This has changed a lot for me. The Hu track was at the end of a list of music I didn't know much about. So I hit D/L. It is part of a mix. My download window scrolls about 15 feet now. I will be 70 years old on friday 13. This mix will be on my hd by then. I will have a party. hope my neighbours enjoy !!
The original version of this song holds a *lot* of memories and emotions for me, so I tend to be very critical of any attempt to cover it. But this version is remarkable. Powerful. Totally evokative of the original and yet also very unique. When the bowed instrument came in (I'm sorry, I don't know what it's called) it soared in the same way that Art Garfunkle's voice soars, and I stopped breathing so I could hear it better. Just beautiful.
I love that there seems to be a movement in Asian countries, to preserve and revive their cultural musical instruments and styles. I always thought it was beautiful and unique, so seeing musicians now pushing back on the complete adoption of western musical instruments is gratifying.
I think the term "The West" was invented by autocrats to try to tar everything good from the lands where humans have achieved stable democracy with the all the bad things that the conservatives do similarly to autocrats whenever they occasionally grab power. Humans = humans. Beauty everywhere can be admired, but autocracy is nothing to be proud of.
mao revolutionists and cccp tries very much to destroy what old culture still exists - what is allowed to go on, is used for tourism. Do they still have real buddhists, daosist temples... traditional opera, and old style neighbourhoods? i dare to say even their martial arts styles kung fu aside of "competition show dancing 'wushu'" is preseved only in hongkong and foreign counrtries that had students learning in china from the now dead masters. So when i see these girls playing tradtitional instruments, and tradition songs in traditional warderobe sometimes (beautiful, much more so than modern shit the girls wear world wide) ...then i automatically assume it is outside of PRC. Singapore? taiwan? ...or expatriated chinese In sanfrancisco chinatown. If you look at the streets of shanghai and beijin these days.. just cars... cameras.. and cheap consume. Notthing of value. Chinese play european classical music better than the europeans... but few do play their own music as well.
I think the most beautiful part is the blending of the cultures. Honoring their traditional roots while adapting Western music. Music is one of the universal languages and it is beautiful how it can bring us together, even from across the globe. Perhaps, even across the universe.
