After Brexit: 'Should we go home?'

- In the 24 hours after Brexit, the Guardian visited members of the Polish community in Plymouth, an area that voted overwhelmingly to leave the EU in 2016. Margaret, who works full time in a children's home and runs a Polish school at the weekends, says she feels confusion and despair - but also defiance. About 3.6 million EU citizens live in the UK, and Poland is the most common country of origin for foreign nationals. Polish is the second most widely spoken language in Britain, according to the last census

It's the other way around too. A mate of me is from UK and spent all his adult life in EU. So uncertain too what will happen now
I suspect this will wary from country to country, but this was British, not European, Leave vote which was partly fuelled by resentment against immigrants, xenophobia or in marginal cases outright racism.
@@definitelynotadam Yea! I was saying it affects both EU peeps in UK and UK peeps in EU. Nobody wins really, everyone is confused what will happen now.
@intempify I was not saying that? Just saying it's bad for Brits too, they can't live and travel freely in EU anymore.
He can still stay in the EU, just in the same way Americans and Canadians stay in the EU.
tinyruin why should it be a problem. EU, the union is the problem, not Europe or Europeans. Why should any country send back hard working, completely integrated people ? This is what EU was trying to make people believe. I do despise EU on that score alone to begin with.

I am British and married to a Pole, the whole brexit thing has caused us both a huge amount of worry and pain.
My wife has been here for 15 years and made this her home. Now she feels disenfranchised and unsafe. EU citizens have lived and worked here for decades, paid taxes and contributed. They have no voice, no certainties.
More and more I hear negative comments from work colleagues, but when I mention that I'm married to one of those "bloody foreigners" it's always "oh we don't mean you"! Who exactly do you mean then?!?

I am Dutch (with 1/4 Polish blood thanks to my WW2 soldier grandad who faught under British flag as so many Poles did), married to a Brit and have lived in the UK for 13 years now. Brexit has me worried sick. I get the 'we don't mean you' all the time, too. I have my settled status now, but that was a complete nightmare and caused lots of stress to get (app did not work on my phone, had to send my passport off as well as some other paperwork and then had to wait for weeks for an answer), and you get no evidence of said status. Eventhough the government has said nothing will change for EU citizens living in the UK, it also said that EU citizens were 'automatically granted status' when you had to apply for it, it wasn't given automatically. So to say I don't trust the government when it comes to Brexit is an understatement. This is my home. I have no plans to leave. I hope nobody will make me and break up my marriage.
Your wife shouldn’t feel like she isn’t wanted or unsafe.

I'm American. I've lived in the UK for over 20 years. Some people are now glaring at me when they hear my American accent. I am a dual British/American citizen. While I had occasional unpleasant interactions with English people in the past, things seem to have changed for the worse. I say quite English people deliberately. I intend to visit Wales and Scotland over the next couple of years to see if the atmosphere is better.
What kind of unpleasant things have English people said to you for being American?
I'm from Wales and we have no issue with Americans in our area. A Canadian has moved into the area recently and she tells us everyone is nice to her and she's nice in return. So it could be your attitude? Maybe the issue is you and not the nation you're blaming. But that being said, it might be whichever specific area you are in.
We have no problem with Americans. They can't help it.
Interesting to hear that. Do you really think Brexiteers are glaring at you? I'd expect that they admire the US and adore Trump?
Or is it maybe because of Trump (in a different way)? I think some Europeans are put off by Americans because of Trump and his hostile behaviour towards European nations. I've got to shamefully admit this is true for me to some degree. I try to suppress it and not be unfair towards individuals, though.
In my opinion Brexit is a shame, not primarily because the UK is breaking away from the EU, but because it divided the UK and because of nationalist sentiments bubbling up.
Crazy story. We all realise that the USA are our friends and that will not change unless people try to sow the seeds of miss-information like you are doing. Are you for or against the EU ?

British citizenship is mentally expensive. In any sane country, the cost would just cover administration, but Britain effectively sells citizenship. It costs more than a thousand pounds.
By way of contrast I paid less than seventy pounds for my Czech citizenship application. I know that admin costs in the UK are higher, but not that much.
John Smith. I understand how the teacher feel. Like it or not the EU gave the word European meaning. Now they felt like one people, it was a new nationality, greater than been Polish, or German, or French. Now with the UK out of the EU it don't feel that way anymore.

These people are exaggerating. If they're UK residents, they have nothing to worry about.
An important reason for the large immigration to GB from other EU countries compared to other EU states, is that most Europeans know a little english and many speak excellent english, hence it's easier to integrate in the UK compared to other EU countries.
The main reason was that the other EU states wanted to delay freedom of movement for new member states until they have somewhat caught up economically in order to avoid brain drain while the UK said "nope, no delay, we open the border now".
@@swanpride Interesting. Yes, GB economy has benefitted from high skilled labor in the modern economy and there's been a brain drain for other countries.

@It Big For Username Those numbers mean nothing out of context. Percentage is what counts. The fact remains that the UK is overwhelmingly white (86%).

Become. a British citizen?
I know that it is hard for some young Europeans to get their settled status because they have to prove 5 years work, but many employers don't or cannot provide the required evidence. It should be automatic, if you are here by a certain date, you can remain.
You don't have to prove 5 years work, you have to prove 5 years residency. So council tax bills, utility bills, mortgages, contracts from your landlord etc. For the latest EU election I got my polling card from the council, and a letter asking if I wanted to vote here or in the Netherlands, where I am from (but I've lived in the UK for 13 years). They know who lives where. The settled status should have just come through the post just like the polling card did. There should be no need to apply and risk getting rejected. May said that EU citizens would 'automatically be granted settled status', but that's not true.
You can remain even if you arrive in the UK on New Year's Eve 2020. You register your pre-settled status and can stay and work.
You do realize, if you aren't working illegally you will be given a payslip of ANY kind which will prove you working here!!!
project fear. One year on what has changed. E.u. guys can stay if they want to. More than welcome. As for flags.. poland fly they flag. All this is about is control of numbers thats all. If you have the skills we need than fine. If you dig ditches than sorry we have enough people to do that.
Britain won WW2 standing defiantly alone! Apart from thirty five thousand Polish airmen, soldiers and sailors who'd made their way across there so yeah there's that.
And the Russians, Americans, Canadians, Australians, Indians and a few others besides, but yes, we did it all by ourselves. We KNOW this because it has been shouted at us relentlessly for 75 years.

Not at all. Poles suport EU in 85%. That is highest % in whole EU. Polish governmant has many against EU but They love EU money so They will cooperate... with some resistance but will cooperate.
In Austria, the right wingers always had a eye on leaving the EU but after seeing how much went wrong in the UK, they abandoned the plan.
