laugh at you you playing all those parts he improvised. So perfectly brilliant. awesome. Just brilliant.
What a drummer, Craney would be proud.
That is amazing!! Brother to Brother is one of my all time favorite albums. I am a drummer myself and I am blown away that you have every lick down
Just my opinion but Alan does best at jazz. Please take this as a compliment. You have my utmost respect.
I love jazz and all types of music.
Bravo! Bravo! Bravo!
Bro this is SO AWESOME! YOU HAVE EVERY SINGLE FILL LOCKED DEAD ON!!!!!!! LOVE IT BRO!!!!
Great Job Alan and a big Tama Sound. Thanks

Marco Minnemann sounds like a difficult drummer to listen to and understand. You would no better than I but he appears to be quite unique.
Brother, if someone's not paying you for you're drumming, then you missed your calling, you were born to drum, and that's meant as a compliment. I'm literally bummed if you're not drumming for a living. Your a beast.
"ALL" great drummers dig Gino's stuff ....nice job amigo !
I've met Mark a few times - and he was a good of a person as he was a drummer -- RIP Mark
I've heard that from a lot of people. Wish I would have met him.

Another outstanding performance. Rock solid, the way the song must played. Enjoyed watching.
Been listening to this song since I bought the cassette in 1980. Hundreds of road trips and driving to high school and college. Just now realizing I know exactly one word of this song and have been singing along not knowing any of the words except the title.
RIP Mark Craney. He'd be flattered. Well done! I had a similar 1979 Luddie in natural maple...
Best drum covers...bar none! Amazing talent man..Jeff Porcaro would be proud!
I love watching you play.
