After Brexit: 'Should we go home?'

  • In the 24 hours after Brexit, the Guardian visited members of the Polish community in Plymouth, an area that voted overwhelmingly to leave the EU in 2016. Margaret, who works full time in a children's home and runs a Polish school at the weekends, says she feels confusion and despair - but also defiance. About 3.6 million EU citizens live in the UK, and Poland is the most common country of origin for foreign nationals. Polish is the second most widely spoken language in Britain, according to the last census

tinyruin why should it be a problem. EU, the union is the problem, not Europe or Europeans. Why should any country send back hard working, completely integrated people ? This is what EU was trying to make people believe. I do despise EU on that score alone to begin with.

I am British and married to a Pole, the whole brexit thing has caused us both a huge amount of worry and pain.
My wife has been here for 15 years and made this her home. Now she feels disenfranchised and unsafe. EU citizens have lived and worked here for decades, paid taxes and contributed. They have no voice, no certainties.

I am Dutch (with 1/4 Polish blood thanks to my WW2 soldier grandad who faught under British flag as so many Poles did), married to a Brit and have lived in the UK for 13 years now. Brexit has me worried sick. I get the 'we don't mean you' all the time, too. I have my settled status now, but that was a complete nightmare and caused lots of stress to get (app did not work on my phone, had to send my passport off as well as some other paperwork and then had to wait for weeks for an answer), and you get no evidence of said status. Eventhough the government has said nothing will change for EU citizens living in the UK, it also said that EU citizens were 'automatically granted status' when you had to apply for it, it wasn't given automatically. So to say I don't trust the government when it comes to Brexit is an understatement. This is my home. I have no plans to leave. I hope nobody will make me and break up my marriage.

Brits get what they deserve. Denmark, Austria, Norway, Switzerland etc. have tighter controls when it comes to "foreigners" and expanded integration programmes, despite being either in the EU, or very closely aligned with it (a "soft" Brexit deal arrangement), yet people don't care and would rather blame the EU for a choice the British government made themselves. Now, they're going to be kicking out culturally more aligned, well educated, EU-citizens and make up for it with "qualified" people from Africa and Asia. That is is literally what the new policy is going to lead to. The numbers have never gone down under the Conservatives, only up. Well, don't say we didn't tell you so... @Ralph Macchiato Unwelcome by who?
The Tories championed Eastern Europe immigration and remain a highly pro immigration party - they had the chance to restrict such immigration like France did and refused to
Labour is also pro-Eastern European immigration.
Even UKIP doesn't want to end Eastern European immigration, they just want to introduce a points system like that used in Canada
Now go and speak to Eastern European immigrants themselves, they almost universally think we are insane for letting in so many immigrants to our country - their own countries are among the most anti-immigrant in Europe
England is already the most densely populated country in Europe and suffers from significant poverty - the fact that mass immigration from poorer countries has put downwards pressure on wages in certain sectors of the eocnomy is an undeniable fact

They know who lives where. The settled status should have just come through the post just like the polling card did. There should be no need to apply and risk getting rejected.
