    Dell T420, R330, M620, T640... what do all the letters and numbers mean?
    In this video we'll be breaking down all of the specifics with how Dell names their PowerEdge servers. We'll be discussing the form factors and sizes, processors used, ECC RAM types, power consumption, heat, airflow, hard drive capacities, ect.

    I just took the dive into homelab as well. I picked up a R710 with dual 6 core 6 thread processors for a total of 24 logical cores. 192gb ram. And purchased a unRAID license. I may look around for a tower version of the 710 since I really don't have the space for a rack. However I do have it hanging on the wall in my office closet thanks to an amazon purchase. YT subscriber 99. FB follower #1 according to the about me page. I look forward to learning more from you and the rest of the community.

      Good to see you as part of the scene! Just the other day I saw someone that had an R720 in their closet mounted on the wall. As long as the intake is pointed down, it works, right? Check out the FB group 'IT Equipment Buy/Sell Servers/Switches And anything IT related'. There's occasionally T series PowerEdge systems popping up. There's actually a T630 on Marketplace right now for $700 located in Lawrenceville, GA. A bit pricey, though. The R710's are still good machines. On yours you'll mostly likely run out of cores before you come cloe to running out of RAM. Lay down a copy of ESXi 6.7 and get a free license and you're ready to rock.

      @@Warning56kb Yep and I even took the time to ensure there was plenty of room for the heat to exhaust. Previously I had it laying on a shelf this way it seems quieter. Ive got 2 noctua fans coming in today for my old Cisco switch to bring the noise level down. My next cleanup venture will be to get a small wall mounted rack big enough for the Unifi Dream Machine Pro SE and the switch. with room for some keystone plates to get my cables nicely organized. Plus I'll move my ISP router/ont in the closet. I grabbed another fiber jumper here at work to extend it over to the closet.

    Great video! Interested in your upcoming fan speed video. I have an R740 with up-to-date iDRAC and an R750, also up-to-date. The fan speed is not controllable via Dell's IPMI Tool on either. The Tool reports insufficient privilege held to make the change. I understand that the R730 is settable up to a specific iDRAC version and not past that version. I have been working with Dell for the past month to have them do something about the noise coming, particularly, from the R750. I have gone as far as to replace the very high performance ("gold") fans it came with with standard performance fans. Now the machine is livable, but not optimal. The fans never spin down to below about 33%. I'd like them at probably about 25%. I do have a Mellanox NIC in the machine, but it makes no difference when it's removed. By the way, that machine uses about 380 watts doing nothing. No load. (I had a T620 that ran with 30 VMs at 185 watts.) Hey, keep up the great work. Looking forward to more from your channel. All my best!

Just this week, I ended up getting a Dell PowerEdge T410 with a single 6 core CPU and 32Gb RAM for A$50 (Around $34 US) and a Dell PowerEdge R620 with 2 CPUs and 88Gb RAM for A$160 (Around $105 US).

    Great video. This made me happier with the Precision Workstations and Optiplexes in my home lab from a noise/heat/power standpoint. They don't have hot swap drives or power supplies (unless you add 3rd party sata bays and controllers), but they're great for my needs and I don't mind downtime if I ever do need to replace a power supply or drive. And for additional data durability - zfs replication between machines, proxmox backup server, etc.
    A proper set of hot swap drives on the front of the chassis would be nice though.

    hp is better than dell for many reason - less proprietary parts and better more simple designs - run from dell to hp for a better experience when it comes to older pc and servers

    • @Warning56kb
      @Warning56kb  10 месяцев назад +2

      It greatly depends on specific user needs and capabilities, but when it comes to firmware and BIOS availability Dell wins by a longshot. HPE requires an enterprise license ($$$$) for anything other than critical updates. Dell provides all for both home and enterprise users for free.

    • @Warning56kb
      @Warning56kb  10 месяцев назад

      I personally have many non-proprietary parts and modifications to my PowerEdge and HPE servers, so for the vast majority of uses it's a non-issue. HPE also uses many proprietary parts as Dell does such as power connectors, so HPE has its limitations in areas as well. Again, it all depends on user needs.

    • @Warning56kb
      @Warning56kb  7 месяцев назад +1

      Honestly I would look into selling it and getting at least an R720 if you're wanting to stay with something that size. You could easily get an R720 now for what you could sell the R715 for plus have much better compatibility with a wider array of software. The internal RAID card being a possible hangup on it. BIOS management and iDrac is also much better on the 12th gen servers.

    • @Warning56kb
      @Warning56kb  Год назад +1

      That is quite a bit high. The fans in the R320 are smaller than their R720 counterparts at 40mm vs 60mm, so that will be a bit less airflow. I'd up the fan speed a bit closer to say 25-30%. Did you happen to repaste the CPU when you got it? That may be contributing some.
