I remember reading a comment elswhere from an American woman who had spent time in Scotland. Her advice to travellers was "Definitely go out and play with the Scots. You'll have the time of your life but under no circumstances should you f*ck them about." The comment was followed by hundreds of others saying "agree 100%" and as a Scot I thought fair comment & I'll take that.
For good people we'll generally be very open, friendly & go out of our way to help. If you're arrogant, selfish, entitled etc there's a chance you may be invited to reflect upon your own short comings and consider how you might better interact with people in the future (someone might "rip you a new one") which seems fair to me ... whatever you give you'll get back & more.

His main bad experience happened chatting up a couple of young women, don't remember if that was in the street or in a bar, actually I don't care. The fact is, ordinary Scots are renowned for their friendliness and hospitality but JPS wrote us all off because of one incident. Nuff said.

as I understandit, jps (and his brother) stopped a couple of attractive lassies on the street while visiting Edinburgh and tried to chat them up (hit on them). The girls weren't interested and told him in no uncertain terms to f**k off! Lost count the number of times women have said something similar to me ☹. But whereas I interpreted their reaction as a sign they weren't enamoured of my appearance or impressed by my scintilating conversation, he (to satisfy his own ego) rather than accept the girls just weren't attracted to him, concluded that Scots were unfriendly. I'm scottish and can confirm we are really really friendly! Scotland is one of the few places were you can go out by yourself and by the end of the night you've got friends for life.
As for JPS, sadly you do get one or two miserable people no matter where you go, so may have just been unlucky.
As for the shopping, UK wide most shops opening hours are 9 to 6pm. Supermarkets are open till 10. As we call them, corner shops or mini express supermarkets like the Spar are open till 11pm.
As for the pubs, not all pubs are like that, if the pub sells food children can stay till 9.30,to finish food. Also, if accompanied by adults, legally, children can stay in pubs till midnight no later. Most pubs will have designated family areas. It really depends on the pub. There are actually very few pubs now that don't allow kids after a set time, especially the further north you go, as they depend on the footfall.
Also haggis is brilliant especially with a bit of grated cheese on top.

And now we're all paying dearly.
It's not just an economic decimation the English people have caused (and the Welsh ... now crying about no farming subsidies that they caused to themselves) - it's the fact that they would deny our genuine friendships across Europe with people who once looked up to us, and who we could once visit and trade with in a matter of a few hours.
It was a firm betrayal by the English - based on pure racism and exceptionalism and sheer greed.
This IS relevant for me to say: because somebody needs to say it - so that nice people all over Europe know, for a fact, that the Scottish aren't wankers - and never were.
It's the English - yet to mend their mindless ways.
Because, there IS a difference between Scotland and England ... one is nice, the other is nasty .. respectively; I hope I'm helping EU citizens to recognise the difference - as it is oft described as "the UK" who turned its back on Europe. A sweeping generalisation that ignores the way the Scottish people voted as opposed to the clueless English who voted, not just to impose economic sanctions on themselves, but betray their European friends.

Things are closed at 6pm in a lot of places because we have lives to enjoy!
Pubs are for adults, lots of places that do food will have a bar and a lounge, the bar is adults only and the lounge for families but not after 8pm usually. Anywhere that sells alcohol has to have a license and the terms of the license will state when alcohol can be sold and if children can be admitted, if children are allowed it states where specifically in the building so if you let a child in the bar part when your license states they can only be in the lounge you will lose your license/be fined/be convicted.
Kilts are expensive but that’s because they are handcrafted pieces of art.

    LMAO
That's a bad thing to say to anyone in the UK with a strong accent, doubly if you are from the US, that would rub some people up the wrong way
I am English, but played a bunch of shows up in Scotland as part of a tour (2001 Capdown Pound for the Sound tour , 5 Knuckle , support band). We played Glasgow, Edinburgh, Aberdeen and Dundee as well as about 25 shows across England.
All the Scottish shows were amazing the People were great, the Glasgow show was the best of the entire tour, crowd were insane, also I thought Scotland was beautiful
Especially the road that links Edinburgh , Dundee and Aberdeen. We drove up there at one point and it was just stunning scenery
Beautiful places , Good fun and warm people(if a little feisty but I don't mind that) loved it up there, would highly recommend anyone going, from the UK or US .

Midges are like VERY small mosquitoes. They bite just the same and leave an irritating little itchy bite behind. Some people are more tasty to them than others and some people react to them worse than others, but because they are so small and in such quantity they can literally make your life hell. I can remember many instances from my childhood in the Highlands of the whole family literally running for cover because the midges were out in such force. They love still damp weather. A good windy day usually sees them off for a while.

Hey, It’s JPS visited one city (Edinburgh), walked up to a group of teenage girls and asked if they were from the area whilst filming them and was told to f#%k off. He then visited a nightclub and some people tried to engage him in political conversation, whilst some others claimed that they couldn’t stand ‘Americans’, JPS then claimed that these interactions with people in their teens and twenties in one city was representative of an entire country. Seeing as how both Edinburgh and Glasgow were listed in the top five (I believe) cities to visit in the world…Edinburgh coming out first, I can’t help but feel that JPS has to be held at least partially responsible for his experience.
I’d also just like to point out that Scottish money is British money, I think that they guy from Wolter’s World meant to say English. Paper money in the U.K. is issued by The Bank of England, The Bank of Scotland, The Royal Bank of Scotland and The Clydesdale Bank (also Scottish). Only the coins are not connected to a specific bank.
Oh and I would imagine that if someone is sending you haggis from Scotland, it’ll be in a can.

This proved to be correct.

    - you can get around by bus, train, tram, local flight. And feet if so inclined
    - if you want to try a kilt, hire one (very good clothing - me and my nephews walked through Oakland, CA, in kilts, to my daughter's wedding, to general delight). The tartan is irrelevant. Hire the one you like.
    - Go to see the statue of the Duke of Wellington in Glasgow. He has a traffic cone on his head. The Authorities tried to take it off; the Weegies put is back. So it is more or less permanent now. That gets you an idea of what Scots are like.

As an American visiting Scotland, it was really helpful to make sure I had access to a good GPS. Also make sure you learn what all of their signs are for driving because a lot of their street signs were quite different than what we expected. Instead of posting the speed limit, they would have symbols at represented the different speed limit numbers. They also have cameras almost everywhere so be careful of that when you’re driving to make sure you stick to the speed limit. The ticket we got was from parking in a hotel parking lot next to the Edinburgh airport. Trying to save money on the airport. Parking fees was a massive mistake. That ticket was indeed mailed to us and a complete surprise that we weren’t expecting. The roads are also very skinny and tour buses didn’t even try to stay on their side of the road so it was terrifying at many points as we drove from the East Coast all the way to the West Coast. Totally worth it though so that we could go explore everything in between. You can randomly stop and look at castles, ruins, random shops, or farms, or just beautiful scenery. We got cash when we flew in but rarely used it. Credit cards were accepted almost everywhere. Random thing we noticed was that every person knew how to back into their parking space like a pro.

As I said under JPS;'s video there is a general curiosity when it comes to Americans, and I do think it comes from a good place. When JPS was complaining about being asked about his politics and stuff like that, its more the fact that your average Scot doesn't understand what happens in the states. We will just assume that whomever the president is, represents the majority of Americans (completely ignorant of the electoral college, etc), and when it came to the man who musnt be named, a lot of Scots, myself included would and did ask Americans (both tourists and residents) about their thoughts of what was going on. I do think it was a misunderstanding when it came to JPS, we're very brash here, we don't build up in conversations, if there's a question in our mind we ask. Which is good, cos you always know what we're thinking, but due to accent and the rather brash vernacular we use, It can come across as invasive or combative or coming at you from an assumption, which i don't think the lassies were necessarily doing from the clip that was in the vlog. To me, it was a cultural misunderstanding on the part of JPS because he kinda wandered into Scotland not understanding the intrigue that american's spark here, Scotland is a very politically aware society, many of us being taught politics as young as 11 years old in high school. If you think that it won't be alluded to in conversation at the very least, I'm not sure what to say, its just how some of us are.

If you ever visit Scotland, if possible you should rent a campavan or mobile home. It means you can travel the country unrestricted and stay almost anywhere you desire. Perfect if you want to be more spontaneous and go on a proper adventure to see the country properly.

I wouldn’t recommend the graveyards as many tourists do it’s disgusting & disrespect & the locals are sick of them . The empty their piss & shite anywhere no care for the land . If it doesn’t stop then I will be supporting locals to get them banned completely our beloved country won’t stay beautiful if we do nothing.

For most part I would say 99% of us are freindly to tourist. In Edinburgh in August we are about less patient with tourists during the festival. I remember being disciplined at work during the festival as the 5 minute walk it usually takes me from the bus stop to my work took me over a hour as I couldn't get moving as there was no room to pass all the tourist.

If you have not seen the 1983 film Local Hero yet you should. It is about an oil executive visiting a small Scottish village trying to buy them out to build an oil refinery. Burt Lancaster is the owner of the oil company and Peter Riegert play the executive sent over to negotiate the deal. The film involves him falling in love with the community and the environment. All but one of the community want to get as much as the can from the deal. It is well worth a watch.

Regarding the kilt. Getting a made to measure kilt that that can set you back a few bob.
Though you could even get a cheap kilt around £20/£30 these are bog standard and do the job. but they are hit and miss sometimes. the cost really comes with the additional. (Shirt, waistcoat, jacket, brogues, socks, belt, sporran).
As for the name, you can get away with wearing any tartan. If any numpty tries to police the tartan just say your best pal back home is named Bob "insert family tartan name"

Midges are basically a type of tiny fly that live/travel in massive swarms in certain parts of the country - generally in western Scotland and more heavily in the north. They buzz around you and bite relentlessly and despite the suggestion of using repellents, i've never discovered anything that works efficiently. Of course, this shouldn't put anybody off visiting as the scenery is more than worth the bite marks and the itching that comes with it. Plus they tend to only appear when certain weather conditions are met.
