Before this performance they performed “Boy With Luv” this entire SNL performance was basically their comeback performance when they dropped the MOTS: Persona album.
The MAMA Persona performance was at the end of the year (as all their award show performances are) while the album dropped April of that year.
And Mic Drop came out in 2017 while this performance was 2019 (to Blaze’s point 😂)

This was in April of last year right after Map of the Soul: Persona came out. They did Boy With Luv and then Mic Drop. They were jet lagged af and they all felt like they didn't really do their best in the behind episode. But I watched this on the Sunday after it aired and immediately fell into the rabbit hole. In fact my comment on this video asking about Jungkook is where it started. Someone linked me a Fake Love fancam. 💜💜💜
This is how I became ARMY too! BWL popped up on my YT playlist and I watched it, having never seen nor heard of BTS, but wow, that beautiful guy with the blue hair and amazing voice. And the dance! Then this Mic Drop performance, and the choreography blew me away! And then I thought, I wonder if they've done anything else...hello, rabbit hole.

and Idol dance cover popped up on my feed and I watched it, so I looked for the song in youtube to download it, then I found the video and I watched it like 6 times nonstop. Something I really love about this performance is that they're on a much smaller stage than we usually see and much smaller than practice and they still managed to make this one of the best performances of Mic Drop

The boys wanted to show their best and they killed it despite the small stage. I was so proud and wanted to shout encore when I was viewing that night. They were all great but I thought J-Hope really took the stage with this performance.😄
All US TV shows’ stages are freaking tiny. They have to scale down a lot and more prone to injuries/ mistakes but BTS has aced all of them. Finally this year they got Central station as their deserved stage :)

I personally like mic drop performance of mama 2017 the most. This isn't bad but American stages aren't good enough . Their stages are too small . That's why BTS couldn't execute some certain dance moves properly .

@@musammatakter3278 I also really enjoyed the SNL performance. MAMA 2017 was amazing in its own way, but it was harder to see them and much harder to hear their voices. In this performance, we could hear them SO, so well bc the back track was basically nonexistent (hallelujah!!!), we could see them super well bc the camerawork was close and the stage was small, and despite everyone insisting that they were tired, they put on a KILLER performance that was unique from all their previous MIC Drop iterations. Very minimal, with swag through the roof and some of my favorite looks on them ever.
This is an interview stage. If they got the stadiums in America it would work the same. The thing is over there - the award shows are held in stadiums. While here it’s just in a theater type stage.
I like this one better because you see them very well and hear them too. The stadiums are where you get to see the art and a show

They are not use to all of this awesomeness. LOL. Western artist rarely put on these types of single stage performances. So cameramen are so not ready.
@@crimson__rain_n honestly I don't find the Korean camera work to be any better half the time. some channels/shows are better than others, but it can be totally wack. the MAMAs can be downright bizarre, they will film literally nothing sometimes (see the 2018 perf of Anpanman).

You can tell how PROFESSIONAL they are bc they had to adapt to a much smaller performance area (just look at size of stage they perform on in stadiums or international award shows) . They still killin it, no matter what space they in! 💜🔥🤗💜

This was one of the first performances of BTS I saw and the time of this comeback was my first time getting to know them… and after watching so many performances of Mic Drop this one is still by far the best one for me. We can see them so close and hear them so well. See how much hard work and passion they put in their performances. Also this J Hope always hits different, he is the definition of swag and passion here. Love how he moves!

Their SNL performances were amazing, they got so much praise and acknowledgement from the general public too because they were live, actually singing, dancing and absolutely killed both songs. They got so many comments too about how diverse they were and also how people could tell how hardworking they were too. Even I kept rewatching the dance break at the end because even though I've seen it so many times like you guys said lol it was just freaking awesome
Yes, you summed it up perfectly! These performances were the first time I had seen or heard of BTS, last June, and I was swept away down the rabbit hole! Dance is my thing and I love that these three guys appreciate and comment on their dance so much!

I'm only 11 days older than JK and I've been singing on stages since my 2nd grade. But somewhere in between, I lost my way, performing didn't excite me, and my passion for music started to fade away. I didn't realize how I've been wasting it all until I stumbled upon BTS and JK in 2014. JK has been an insipiration from then. Things started to change and I'm back on track.
I'll always be thankful for that.

That is when I discovered BTS!! April 13, 2019. It is my re-birthday, I remember it like it was yesterday. I thought V looked a nut wearing yellow pants and blue hair. Suga was wearing hospital scrubs with a tactical vest. I showed my niece, who was 7, and she thought it was weird. Look where I am now. Blue haired V is the whole snack aisle. Suga is my bias. I sleep with Chimmy. BTS has taken my soul and I am fine with that.

The backtrack on this performance was way way too low. So they definitely had to carry the whole song with their raw vocals. On one hand, though, they showed the world they truly do dance and sing live. And no one but ARMY would have truly noticed. I loved this performance so much and the hype was insane before that night. It was so so good and right before the Speak Yourself tour began. 🥺🥺💜💜

I'm curious as to why you have this opinion about the back track. IMO, performances are the BEST when the back track isn't there! We can actually hear them! I'm not sure why it would be a problem for them to have to "carry" the song with their raw vocals. After all, they sing and rap live 99% of the time anyway, even with the back track playing (exceptions being when the choreo is just too complex [Boy Meets Evil, most of Serendipity] or a program takes the choice away from them), so they are fully capable of going without it. They did do an entire HYYH concert with a live band, after all, which meant even less back track than you saw here.
@@curvytangerine 100% agree with you. They absolutely have raw vocals 99% of the time. That, however, doesn't mean that the backtrack isn't helpful for a live performance when it comes to strategic places to take your breath. It helps to have that in moments when you need to back off your full vocals for the sake of taking that breath, which is 100% why Jimin had to suck in so hard to reach that falsetto and also why Jin jumped in late so he could breathe first. For a vocalist who stands still through a performance, it's fine. But for performers like BTS who are moving in ways that literally constrict the diaphragm, it's very hard to at least not have the cushion choice of backtrack when they feel they need to save the power vocals. If you compare this performance to even the audio from Boy With Luv, you'll notice it definitely was by accident that the audio is so low. It was FANTASTIC performance. But it definitely left them vulnerable.
@@vikzytoria Hmm... I guess it's just personal preference. I don't feel like they look vulnerable at all. Oddly I saw Jin receive some criticism in the original video's comment section for skipping a bar here and there, but no one seemed to care when other members did it, lol. In any case, the majority of viewers weren't bothered. I think it's widely understood that when performers are singing and dancing at the same time, they need to take more breaths, and most viewers will give them leeway for that.
Those breaths and those pauses are being taken anyway when the back track is playing, and if the back track is so loud that those things are covered up, it's _way_ too loud. Of course I don't mind a back track if it's at the proper volume, but overly-loud tracks are a plague. Probably why it's refreshing to me when there's nothing in the way of hearing the artist's voice.
And you may know this, so I apologize if I'm telling you something that's obvious to you! But I'm nearly certain that the reason the track was basically absent in this performance is because SNL prefers artists to put on performances that are as _live_ as possible, either with a band and live background vocalists (like they did with Boy With Luv) or minimal back track. There were a couple infamous instances of lip-syncers being busted on SNL in the past and the program did NOT appreciate it.
@@curvytangerine haha no I totally understand what you mean and I agree with you. This performance is one of my favorites. But even compared to the BWL audio, this one was noticeably off. I love it, though. I dont think any criticism is deserved. Jin did what was necessary to maintain his breathing. I've seen harsh criticism on Jimin too and those are armchairs that def can't do an 8 count a sing a bar lol. I watch this performance at least once a month. No one performs at their level.
Vickytøria their Snl performances are how I discovered them. I mean I knew who they were but never paid attention or watched anything. I was blown away. Unfortunately snl took both of the performances down 😭
That was an awesome performance! Love all the change ups that they made and adding more to it. Jhope, dude love watching him dance. The other thing I notice is since their English has got better the English words they say have also become more clear. Love every second! 👍😁

Just like me, I really loved that part when Namjoon did that 'wooah', if you could notice Jimin held Namjoon a little on his back to prevent big movements. Bc The stage was way much smaller..
I remember freaking out watching the SNL performances. The colors for both performances were so vibrant and BTS was amazing!! This reaction was fun to watch & brought back those “first time” memories.
