- Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen has proclaimed Frederik the new King of Denmark.
Ms Frederiksen proclaimed the King three times from the balacony at Christiansborg Palace.
It comes after Queen Margarethe abdicated the throne on New Year’s Eve.
On the first day of their reign, Mary and Frederik and the entire royal family will participate in the Danish Parliament’s formal celebration of the succession of the throne.
The new King and Queen will also be marked spiritually in a celebratory church service at Aarhus Cathedral on Sunday.

This is a display of power over the masses, much like in Russia and contemporary and former dictatorship(s) like North Korea. There are many more people than those in the streets of Copenhagen who do not want any continuation of this “royal” charade. AND there were demonstrations against the monarchy of course not recorded, why? . One thing I am a bit surprised about is that as far as I can tell, no one has breathed a word about the fact that for the first time in the history of Denmark, the accession proclamation was made by a woman. I guess it's just so normal for them to have a woman prime minister that no one even noticed?
Well the our PM Mette Frederiksen is quite unpopular at the moment. Her proclaiming him King is just seen as procedure and has no political ramifications here in Denmark.

The rules has been for the last 3-4 times, when a monark dies, the prime minister , talks for the new one on the balcon. Our prime minister for the last several years are Mette Frederiksen, which is Leader of the socialdemocracy party, which has been the biggest in al my lifetime.
The last year, she has been Leader of a three party coalition, which are loosing voters all three. So she is not more unpopulare, than the other leaders. Just a minor correction.

It was an unexpectedly moving movement . Leading me to wish that a senior type of Royal Courtier /Herald of the Danish Royal Family , had been deputed to make the Proclamation , not some Prime Minister of the day . I wish the new King and Queen all the very best . What a beautiful and simplistic ceremony. Unlike the British Coronation for their King’s and Queen’s, Denmark doesn’t practice that ritual anymore.
Since 1849 when the Kingdom became a constitutional monarchy it’s the Prime Minister who has the honor of formally proclaiming the new King. They will stand at the balcony of Christiansborg Palace and, in the case of the new King, say three times turning in each direction (mimicking the compass) Queen Margrethe II has abdicated…Long Live His Majesty King Fredrik X! And then lead the masses in a nine fold hurrah. The new monarch then delivers their maiden address and unveils their royal motto.
And Denmark does have a crown and other regalia but that’s kept in museums. Only on the death of a King or Queen are the Crown Jewels put on public display near or on top the casket.
