  • Vow Wow, live Newcastle England March 13th 1987, as recorded by me from analogue terrestrial broadcast, onto Scotch L-750 Betamax video tape, mono audio, tape archive number 175. Bow Wow ( Vow Wow) are a Japanese rock band formed in 1975. Originally consisting of guitarist and vocalists Kyoji Yamamoto and Mitsuhiro Saito, bassist Kenji Sano and drummer Toshihiro Niimi, they were one of the first Japanese metal bands. After releasing nine studio albums, Saito left in 1983. The band then adopted a mainstream sound by recruiting lead vocalist Genki Hitomi and keyboardist Rei Atsumi and renamed themselves to Vow Wow

This kind of thing is why I loved growing up in the 80s. I wasn't a metal head at all. I was into REM, the Church, 10,000 Maniacs, stuff like that. But when something like this came up on a show, it was still fun to watch. It was still real music. This is really excellent, give me a break. I've literally never seen or heard of these guys before. Totally made my day.

If memory serves The Tube did a metal themed show and on this show an unknown Japanese band Vow Wow appeared in a video, that one appearance sparked a lot of interest in them it did with me and my mates. Tracking down their albumn was tricky managed to find a copy at Jumbo Recods a specialist shop in Leeds. Got to see Vow Wow when they toured and came to what was Huddersfield polytechnic. Thanks for posting the video \m/

Oh, there are still people in the UK who remember their two years in the UK?
I'm delighted to hear that. They cut a two-year contract with Arista UK in the U.K. and returned to Japan to try to expand into the U.S. However, they could not find a label in the U.S. to sign with, and the next album after "Helter Skelter" was produced by Bob Ezrin, known for Floyd's Wall, etc., but in the end it could only be released in Japan. After that album, the band broke up.
Genki quit music and became a high school teacher. They were labeled as a band that failed in the U.K. and failed to make inroads in the U.S., and the members who continued their musical activities have been treated as if they have been forgotten by the front line since the breakup.
Unfortunately, in Japan today, their much more junior band X Japan is regarded as the top band in Japan, and it is Loudness that has gained worldwide recognition, without VOWWOW's name ever being mentioned.
They formed in Japan in 1975, before the metal genre was separated from the hard rock and heavy rock of the time, before Metallica and Iron Maiden had even appeared on the planet, even though they were already creating professionally.
In that sense, I'm glad there are still people in the UK who remember their active years.
They are going to reunite for one night only in June this year for a memorial concert for Niimi, the drummer who passed away last year.Considering their age, this will probably be the last time the surviving members of the band will get together on stage.

I saw them when they based themselves in the UK. I can only guess they did that in the hope to become big in the UK and use that as a stepping stone to get into the USA where every band dreams of making it big. Pity it didn't work out better for them, I thought they were superb.

    • @ScottishTeeVee
      @ScottishTeeVee  4 месяца назад +4

@@markgreenhow7953 I'm sure your guess is correct. The almost managed to make it, I know many rock fans as friends who all knew of Vow Wow and bought their records, but they just never made it big, at least they gave it a shot and still seem popular in Japan, going by all the comments.

Originally from Osaka, Japan. Think Loudness faced to the similar or eventually same issue, too. They had a great start with “Thunder From East” and they were the opening act for the major bands like AC/DC and Motley Crew.
But, I read some magazine articles that by the time when they released the follow up album and did another tour in the US, they got cold reactions like.. “oh, you are still playing…?” Tough business… well, regardless the countries…
Personally, when Bow Wow became Vow Wow, then, when Lazy became Loudness, these bands were game changers for me.. Good times…!!

Vow Wow - Live at TV Show “The Tube” (1987)
    Newcastle :March 13th 1987
    1.Nightless City (Kyoji Yamamoto)
    2.Hurricane (Kyoji Yamamoto)
    3. Shot In The Dark (Rei Atsumi)
    VOWWOW(1987/3)
    Genki Hitomi Vocal
    Kyoji Yamamoto Guiter
    Rei Atsumi Keyboard
    Kenji Sano Bass
    Toshihiro Niimi Drums
I’m very grateful and appreciative to be able to see this rare footage, which is difficult to obtain, in full in good quality.
VOWWOW was active in the UK for about three years, from 1986/11 to 1989/9.
This video on The Tube was from the early days of VOWWOW in the UK, only 4 months after they came to the UK from Japan in 1986, and before original member Kenji Sano was replaced by Neil Murray.
This was before they signed with Arista UK and made and released their 5th album "V".
So many of the audience in the studio were seeing this band for the first time, and were confused by their performance.
Many people in the U.K. may have learned about VOWWOW for the first time from watching this The Tube TV program.
The band was formed in 1975 and made their professional album debut in 1976,
and was divided into the earlier period of BOWWOW (1975-1983) and the later period of VOWWOW (1984-1990).
The BOWWOW period was a twin-guitar, keyboard-less format, but during the VOWWOW period, two members, Genki Hitomi on specialized vocals and Rei Atsumi on keyboards, joined to form a five-piece band.
(Guitarist Kyoji Yamamoto was the only guitarist).
Until the bass player was replaced by Neil Murray, Kyoji Yamamoto (G), Toshihiro Niimi (D), and Kenji Sano (B) had been steadfast original members since Bow Wow's debut in 1975.
From the "BOWWOW" band, with only one composer, Yamamoto, to the addition of Rei Atsumi, who is from a progressive band and can also compose music, the band had two main composers, Yamamoto and Atsumi, and Genki Hitomi has joined as the main vocalist, changing the sound and impression to the extent that one might think the B and V eras were different bands.
We should not forget that VOWWOW started with a new structure in 1984, but from the BOWWOW era, they released their first album in 1976.
In 1976, the term "metal" and the genre had not yet been established in the world.
They were a band that created something similar to the later metal sound in Japan, in the Far East,
before the NWOBHM movement in the UK, before Iron Maiden(1981) and Metallica (1983)were born in this western music world.

Weirdly enough Japan has always had some cracking rock and metal bands. Amazing guitarists. These days they do a lot of distortion sound guitar and lowfi melancholy electronics at once.
This 1987 sound is indeed not very 'Japanese' lol but I imagine around this time was when the Japs were kind of working out what their brand of guitar music would sound like.
Now there's an amazing scene. My favourite Japanese band is Boris, check them out. Some of the most amazing guitarists in the world imo

🤘oh yes! More Metal, please. You don’t by any chance have all the episodes of ECT from Channel 4 in ‘85 do you? I transferred them from video to DVD a long time ago, chucked oot the original videos and now can’t locate the DVD’s. And it wasn’t a particularly good transfer either.

I have bits and bobs on Betamax, I know a guy who will have the full series in reasonable quality, but he would not give you copies, he would only want to sell you copies

Being the keyboard player in a rock band is considering so uncool, so we can see the guy (who plays so many virtuoso stuff) only in the end of this video...
