I think I remember during an interview they said that they adopted this name because of their fusion (they can create the fusion because they were from a colony, hence the anglo-Indian mix) and cousins because they see their music as kind of from the same family, but not exactly the same parents. Leslie Lewis was one of the biggest producers/composers of the 90s independent music in India and got fame to a lot of artists we love outside of movies. His sound was very new for the 90s, which was inspired by Western pop with an Indian essence. They are basically singing to God and asking the divine to manisfest again on Earth to set the world right. It does not matter what name this Avataar takes as long as the world is saved. Bottomline: We all worship the Divine with different names and conceptions but ultimately it is the same divine force that looks after this world.

Rahman and often the highlight of his live shows. The other dude singing in English is Leslie Lewis who prior to this Colonial Cousins project was well known in music production, composing for commercials and recording. This came out early just as India started doing 24-hour music channels serving Indian music (previously MTV and others had a single 'Asia' feed based out of Hong Kong where Indian content would have a few hours allocated each day and the rest was a mix of music from all across the world). So it was a time of quite a bit of experimenting. Desipop had its distinctive sound, Daler brought Punjabi music into non-Punjabi speaking mainstream, Bally Sagoo (UK-based Indian artist) was doing these amazing remixes of classic songs, and Colonial Cousins tried this thing with a mix of English and Hindi lyrics in the same song (which mirrors how many urban Indians converse). They called it fusion-pop then. Colonial here (likely) describes a connection to a minority group in India (Anglo-Indians) that are descendants of the British, usually speak English as their first language, but often don't have any representation (other than occasionally cast in movies as Independence-era British villains). Here, it's supposed to be a good thing - like, a musical connection to Western art and instruments. Leslie Lewis isn't Anglo-Indian himself but I think he had enough influences to want to create something Indian for English-speaking Indians. This is probably not the best song to introduce them - they also did more uptempo and 'pop' songs like Kaizala and Sa Ni Dha Pa (the breakout song).

I read the comments about the nostalgia of cassettes. I was about 5 - 6 years old when the cassette culture started declining and it was all about the CDs. I remember asking dad not to go for this Ford ecosport only because it lacked the dvd drive 😂. And now CDs are long gone. Even my laptop got no dvd drives. We can browse and stream anything for free online. Time flies!

I think the name comes from the singing styles and not the languages used. I don't recollect too many Hindi lyrics in their songs. Other than the last refrain of "Govind Bolo", zero Hindi in this song. The chorus starts off with Kannada.

I think the name comes from the fact that all basis of music at some point is from same family. Carnatic classical music and jazz both were birthed at different times and different places yet can be fused seamlessly to create a beautiful song. So these music genres are like cousins. Also, at one point both india and america was colonized by Britishers. So maybe that also plays a part in taking Indian classical music to distant lands n influence other music.

So it was a time of quite a bit of experimenting. Desipop had its distinctive sound, Daler brought Punjabi music into non-Punjabi speaking mainstream, Bally Sagoo (UK-based Indian artist) was doing these amazing remixes of classic songs, and Colonial Cousins tried this thing with a mix of English and Hindi lyrics in the same song (which mirrors how many urban Indians converse). They called it fusion-pop then. Colonial here (likely) describes a connection to a minority group in India (Anglo-Indians) that are descendants of the British, usually speak English as their first language, but often don't have any representation (other than occasionally cast in movies as Independence-era British villains). Here, it's supposed to be a good thing - like, a musical connection to Western art and instruments.
Leslie Lewis isn't Anglo-Indian himself but I think he had enough influences to want to create something Indian for English-speaking Indians.
This is probably not the best song to introduce them - they also did more uptempo and 'pop' songs like Kaizala and Sa Ni Dha Pa (the breakout song).

I read the comments about the nostalgia of cassettes. I was about 5 - 6 years old when the cassette culture started declining and it was all about the CDs. I remember asking dad not to go for this Ford ecosport only because it lacked the dvd drive 😂. And now CDs are long gone. Even my laptop got no dvd drives. We can browse and stream anything for free online. Time flies!

I think the name comes from the singing styles and not the languages used. I don't recollect too many Hindi lyrics in their songs. Other than the last refrain of "Govind Bolo", zero Hindi in this song. The chorus starts off with Kannada.
@@EagleOverTheSea And leslie lewis is from Mangalore and Kannada ironically is Leslie's state language in Karnataka. I am sure his mother tongue is Konkani though. And hariharan is a tamilian but sang in Kannada.
@@edwardspencer9397 Did Leslie grow up there? Kannada is mostly an administrative language and medium of instruction in Mangalore. The lingua franca is Tulu.
I think the name comes from the fact that all basis of music at some point is from same family. Carnatic classical music and jazz both were birthed at different times and different places yet can be fused seamlessly to create a beautiful song. So these music genres are like cousins. Also, at one point both india and america was colonized by Britishers. So maybe that also plays a part in taking Indian classical music to distant lands n influence other music.
Most Indi pop songs of the 90s will surprise you the way this video did.

Both Hari and Lessli come from South India - Tamil speaking households. Lessli is from French colonial ( past) Pondicherry. Both r settled in Mumbai. Lessli composes music for Tamil movies.
