Leslie Lewis and Hariharan are the colonial cousins. They were formed in the mid-90s as a fusion pop/rock band with Indian classical and Western Jazz/Pop. Leslie was already a renowned guitarist and songwriter(more in background like western labels songwriter who write for big stars). Hariharan was already a renowned classical/ghazal singer.. you have reacted to many of his songs and live show 😁(he sang iconic songs in both Roja and Bombay and many many more!). They were one of the first doing this in India - 2 young men coming together in a “band”. Indian pop music/independent music took off in early 90’s. Colonial Cousins, Indus Creed, Alisha Chinai, Lucky Ali and Silk Route were some of the first to burst into the limelight. Don’t know why they call themselves colonial cousins. your guess is as good as mine, but you can rule out any Alabama connections…

The name colonial cousins come not from the singers but from the music. A mix of western pop and Indian classical music. And when Krishna (this song) was released it was the first of it's kind fusion music and broke all records. It is also the first Indian song to be featured in MTV unplugged.
The Carnatic Music part is based on the song 'Krishna Nee Begane Baro', a Kannada song in Raga Yamunakalyani.
“Krisna nee begane Baroo” was composed around 1485 AD. It translates into “come fast, Krishna”

I think I remember during an interview they said that they adopted this name because of their fusion (they can create the fusion because they were from a colony, hence the anglo-Indian mix) and cousins because they see their music as kind of from the same family, but not exactly the same parents. Both words hint at a fusion a mix, the bridge between two ideas.
Leslie Lewis was one of the biggest producers/composers of the 90s independent music in India and got fame to a lot of artists we love outside of movies. His sound was very new for the 90s, which was inspired by Western pop with an Indian essence.
Hariharan is a well established singer, who has sung many songs in many languages for many people (including AR Rahman), is a successful Ghazal singer as well. The best thing about a Hariharan performance: no song ever sounds the same again, because he is so spontaneous with improvising!

The Krishna part is from a great Kannada poem composed sometime in the 14th/15th centuries by Vyasaraya.
It was a massive hit in India, back then, in 1996. BTW, both are Indians.

Definitely react to 'Sa Ni Dha Pa' by the Colonial Cousins :-) This was a band that the millennial Indian generation grew up listening to along with Euphoria, Lucky Ali, Silk Route, to name a few. You should also react to Euphoria songs - Dhoom Pichak Dhoom, Maeri, Kaise Bhoolegi Mera Naam (Featuring Vidya Balan when she had just started her career).

Hariharan is an established Indian singer...you have listened to him in Bombay movie song Tu hi re/Oyire in Hindi/Tamil respectively...Leslie Lewis is a prominent music composer from 90's....I still listen to audio album Colonial Cousin...please react to more songs from them....Sorry, my recommendation are Sa Ni Dha Pa and Indian Rain from the same album....

Leslie Lewis and Harihan both are ftom Tamil tradition, although Hariharan was born in Trivandrum,Kerala, Leslie was from Puducheri and should have converted to Christianity somewhere up the family tree during colonial era. That could be behind the name Colonial Cousins.
The beautiful song "Krishna nii begane baro"( meaning "Krishna come back soon") is about Lord Krishna, and is sung by Hariharan. It is an old composition in the Kannada language popularized by many top carnatic classical musicians and is in the raaga yaman Kalyan. I think the main message of this medley of Indian and western music is this: " oh lord krisha, Jesus, come back soon and save the world". But I am not sure. I could not get the lyrics of the English version clearly. The Kannada song is beautifully reinterpreted to convey the above message, if i have understood it correctly.
They are basically singing to God and asking the divine to manisfest again on Earth to set the world right. It does not matter what name this Avataar takes as long as the world is saved.
Bottomline: We all worship the Divine with different names and conceptions but ultimately it is the same divine force that looks after this world.
Saying hariharan is a really good singer is an understatement. The man is a musical genius. A magician.

I love the video not just for the song, but also the acting in the video ! The parents (Neena Kulkarni and Sanat Vyas I think), the boy actor, did such a convincing job of portraying the story . Thats rare for a musical video.
It was a pop ballad from the 90s- they’re both Indians, one a Hindu (Hariharan) and the other a Christian (Leslie Lewis), effectively “cousins” since they’re both Indians, but “Colonial” because Christianity was mostly brought here by the Brits trying to “civilize” the “heathens” (I say this with a fair amount of controlled anger against the British Empire’s injustices against India and Indians). The song’s refrain “Krishna Nee Begané Baro” (literally: Krishna please show up quickly) is a Telugu religious / South Indian Classical Music/ Carnatic Music song from the 15th or 16th century, which they’ve adapted with English lyrics, calling for peace and harmony among people of different faiths. Hopefully this explains the references.

Ya, this was certainly 90s...as a kid, this was sort of my first introduction to a fusion which has enriched my life ever since...You have listened many times to Hari Ji in various reactions before( 'Uyire' from Bombay might be the easiest recall I guess)who is the singer that sings 'Krishna nee'...This album was a chartbuster then and I hadn't listened it for a long time now but the message hasn't changed a bit after 25 years which I guess should put us to shame as human beings more than say the lyrics are still relevant...

"Colonial cousins" is the name of the duo "Hariharan and Leslie Lewis". And the reason behind this name is the fusion of Indian Music and Western Music (Indian and English). English is a result of British colonialism in India and hence the name "Colonial Cousins" :)

I read the comments about the nostalgia of cassettes. I was about 5 - 6 years old when the cassette culture started declining and it was all about the CDs. I remember asking dad not to go for this Ford ecosport only because it lacked the dvd drive 😂. And now CDs are long gone. Even my laptop got no dvd drives. We can browse and stream anything for free online. Time flies!

Hariharan (or Indian Neil Degrassi Tyson as people like to comment on his videos now lol) is an industry heavyweight, was a frequent collaborator with A.R. Rahman and often the highlight of his live shows. The other dude singing in English is Leslie Lewis who prior to this Colonial Cousins project was well known in music production, composing for commercials and recording. This came out early just as India started doing 24-hour music channels serving Indian music (previously MTV and others had a single 'Asia' feed based out of Hong Kong where Indian content would have a few hours allocated each day and the rest was a mix of music from all across the world).
So it was a time of quite a bit of experimenting. Desipop had its distinctive sound, Daler brought Punjabi music into non-Punjabi speaking mainstream, Bally Sagoo (UK-based Indian artist) was doing these amazing remixes of classic songs, and Colonial Cousins tried this thing with a mix of English and Hindi lyrics in the same song (which mirrors how many urban Indians converse). They called it fusion-pop then. Colonial here (likely) describes a connection to a minority group in India (Anglo-Indians) that are descendants of the British, usually speak English as their first language, but often don't have any representation (other than occasionally cast in movies as Independence-era British villains). Here, it's supposed to be a good thing - like, a musical connection to Western art and instruments.
Leslie Lewis isn't Anglo-Indian himself but I think he had enough influences to want to create something Indian for English-speaking Indians.
This is probably not the best song to introduce them - they also did more uptempo and 'pop' songs like Kaizala and Sa Ni Dha Pa (the breakout song).

Colonial Cousins is because Leslie Lewis sings in English and Hariharan sings in Hindi.English is introduced to India because India was a British colony.English and Hindi are cousins in India😋
I think the name comes from the singing styles and not the languages used. I don't recollect too many Hindi lyrics in their songs. Other than the last refrain of "Govind Bolo", zero Hindi in this song. The chorus starts off with Kannada.
@@EagleOverTheSea And leslie lewis is from Mangalore and Kannada ironically is Leslie's state language in Karnataka. I am sure his mother tongue is Konkani though. And hariharan is a tamilian but sang in Kannada.
