I think one's taste is a personal thing..as we mature musically we leave others behind as we move outwards. In the end, we are often so far out that no one is where we are..perhaps a few like Rick rocking along in ecstasy, on the hill in the far distance.
I can feel Rick's enthusiasm but not for this type of tune. I admit that the melody is interesting but for me there are too many notes here, I don't have a specific feeling rather just something like "this is crowded". Obviously it's a matter of taste.
The Köln Concerto and Belonging were my introductions to KJ as a teenager back in the 90's. As a Norwegian, the fact that the rest of the quartet is Scandinavian and that Belonging was recorded in my hometown of Oslo was kinda cool, too.
I like how Rick continues to put out good info that makes you appreciate music even more. He hasn’t devolved or sold out into one of those RUclipsrs that just compares and Epiphone to a Gibson or tells you what new amp that you don’t have is the best in the world. Keep it real, Rick. And thank you.
Man, that was actually pretty solid singing, hitting the right notes and the melody is hard as f... Even more impressive is how much you're in love with music and that happiness just radiates through the screen. It's so fun to watch you turn into a kid like that
This takes me back-I recall singing along to this as well! There’s something about this insane melody that makes you want to sing along with it. Btw I pretty much nailed it now it though I had trouble with the range :) One melody I’ve always had trouble nailing is the synth outro to Steely Dan’s “King of the World.” Rick will appreciate that one.
The thing that made this video extra special to me was, it felt like you were taking us on a familiar ride - the ride so many of us music lovers have had, of discovery and obsession and grasping for understanding and mastery of the music that speaks to us. As others have said, it’s contagious, and it brings me back to a younger age, where things were fresh and new and exciting.
I too never get tired of this song/album. I learned of this album when I was around 20. I am 68 now. A colleague who happened to be Swiss turned me onto Keith Jarrett around the time this album came out. I fell in love with the sound this band had. Watching Rick Beato review and teach all the intricacies of musicians fascinates me. In honor of my friend who introduced me to jazz, I am subscribing to Ricks' channel.
I’ve played guitar for 30 odd years, but every time I hear a great jazz pianist I feel I’ve been on the wrong planet. McCoy Tyler, Monk, etc they’re music is so beautiful. Thanks Rick, for bringing your passion man.

Ah Rick… you are just the greatest. You are the type of father, friend, teacher we all wanted and needed. Don’t EVER stop doing what you do and being the way you are!
I played Spiral Dance and Long as You Know You're Living Yours oh so many decades ago in a local jazz band. I still remember the melody. All the parts of these songs are worth memorizing.
Ok Beato, I'm a 69 year old bassist, prog rock, blues rock ect but I was also Stevie Ray Vaughan's close friend. A few months before his death Stevie put me in charge of finding him a jazz teacher. I had checked out North Texas State University, known for their Stan Kenton library and Lab Bands but before I could solidify anyone, he passed away. I see now how much info is available now. I will end this by saying, I purchased your Beato book and The Tim Pierce Masterclass. I'm really happy this information is now available at our fingertips. Youngsters have no idea how much easier it is to learn now I notice a decline in feel that I attribute to step by step instructions. Anyway, I am now crossing the bridge from blues to jazz because quite frankly it's the last bastion of art in most music nowadays. BTW, I had this conversation on feel in current music with Doyle Bramhall Sr shortly before his demise. Keep up the good work Professor!
I just yesterday stumbled across a Hootie and the Blowfish cover (no, really!) of that song. The bass player missed some things and I went back to Rick’s interview with Robert DeLeo to be sure of it before I commented. Now here I am watching Rick’s video and you mention that song. Time is a circle!
People call me crazy because I like listening to songs I love over and over. I've listened to a single song 10 times in a row... lots of them. I can't get started by Al Hirt 😏
You are not crazy - in my youth, I played Domino Dancing for 4 hrs straight until my grandmother finally said 'Will you PLEASE listen to something else?!'

Yeah if only we could clone him and put him in the music department of every Elementary and High School in The Country. Wish I had Rick as my music teacher when I was young.
Rick is my mate who could never let a track play from start to finish, always lifting the needle to replay a solo or illustrate a production technique.
Another incredible topic to explore ... I mean who other than Rick would have picked THAT piece, off of a 70's ECM disc (few folks even know what that label did for jazz, overall), let alone the Steely Dan connection. Blown away.
And tonight I’ve caught your obsession, Rick… I know this album so well, but have never tried this tune, and now I’m at the piano playing it over and over!! What genius lines… 😊
Rick, You are a gift to this internet world, I have been watching your Chanel for many years. I am usually shy of writing comments but I feel it is about time as you are an inspiration and such a humble honest teacher sharing your music world with us. I love the music of Keith Jarrett and am grateful for your appreciation and analyse of his talented work of art which is beyond this universe.
Can't read nor play any instrument, worst when it comes to singing but it resonates deep in my soul when Rick's explores the different genre s . Lots of of the stuff we grew up, even though we were starved for the good stuff in Apartheid South Africa
I'm glad I'm not the only one who will listen to a song I like over and over and over and over, especially when driving when alone. Just put it on repeat.
I'd never listened to a Taylor Swift album before last year. When Midnights came out I listened to it for the hell of it. Most of it was fine, enjoyable enough. But I must have listened to Maroon a hundred times or more.
Appreciate you turning people on to this great music. This is one of my fav Keith albums, and I remember getting hipped to it after checking out his standards trio albums over 35 years ago. Someone told me you gotta listen to his European quartet too!
Did a 6 month road trip and I think I only listened to 3 songs, the whole way. 😄Good to know others can listen to the same song over and over and over and love it 💓

All fans of great music love Keith - I wish more folks would listen to his Sun Bear Concerts from his November 1976 tour in Japan. Absolute high-wire brilliance. His compositions were brilliant - his improvs were arguably the greatest in the world
Again, a bow down humbly in gratitude to Professor Rick for introducing others to great music options. So much music, so little time to listen, to filter out noise and rubbish. I'm a music fan, not a musician. So this introduction is greatly appreciated 👍 !
Keith is quietly reveling in the moment of knowing Rick (and now countless others, myself included) are riffing along with this infectious and slapping jam. We need more of these!
Hello Rick...a huge fan here. As a drum player for over 60 years, I appreciate your passion, knowledge and insights. Your knowledge and ability to cut-across all genres of music is a breath of fresh air. We are listening from Las Vegas with big ears. You're special and behalf of all your fans, thank you!! OMG, I remember that from my old college days (50 years ago)! I just pulled up the album on Roon and I am rocking the house. Thanks, Rick, for turning this album from a lost memory to living exuberance.
A couple of years after its release, a classmate (named Rick) introduced me to Solo Concerts: Bremen/Lausanne. Totally impressed, I began to explore KJ's discography and came across Spiral Dance a year or so later. I am so glad to "rediscover" this track.
@@paparomeroalpha I know, but I personally can barely tell the difference. For me, streaming digital is the winner because millions of tracks are instantly available. This has breathed new life into my music listening.
I know exactly what you mean Mr Beato, especially where Keith Jarrett is concerned. Ive lost count of the number of times Ive listened to Pt. VII of the Salle Pleyel Paris concert from his 2009 London/Paris live 'Testament' recording. I cant believe such an achingly beautiful composition can be improvised live like that. It stirs me at every hearing for 14 years and counting.
Today Astrud Gilberto passed away. With her song „Girl from Ipanema“ she will stay in our hearts. Btw: pretty strange harmonics, considering when it was created!
Oh no ! Was just listening to her at work last night. Her voice oozed languid summer beach days. Love the album she did w/ Stan Getz as well as her solo stuff.

Rick Beato - aus voller Seele begeistert....das ist so wunderbar und kostbar, ihn schwärmen zu sehen und zu hören und sooo lustig, ihm bei Luftgitarre,Luftschlagzeug,Luftpiano etc..zuzugucken.Herrlich!Einfach herrlich.
This melody is one long, great sentence, full of commas. I have literally been thinking this about Spiral Dance for the longest time, spooky upload for me. It's crazy to me that Ethan Iverson doesn't think much of Keith as a composer. Intricate stuff, but catchy/beautiful always. What an artist.
I commented on Ethan's post when he made that claim, and listed a number of Keith's songs that I thought were great, and I'm sure Spiral Dance was one of them.
Aside from the intricacy, there's a gospel element to Spiral Dance (and other KJ originals, like U-Dance & Rider) that a hack like Iverson would never recognize. These tunes - The Cure, as well - are like a new compositional genre. OTOH, how many Iverson tunes can you name, or sing?
Rick is just having fun like a kid; a very knowledgeable one, but a kid. When we enjoy a thing like a kid would, there is no question: this is our thing. Extraordinary Keith Jarret. I saw him in Chicago, back in 2001, playing with Jack Dejohnette and, not sure if with John Abercrombie or Gary Peacock. Amazing
One of my favorite albums of all time. This is what made me want to learn jazz piano. I too have listened to this particular melody thousands of times. Listening to this as a kid what also blew my mind was how the drums somehow hold down the groove without ever actually repeating a specific pattern. The entire album is basically a drum solo.
Thank you Rick for reminding me that Belonging was the first record that I ever got. It is still my favorit one. I am so happy about your enthusiasm as I share it with you. You can imagine this video is the very best that I saw ever. Seeing you playing this music on the piano inspires me to try the same in my own. Thanks a lot!
IF Vince Guaraldi lived another 30 years, I could totally hear him playing this kind of a melody no sweat. There's something very "Charlie Brown" about this groove!!
First time I bought a studio, the mixer listened to my 2 songs over and over, 4 hours each. He did a good job, and now I listen to my songs over and over and over again. 50 views on my latest video; 46 of those are me.
You’re right Rick, this melody is so beautiful one can’t stop thinking about it - watching your video I was moved by your enthusiasm, you’re a real inspiration to me!
Stevie Ray Vaughan's guitar riffs on David Bowie's Modern Love has had me in a bind for a few days now. And also because Kenny Loggins allegedly took the drum apart, slightly modified it; and turned it into Footloose. Help me!!😭
You have my sympathies 😂 !!!! Yeah.. NOTHING can surpass a true passion !!! Never mind your tears , I go loopy🤪😆! Greetings from N.Ireland 🎶 !!! THIS tune , reminds me a little of the theme tune to ‘Cagney & Lacey ‘ !!!! 😂🤣😂
Thats a very good tune if you can obsess over it without growing tired of it. Normally, I can obsess over a tune for about 3 -4 days IF i get to replay it often before its 'all played out' for me.
I discovered Belonging about 25 years ago, it's just amazing music. Along with The Koln Concert, I think it's Jarrett's best stuff. I've listened to both albums many many times; makes life worth living.
Your love and appreciation for music is amazing. You grasp so much and sharing it with others is awesome. All types of music for everyone's enjoyment. So happy that we are fortunate over time to listen to so many great artists and bands. Long live music!!!
Even before he referenced the B Dorian vamp, I just appreciated Rick air drumming the parts WHILE he was singing the melody line! He can’t help himself, which, as a drummer myself, I understand and respect.
I have these moments all the time. I listen to anything and when I like it, I obsessively play it over and over. I was checking out a jazz tune called Fuller Love by Art Blakey. I had it going 24/7 until I transcribed it. Love your work Rick!
Keith creates such lovely melodies - Mirrors from Arbour Zena has some amazing sequences (among others). Grow Your Own from his 1971 album with Gary Burton is another "hit". And the Koln Concert (especially the opening section) - breathtaking!
I sometimes can't get Kylie Minogue's Can't Get You Out of My Head out of my head once I hear it. There's something addictive about that tune. It plays like a loop over and over again.
YES! I get this with most songs from 2000/2001, lots of hiphop songs from those years also have incredibly well produced tunes, think about the intro of “Ja Rule - Put It On Me”, just viibe that intro, ja rule just starts rapping too darn early! 😂 but also the refrain with backup vocals of “where my girls at” by 702. I guess I also like songs that have some mantric element to them, that’s why in my opinion the best Beatles’ song is ‘Words of Love’. However the songs that really stick with me because they reach the depth of my feelings are melancholic songs like “All Good Things Come to an End” by Nelly Furtado, especially those what I call ‘blowing sand sounds’.
Incredibly amazing since '73 upon 1st hearing this outstanding creative, complexity of the album. Fantastic newer generations can appreciate & marvel from artistry as his.
Dude, that is so outrageously amazin’! Those lifts and falls from just the harmonic element alone are brilliant! The tension and the groove of the vamp is so hypnotic and then kicks into a melodic roller coaster!!
I can listen to the melodic lines from Dixie Dregs' 'What If' album over and over, the guitar, violin, keys, and even bass melodies are exquisite to me. THANK YOU Rick for sharing this Keith Jarrett with us, I'd have never known it otherwise ))
There's Talent on the Radio? I mean I turned off the radio at the end of The 80's. Its all canned processed crap. Then there is The Auto-Tune girls.......The Bane of Western Civilization. Yes Rick is definitely a better singer, artist and producer Than the endless sea of noise on radio, TV and a good deal of The internet. I would add that from what I have seen and heard he is a hell of Good guy.
@@barakbalestrery4138 this is ok. But the first comment here: “Rick has more singing talent than 99% of singers I hear on radio”… please, let’s stay true.
This sort of video can help jazz become slightly more popular. Rick has a massive audience and loves to share his enthusiasm. He repeats parts of the song that pop fans probably just wouldn't like, but with the breakdown and explanation become more palatable. When jazz fans ask how to get more people listening to their music, this is the answer.
I would never appreciate that melody on my own, but Rick's enthusiasm is so contagious : )

A bit too complex of a melody for must of us… or at least for me.

Rick, you know, we need more Jarett on your channel. His works are endless in all music aspects...
I'm right there with you.
Have you ever listened to Chick Corea's Akoustic Band album (the studio album, not the live album)?
If not: do it.
I immediately thought of Christmas Is Coming by Vince Guaraldi when I heard the Bb vamp!
exactly!
Yes!
I’m hearing “Cast your fate to the wind” in this. Both artists are amazing
@@bassslice8916 Absolutely! There truly is nothing new under the sun!
Absolutely brilliant!! Your enthusiasm is so contagious Rick! ❤
First time I bought a studio, the mixer listened to my 2 songs over and over, 4 hours each. He did a good job, and now I listen to my songs over and over and over again. 50 views on my latest video; 46 of those are me.
Homie you don’t have any videos I was gonna be 51 😂
😂❤🇷🇴
Couldn't find it either. Put it up, always interested to hear what others are doing !
Your passion for music is contagious, Rick. Love the channel. I've been talking to my kids about it. Hopefully they follow.
So happy to be introduced to this amazing-sounding, strange jazz tune. Spiral Dance by Keith Jarrett
also "Mountain Dance"
You have my sympathies 😂 !!!! Yeah.. NOTHING can surpass a true passion !!!

Greetings from N.Ireland 🎶 !!!
damn! now i've had to go and listen to texas flood.
@@patm5086 Right, and the Dora the Explorer theme was lifted from the b section of Led Zeppelins Fool in the rain😂
@@patm5086 Bit of confusion there I see, I wasn't refuting your song knowledge but rather "nerding out" with you .😊
You're my hero, Rick!! Haha Keep doin what you do!!! Love it!!
I've never been able to get this tune out of my head. played it in a jazz band in college and never get tired of it.
Thats a very good tune if you can obsess over it without growing tired of it. Normally, I can obsess over a tune for about 3 -4 days IF i get to replay it often before its 'all played out' for me.
Someone should do a video compiling all of Rick’s “woooo” segments!
I discovered Belonging about 25 years ago, it's just amazing music. Along with The Koln Concert, I think it's Jarrett's best stuff. I've listened to both albums many many times; makes life worth living.
Indeeddddddd
This is fantastic, I understand your excitement with this one. Incredible writing.
hitch a ride solo is forever stuck in my head. it doesn’t leave.
Uno de mis discos favoritos de Jarrett/Garbarek... Gracias por este analisis melódico.
Keith creates such lovely melodies - Mirrors from Arbour Zena has some amazing sequences (among others). Grow Your Own from his 1971 album with Gary Burton is another "hit". And the Koln Concert (especially the opening section) - breathtaking!
Exactly my kind of obsessive behavior! You can just see how thoroughly he's enjoying the piece. Absolutely loved the video!
For a week I couldn't get Heaven's Ladder from Beck out of my head. I thought I was going crazy.
Rick is the only person I know who plays air instruments and I really enjoy it, and he sings such a complicated piece and nails it! Unbelievable.
It is brilliant. The whole album is. Been listening to it since... 1974!
Funny enough, I was about to say I hear some Keith Jarret in it. Bingo, it is Keith. Love this pianiste and his impros.
i loooove this cd! its the first jazz cd i heard and still one of my favourites!. i can sing the melody
Love this guy! This was great. Learned so much. Beato is the high school music teacher we all wish now we had had back then. Thank you.
And the whole Keith's solo on Too Young To Go Steady is pure jenius ❤❤❤❤❤
Rick you made a vid about my FAVORITE Keith tune! If I have a student that i think can handle it i show them the melody. Works like a charm!
I sometimes can't get Kylie Minogue's Can't Get You Out of My Head out of my head once I hear it. There's something addictive about that tune. It plays like a loop over and over again.
I think it's the ostinato accompaniment under the singing.
true! I also thought Rick might be talking about Gigi D'Agostino - L' Amour Toujours xd
Especially that part where some electric cat is meowing.
That song always puts me in a great mood.
Incredibly amazing since '73 upon 1st hearing this outstanding creative, complexity of the album. Fantastic newer generations can appreciate & marvel from artistry as his.
Rick, run a mini contest. Have viewers record themselves doing the same sing-along as you did, and throw it together as a montage. :)
Dixie Dregs' 'What If' --thanx for this ref
A fellow Dixie Dregs fan "What If" What a GREAT album 👍 ......
The most incredible gateway to the music of Keith Jarrett's music so far to me. Congrat Rick : a new subscriber !
Rick, you’re a BEAST! Loved your singalong!
This is what keith jarrett's music does to you. It affects you and then you have to find out why. Thank you rick for your passion.
Good job, I say you nailed that one!🤘☺🎶 Cheers from Stockholm🇸🇪
Rick has more singing talent than 99% of singers I hear on radio today.
Come on man… what radios are you listening to?? No autotune? 😂😂
@@Rabid-Polyphia-Fan so amy winehouse… beyoncè… eddie vedder… bruno mars… celeste… adele… are bad singers? They are on radio…
It's not that they are all bad singers. It is mostly because music is dumbed down that makes these singers seem less talented then they really are.
Man, I cannot get that melody INTO my head, so many changes
