    I Had several 4wd quads over a 22 year period. Now that I have my first SXS (KRX) the question is driving on pavement. Pavement with the 600-850cc quads I had was a drive belt death notice in a very short time. Dealers in my area tend to say (for all makes) just don’t hot rod on the street and you’ll be fine. Independent repair shops who for the most part have owners and or mechanics who spent considerable time at dealers say you will shorten the belt life (especially on anything in the way of a performance machine) by at least 50-60% if you spend a lot of time on pavement even if you drive conservatively. What’s the thought on this?

    Good video! Well said. If you learn from this video your belt will last a long time. Both my 900 and 1000 turbo have over 2000 miles on the same belt. Clean, blow out the dust on the clutches. If you jump your UTV a lot you will mis-align the trans/engine, which will eat belts.

    I'm mostly a dune rider. Ain't no avoiding blowing a belt in the dunes. You're always on the throttle (if you ride like we do), always on a heavy load being that you're in the sand, always creating heat even with a blow hole fan, I have a prefilter on my intakes for motor and clutches, I've followed both philosophies of break in for the belt (#1 nice and easy, #2 hard and fast), obviously can't use low gear in the dunes, it's just a fact of UTV ownership that you will blow a belt. The key is, you need to be prepared for when it comes. Tools, gloves, spare belt, and plenty of beer! Haha

    So while i was riding the other day my Kawasaki Teryx 4 2020 model started smoking between the driver and passenger seat. Then after that it started making this tapping sound for about 500 yards then it stopped completely. Now when i start it it makes the tapping sound no matter if its even in neutral and the side by side will not move. Do you think it was probably the belt???

  • @biknjak
    @biknjak 2 года назад +2

    I'm new to this, but....
    Why do sxs's use snowmobile belt/cvt technology instead of a "wet"/ geared transmission? Gears work great for motorcycles, cars, trucks, 4x4's, etc, and you don't have to constantly carry around, change, overheat and destroy belts. I don't get the whole belt advantage over gears.

    • @mitchrichardson744
      @mitchrichardson744 2 года назад +2

      Because they are fixable in the field mostly. Plus it's a lightweight transmission for its strength. Honda Talon has a dual clutch automatic, no belt. And maybe the Yamaha has a geared transmission?

    • @biknjak
      @biknjak 2 года назад

      @@mitchrichardson744 Thank you for the explanation. I do understand the weight issue as sxs's have a much greater power to weight ratio than traditional 4x4's. I just bought a RZR Trail 900 (50"), and am trying to learn how they work. It just seems there is more talk of concern and hassle about belt transmissions than you'd ever hear about a wet transmission. I guess the potential hassels are worth the weight issue. Anyway, thanks Mitch. See you out there!

    This is one of the most Idiotic systems Invented. They should not be using a rubber belt to drive. These utv's they should have been shaft driven . Or possibly chain driven... these Belts are a waste of money and the designer should have never kept his job.
