I think Messi asked that question because during his childhood Serie A was the toughest and most competitive league. All of his idols and players he looked up to like Xavi admired the Italians. The greatest defenders were Italians and there is still a nostalgia of those days, thats why he wanted to know, even if he knew the times had changed.

They can score whenever they want. Sounds crazy but it really was like this. Watching highlights from 1997 to 2008 and watching highlights today made me realize again how exceptional these two were.
They would have never scored as much between 1997-2008, football, referees, defenders, trainings, and technology was so much different. Today even average players score 20 goals each season; so all time greats like Messi and CR7 obviously score twice as much.
Don't talk to me when you haven't watched football back then. CR7 was the Premier League's best goal scorer in 2008 with 31 goals as a winger. That alone makes your comment "they wouldn't have scored as much" irrelevant because they actually did. And that was Cr7 when he wasn't even in his prime. In 2007 he had 17 goals and 8 assists as a midfielder and 18 goals and 7 assists in 2009. Mess before even hitting 20 years was destroying defenders in 2007 and 2008.
