The more sticks piled up on that nest the more weight. The winter that hit Big Bear Valley, was pretty intense. The wind gusts over 90 miles an hour. Since then a few months back I have seen different storms hit various parts of the nation and the nests of other Raptors have come crashing down. The tree it sat in looked sturdy but reality it was not. I fear that in 2025 winter will be even more furious than the winter of 2024. I hope the nest or its inhabitants don't wind up at the bottom of the gorge. A 2,000 lb nest is alot, but a 3,000 lb nest is way to heavy. Lets hope, the tree, nest, eggs and parents survive.
The tree has sustained wind gusts in excess of 80 mph. Jeffrey Pines have a unique structure and even with 10 feet of snow on the limbs, they just "give" and bend without breaking. The tree is inspected by an arborist each year prior to the camera maintenance and has been deemed healthy. The sticks brought to the nest are comprised of wood from several different type trees, some being more lightweight as you can see by the eagles flying in with huge limbs several hundred feet up the mountain and up to the nest 145 ft. Also, it has less grassy materials that hold water weight than most other nests you see I believe the nest will be fine for many years to come.
It's very difficult to predict weather - even meteorologists fail at this! Instead of doom & gloom manifest something positive for the royal couple as the past two years their eggs didn't hatch after everything they went through.
Keep adding sticks moving sticks trying to get it put together their workmanship together will strengthen it get it ready for the eggs and the weather these 2 together are forever love and strength and will defend their territory 🦅♥️
I would love getting access to that nest and arranging those sticks! Then I'd sit back and see what they would do with it. Thanks for letting us watch!
I love watching then fixing their nest.although they dont always agree on where the sticks should go.They are like an old married couple.I hope they are blessed with.multipule chicks next time.

Honestly, I think Shadow and Jackie are just making that original huge nest a collection of sticks for themselves.They can come back and choose sticks as they please for the new nest that they're building... kind of like shopping when everything's right in front of you and you don't have to search for anything. One huge shopping bin of sticks at their disposal if you will 😊
On the contrary, the sticks are stored at the Stick Depot Snag and often brought to the nest from there. I think it is doubtful J&S will choose another tree as their main nest. Eagles are compulsive nest builders though, and some are known to have many nests. This tree offers everything an eagle desires as their nest tree, being close to their food source with exceptional views of their territory, and accessibility into the nest without obstacles.

They ain’t no dummies! They know “ somebody has been messing around in our house”! Shadow is watching things like a hawk ! Lol. You would think these guys would get tired being on their feet & legs so much! I’ve never seen them actually lay, except when they took turns sitting on their eggs last winter. Is that the normal?
