Dad shoes are comfortable. As you get older you realize a lot of shoes are not comfortable, even if they look good. New Balance has done an amazing job of taking comfortable shoes and letting designers get creative with colors and materials.
@@FakeDriftChrisYep that’s a big reason Yeezy took off as it did. Jordan’s just DON’T feel right because they’re not shaped like feet. Yeezys and New balances are shaped like feet and look good 👍🏾
been wearing dunks a long time but finally pulled the trigger and grabbed some Asics and NBs. and I’m real happy I did. my feet have never been happier.
Kick game so properrrrr ! My Salomon’s have been in daily rotation since I bought them. My 2002r’s have slightly fallen out of my rotation but an amazing sneaker. Infrared 6’s, favorite sneaker of all time man ! Such an amazing conversation ! Great job guys !
57:06 The 2002r were probably one of the first mesh runners shoe that got a huge popularity. But now people are looking into the 1906r, 860v2, and especially the 530 that everyone are hunting to get their hands on. They are all super comfortable as well.
I like this podcast the most. So interesting to think about counter-designs to what fashions are in right now. Adidas Tubular pump from the year 1991 was my favourite technical sneaker when i was 11 years old. Really want Adidas to bring back the OG 1991 version in the different 3 colour ways.
Comfort is key, but I also think people are smarter with their money. How many times we've spent 150-200 on Nike/Jordan to get a pair covered in glue but with new balance I've never had a that problem.
Shout out BIG JLP with the Oregon Trail game recall. Definitely a great game. Looked forward to computer class in 7th grade only because of that game. 😂
Both GT-21xx and 860v2 (and its 767, 768 predecessors) were legit stability running shoes in early 2000's just like the Kayano. They were upper mid level running shoes. They were never trendy or worn for fashion. I was still wearing my 860v2 I bought from 2012 until last year and was surprised when I found them on NB website for sale.
If Welty is ever going to tell a story, nothing will stop that story being told. 😂 no matter how many times he has to start, he WILL get through the full event 😂
TNs & ASICS are to Australian sneaker heads what JORDANS & DUNKS are to American sneaker heads, always have been. Only difference is we’ve been on that for years aswell as Js & Dunks. I have over 60pairs of TNs & 10-15 ASICS on top of Jordan’s & dunks but much prefer TNs/ASICS due to comfortability & CWs
@@hamgil “eshay” means yes, proves your age & ‘knowledge’ of a subculture. Been a searcher & collecting TNs long before that was even a word cuz. Humble yourself.
1:00:42 what’s wrong with Disruptors tho? I’ve been in college for 3 years and they’ve been my daily driver since basically day one. They provide decent comfort and they’re easy to slip on and off even when relatively loosely laced. I have however been considering switching to a pair of 1130s tho
ALD 860s too niche to blowup like the 550s. As long as street wear brands keep coming up with clean cws and design, i can see the mesh runners coming in and out of fashions trends. Kith 1130s go so hard tho 🔥
38:26 I work at New Balance, I have notice that a lot of young adults even early teenagers are even considering buying 608s, 618s, 928s, 847s those training/running shoe that are labeled as Dad shoes. I think a lot of people are starting to choose comfortably and stability even if that means paying a slightly higher price on shoes like New Balance. But 608s are one of New balance selling shoes alongside their Made in USA products just like Welty mentioned.
59:27 Like Welty, Joe, and Brendan mention everyone is becoming more active so therefore everyone wants to buy the most comfortable and performance running shoe they can get. I notice a lot of people are starting to buy more New Balance 1080s, 880s, 860s and More v4s for their daily walking shoes due to its sock like fabric material.
I was working at sports authority/oshmans in high school when the Kayano 14 came out. I was rocking those and the nimbus heavy! And I was far from cross country runner type. The comfort was unmatched. I remember lots of people on the sole collector forums also rocking. Welty you don’t know all. 😅
I’m so glad I copped and acted quickly cos they were selling fast on every size from every website the day of the release . I also swapped to the black laces and they look pretty dope!
I think that the new balance 550 craze came from the rise of dunks and sbs(much of which can be attributed to Travis and panda hype). And as a dunk being your first sneaker head shoe your going to want something more comfortable after that and the 550 was the halfway house so to speak for rocking more comfortable sneakers. A lot of the 550 wearers are onto other NBs or ASICS now. Part of it also is the amount of trend hoppers; they aren’t into kicks so they just hop from whatever was popular to the new thing to stay in the now. My sneakerhead friends and I were rocking Monarchs in an attempt at counter culture back in ‘10-‘14, we even rocked 999s, Gel Lyte 3s, Bodega collabs, and SBs(Shanghai 2s, Tiffs, DeLas, Newcastle). Back then much like now I was always looking for shoes I knew no one else would have on.
Welty Knows his NB I’m Adidas boost comfort fan since 2014 but last year after I tried the NB 2002r made me buy a couple of pairs so comfy and better looking for my age 😅
That’s why I rock NBs and ASICS to separate me from these fashion victims wearing dunks and AJ1s.. like everyone you see wear Jordan 1s and those hideous panda dunks..But I do have some forums and air max 1 on my rotation which I still love..
To me, dad shoes and retro runners are different. Chunky aesthetic shoes like Monarchs, 608s, to Wave Runners, 990s, etc are more dad shoe. Kayano 14s, 860v2, 1906s, Triumph 4s, etc are more retro runners. More of the slimmer mesh based shoes. I don't put them in the same category. Similar but different. I'm here for them.
Do you see certain current performance shoes will be retroed a number of years from now that includes current technology like higher stack or plated shoes?
The waverunner and the triple S are what I think of first when people were first calling thing dad shoes in fashion/pop culture. I know that’s not the true genesis of the term. But I’m 2017, in the context of streetwear/fashion it was wave runner and then lots of chunky copycats. Not NB (on mass appeal scale) until a few years later.
After Yeezy left I feel like New balance took the 2nd place in the sneaker game behind Nike. Nike has a deep catalogue of early 2000’s dad runners too so idk why they don’t release more
Brendan, we’re about the same age but lets be honest about dad shoes. In the early 2000s, hs especially, the kids who wore “dad” shoes were straight up nerds lol. They all wore the super technical cross training sneakers. All the cool kids were wearing air forces, phat farms, shox, retro ajs, and bootleg ajs 😂. Athletes wore whatever was appropriate to their sport or airmaxs. Thanks to our boy Kanye, ofc i ,like everyone else, fell for the hype when the waverunners dropped 😅
Worth mentioning the continued frustration of missing on the SNKRS app resorting to loss of loyalty to their brand and a willingness to go elsewhere for footwear
Welty is not wrong about the Gel Asics in Australia. In primary and secondary school we'd use to wear them lots during P.E. and they were seen as acceptable. I wear them still doing cause they're sturdy.
Welty been killing it lately on the podcast.

Asics too
You nailed it , just turned 29 of the past year I’ve been eyeing running shoes more , I got the NB Vongo 6 and the ASICS cumulus 25
this podcast is so for the culture love tuning in!
Thanks, Joe! The Bear is the best show of 2023! Also, yes I notice everyones shoes nowadays, thanks to you guys.
Welty dropping the knowledge as always 🙌🏾
Absolutely!

Which NBs did you get?
Shouts out to Welty for not being ashamed of his faith but also not pushing it on the viewers, great show.
I need those lol
I love waking up to complex sneaker podcast on Friday mornings
Nothing matches that feeling!
I think the raf simons ozweegos were the first to bring the dad shoe hype to the newer gen and the new era. 2013/2014 ish if I’m not mistaken

Also - new Asics Skateboarding line that just dropped is pretty sick. Would love to hear y'alls take
Welty delivering insight after insight, in the zone!
New balance went from dad shoe. To, i see why my dad wore this shoe.
History repeats, late 90s the sneaker game went through this.. Saucony, Asics, NBs...
i was born in the late '90s didn't see it but you're not the first person i've heard say this

I've leaned into the Dad shoes for years. They've always been dope!
the designers themselves are getting older and want comfort so makes sense they work on things like NB and Asics
We went from Nike basketball to Nmds to element 87/ waffles to dad shoes to dunks to mesh runners. So interesting to see how the culture changes
Since I'm from DC we been wearing dad shoes since the 80's.
